What should i do?

Seeing as i have no life except Spamming, Msn, Bebo and sending ScottishBhoy ridiculous amounts of texts and i need to decide what im going to do next year i figured what better people to ask than the randoms on the internet.

Ive just applied to Aoraki Polytech to take a Certificate in Radio OR a 10 hour a week Certificate in Journalism and all going well ill be accept for both. The reason i applied is because school isnt really that fun, im failing everything and im all ways in referals or the admin corridor.

If i did the Journalism one i would go back to school aswell.

Or should i take radio fulltime.

I am interested in them and would want to make a carrer out of them bot equally.

Has anyone else left school Quite Early and gone to polytech or university. Any Regrets.

Look long term, don't take the easy road in life, take the one that will be the most benefit to you!! But I will give you a good piece of advice about Tertiary Study...Make sure you enjoy what you are studying, if you are not enjoying it, either jack it in, or change to something you will enjoy. It is unbelievably hard to study something you don't enjoy (I know from experience) but studying something thats gets you going is a piece of cake. I did a degree for 2 and a half years of banging my head against a wall before I finally had the brainwave to change. Also remember that money in hand now may seem good but if you get the right qualifications your earning potential becomes that much greater in the long term.

P.S Sorry about the novel...

Go back to school, pass your classes, widen your options and go from there. Don't leave yourself with just 1 or 2 options or no back up.

I'm in my last year i have a fair idea of what i'm doing next year but still i wish i had more options available to me. Still, it's up to you and what you feel you are most passionate about.

Three for me, and two for them.

Well the options or pathways i have looked into are...

Bachelor in Communication Studies at AUT

Not sure what the courses are called but..
Physiotherapist
Sports Physcologist
PE Teacher

Also have been relatively pressured by some relatives in my family to go into the Armed Forces as they provide you with free education, the opportunity to travel abroad and something to fall back on if you want to pursure a career in the Armed Forces.

Very confusing for me and i'm still not certain on what i will do, but i know i will be either doing a course at Uni or in the Armed Forces this time next year.

Three for me, and two for them.

think I'd try the journalism / school option - gives you something to focus on outside school, but still lets you get those important bits of paper - and then you can go onto radio later on if the journalism works out (and hey, being a journalist is very portable if you want to travel)

And journalism could start with a blog, writing copy for the local free newspaper (neither pay) and build up a portfolio for when you go for a job

hope it works out for you

I left school early and went to polytech to basically do advanced PE full time, and loved it. Thanks to a technicality I passed NCEA Level 3 with nothing but school C, polytech unit standards, and the bare minimum english/math credits!

While I encourage people to stay in school as much as possible, I know first hand it's not always that easy, and sometimes some real world experience helps a lot. I matured a lot from working and polytech, and probably wouldn't be as successful as I am now in uni were it not for that.

My advice - Do whatever you feel you can profit from the best, and I don't mean financially - get a good foundation education, whether it be high school to get into uni, or industry qualifications that lead into further education or essential skills. The polytech courses I did were specifically designed to get me into AUT for a Sport and Rec degree, which wasn't my cup of tea but the option was there.

Personally, I'd go for journalism, as the experience from that can lead into perhaps a degree in communications should you feel up to uni later in life, whereas radio is very industry specific and far less marketable. If you're going to juggle it as well as high school, make sure you can prioritize and do a good effort of both.

Think carefully before enrolling in a course that can set you back thousands of dollars. I work at a University and I see a lot of students who don't really know why they are doing the course and getting into a lot of debt into the bargain.

If you do enroll - make sure you are getting value for money. If you feel you are being shortchanged then gather likeminded students together and take you concerns to the Student Union. You are paying a lot of money for education so you should expect (and give) the best.

Finally - try and get some work experience in journalism or radio BEFORE you make the decision. Know what you are getting into. See if you can do odd jobs or just hang out for a day at a newspaper and radio station.

Wumbo you left out one important option - leave school and get a job. A lot of people these days overlook the life education experience that working brings. They also tend to think that the only way to get a decent job is to have a degree or diploma or the like. Bollocks. If you are not sure what you want to do why take a course that will set you back thousands with no guaranteed outcome? Relax, decisions you make now probably will make a difference to your ultimate destination just don't forget to enjoy the trip. I would say there are very few people in the world working in their ideal job, so take some time to see what is available, keep your head up and just take one step at a time. I've always found the best thing is to be ready when that great opportunity arises i.e. no debt, good basic education, some money in the bank, reliable transport, a positive attitude and the support of good people. Pretty simplistic I know, but it's easy to overcomplicate things, just ask the AB's. You are an intelligent fella so don't sweat the small stuff - and stop causing every one else so much grief ffs. Just get on and enjoy life. If you're not enjoying it then you need to make some changes so that you can. Now how simple is that? Good luck (you'll need it 'cos believe it or not this plays the biggest part in everyones life!).

I'm not sure how old you are, but I do know that school doesnt work for everyone, it can be just like a big holding paddock and the options are limited. It aint so easy on the outside either, but if you have made up your mind, and it is something you are interested in, then go for it. Like, really go for it, no mucking around, dont get caught up in the wrong crowd. Enjoy yourself, these are some of your best days, but give it a decent shot, whatver you do
