Whale meat in Japan
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Just as a FYI seeing that whale meat and Japan is in NZ media a lot.
I went , this morning, to Tsukiji the world's biggest fish market. No wonder there are no fish in the oceans....
The thing that got to me was there was whale meat on sale. ONE stall only. Not only that it was the only stall, selling whale,  but had signs, the only stall of any kind that did,  and they were in English!!!!!!! There was something going on that was just a bit odd.

Whaling is so awful, whales are such incredible creatures, and just the way they are killing is so sickening!

I wonder if it is a propaganda thing - hoping foreigners' intrigue will get the better of them and they'll try it and in a Dr Suess-type Green Eggs and Ham moment they'll turn to Sam I Am and proclaimed "I do like green eggs and whale". And having found they do indeed like whale meat, they'll tell all their country men that whaling is the best thing since butchering dolphins.

How is that different from killing any fish or mammal? Are you vegetarian?

I always thought it was more to do withthe fact they're going extinct etc?

Allegedly

Personally if they'll hunt them sustainably and try to do it in as humane a way as is possible (admittedly difficult considering their size) then I don't have a problem with it but I think it will be quite difficult for both of those requirements to be met.

Yeah, I am vegeatarian, haha. That was one of the many reasons why whaling is not good. I like whales. I like animals, animals in general are rather nice.

The difference for me (along with the extinction thing) is that I think (I admit I have limited knowledge) that it can take hours for the whale to die after being harpooned.

Yeah, thats what you'd expect aye. The harpoon just goes in anywhere (I think), and I guess they just bleed to death. Maybe they do something else to it when its on the ship to kill it quicker.

Whales are pointless, unlike Wales, which is f**king awesome.

the West has nothing to complain about.
unless the complete hypocrisy of the way we treat other types of animals is addressed our protests look pathetic. The chances of this seem particularly remote.

in most cases I find it embarrassing

here is an idea, don't kill and eat any animal

Thats what I'm getting at. If you're against whaling because its cruel to kill them because they're beautiful animals etc, then you're a bit of a hypocrite (unless vegetarian for the same reason i suppose, but thats an entirely different discussion)

If it's for a more valid reason, like extinction, then fair play to you. But then I don't see these people on any commercial fishing protests of any kind.

I guess protesting whaling is more cool? And because its at the japanese, rather than attacking our own culture.

Some of the bigger species are still supposed to be close to extinction.

Have a look at this link of a film called The Cove (not Sydney) it is the mercury coment in the first paragraph that is interesting.

Haha, well I ate that steak in 2009 when I wasn't vegetarian, and if its one thing that could possibly turn me around - possibly - its one of Siggy's steaks.

Always! I live in the country now, and our local butcher is fantastic, and sources all his meat from farms in the area. However, since we had our second kid, my wife has become a pescatarian, which means all our meat intake has reduced dramatically.

I'm never going back there. That spring surprise was painful
as for the lark's vomit, well...

back to whales

either killing for food is OK or it's not. If we are going to have a gradient scale of acceptable livestock, I am not going to moan at cats and dogs, snakes and whales being eaten by foreigners.

I have no problem with foreigners or anyone eating cats, dogs, snakes, non-endangered whales.

The issue I have is with cruelty - are they not abused when alive, and are they humanely killed when their time comes. Thats why I try to avoid non free range pork, and don't buy battery farmed eggs.

I didn't bother looking at the link but if it's about mercury content in whales being transferred to humans who eat them then don't salmon etc have mercury content as well?

And aren't species like the Minke Whales quite populous?
