pretty scary- but when it says "evidence shows this has happened at least 6 times in our Earth's history" i need more to be convinced-

a 500km event is extreme- what would a 5km event be like?

(Tunguska in 1908 was considerably smaller than this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EiXpp-i442s)

If that has happened 6 times, how long does it take for and how does the earth recover?

in our terms an eternity- in terms of the universe, the blink of any eye

put it this way, The All Whites wouldn't win the world cup in that amount of time

(Ok that doesn't make sense..)

Bill Bryson in his book "a short history of nearly everything*"  says Human's have been on Earth for 0.0001 per cent ofthe total history of the earth or if the universe was a man with outstretched arms from left to right, with the  Big Bang on the left hand then Homo Sapiens  have been around since the last 2mms of the quick on the right hand-

um yeah, not sure if i gave that metaphor justice

* great read btw

Saw a similar metaphor on Discovery last week.

It said if the history of the planet earth was represented at as a 97 storey building, the time humans had been around would be represented by the coat of paint on the roof.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!
