Nice vid!  Wgtn Airport take note.

Wairoa is the last place you should fill up before heading up to Gisborne.  Nice place (no, really), but I like Gisborne better and particularly Eastwoodhill Arboretum.

I actually think this is one of the worst ideas I have heard in my life, people saying it is a pisstake - I don't really get how it is. We are celebrating our film industry, not taking the piss out of it.

By all means do something on the hill infact I think some cool stuff could be done but not a Wellywood sign

Brilliant

Who is actually in favour of this? It seems clear that at least 3/4 of people are totally against it. I would reckon that's probably higher still. What retards actually think this Wellywood sign is a good idea?

It's been done before, not only tacky but old hat too.

Peter Jackson and Richard Taylor are for it, so is the airport company and it is their land and they already have resource consent so I fear we nay-sayers could be pushing sh*t up hill

Ideal compromise solution - those old office boards with the little holes in it that you push the letters in - lets have one of those on a HUGE scale - that way it can be changed as events happen.
Only issue is that with those old boards there is always one letter that gets lost and you have to misspell what you are saying

How they managed to get resource consent with ZERO public consultation is beyond me.

I don't give a flying f*ck if Peter Jackson and Weta think it's a great idea, it impacts the Wellington landscape in such a huge way that it's beggars belief that the people who would be forced to look at the thing were in no way consulted. Pays to know people who know people from the sounds of it.

If they put it up, I will go up there and f*cking burn it to the ground...

I preferred the piece of clolourful graffiti that said "Coolin' in Welly", which the council saw fit to paint over with a grey paint that didn't quite match the grey background, leaving a square of grey on a grey field.

The airport is paying for it,not the council.
But yeah, lame, tacky and embarrasing pretty much sums it up. Boo to the council for giving resource consent just because peter jackson likes it. Never mind 90%+ of wellingtonians who dont.Tegal2010-03-11 15:09:28

*sigh* why can't Peter Jackson like ice skating. I'd play hockey at the Jackson or Wellywood rink

Well if they are going to build it, lets go and protest when they make a start.

Prenderghastly is running for a fourth mayoral term. Considering "an ice rink for Wellington" has been a promise in every election campaign of hers, perhaps she'll sympathise?

(Why do I feel like I'm in a Tui ad right now?)

+1 for hockey rink
-1 for Wellywood sign

As I've mentioned before  the Mayor insisted that the  Welcome to Nuclear Free Wellington sign that had been outside the airport for years be removed  claiming it was inappropriate  but supports this tacky publicity stunt!

The sign would not get maintained and if people are against it then it would get damaged which would not be a good look. Plus its just plain tacky.

How can you build a successful industry based primarily on innovation and then "promote" it by implementing one of the worst examples of tacky and poorly executed ripoffs in the entire (and substantial) history of tacky and poorly executed ripoffs.

Are we sure it isn't April 1st yet? Somewhere?

Looks like the  real Hollywood is a bit upset as well with their chamber of commerce claiming its a violation of their trademark.

Also  even though our Mayor thinks its  a wonderfull idea there are apparantly  many  councillors who are  disgruntled at having not been told about the plan in advance ,surely a matter of courtsey  one would think !

WELLINGTON SAVED FROM MAJOR UN_NATURAL DISASTER
Wellington Airport has backed down from a proposal to erect a "Wellywood" sign and is asking the public for alternative ideas.

The airport announced on March 8 that it would put a 28m-wide by 3.5m-high sign on steep hillside land it owns next to the Miramar cutting in June.

Its's all over barr the shouting !
Good result cant wait to hear what the Mayor(Kerry no pals) has to say ,she was hung out to dry on this one with all her sychophants running for cover !!

Support WELLYWOOD "Wellywood will be rightfully recognised for what it is an extraordinary contributor to Wellingtons identity, its economy, and more recently to its tourism industry."
- Mayor Kerry Prendergast
LMAO Pity about the pumkins though!
