I can hold a small convo in Spanish and also know bits of French, Japanese and Arabic.

Currently improving my Spanish and Arabic.

Wish I could speak other languages but can't.  Planned on learning (Irish) Gaelic at University but they don't offer it so that threw me.  One day I'd like to learn German but can't see myself getting round to it anytime in future.

Hey i'm being serious for a change. I don't speak any of them too well but know all the common words and phrases etc.

If others on here were bi or even multi lingual we could have a language thread and help each other improve.

Redneck doesn't count.

I speak a little bit of french, enough to hold a small conversation and I can also speak a fair bit of Japanese.

Also a slice of Italian. My grandmother tried to teach me.

About 3 sentences in French, German, 1 in Mandarin. Does morse count? I used to do 25wpm in morse some years back.

Good. The more languages the better.

I can't speak Italian unfortunately. Not much motivation for me as it's only spoken in Italy as opposed to the other languages i have a grasp of (excluding Jap which i took for 2 years at school).

Morse? Very impressive LG. You would probably find it easier to learn languages with other characters such as Russian or Arabic than many others who don't have it as a 1st language.

Did you learn the characters while studying Japanese Buffy?

I did but it has been over 4 years since i took it and although i recognize most of them i have forgotten what a lot of them are sadly. I still remember some important/common phrases in Jap though.

I bought a 8 CD box set with books to learn spanish, but so far it has only ever been used as a paperweight and a door-stop.  One day I will open it, though.

Know a few basic words and phrases in French, but would love to learn another language properly.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked

Can, right now, hold a modest conversation in French. I've spent time studying Arabic and Japanese. However, in both of those cases I have to be there and surrounded by the langugage before I can start speaking it again. That is if say an Arabic speaker approached me in the street right now I would struggle big time.
In London I worked with a group of guys from Iraq. They spoke in Arabic most of the day and I learned more than I imagined I would by osmosis. That said Iraqi Arabic is not the same as Egyptian Arabic....  short version: embarassing moment with a policeman in Egypt.
Good moment: I was speaking to a money changer in Chtaura, Lebanon, in French. He said "are you English?". I said "yes". He said "MY GOD! An Englishman who can speak a language other than his own!".
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Yep they seem to really enjoy it as long as you make the effort. I remember earlier this year in Rotovegas on a uni trip we saw a Ecuadorian Flute Band playing in the town square and they were selling various items so i walked up and asked 'cuanto cuesta?' which is 'how much does it cost?' in Spanish and the lady was very impressed. She then proceeded to talk in Spanish and saw i had trouble understanding so i stepped in with 'hablo un poco espanol' to avoid further embarrassment.

I think. Minus the accents and all that.

Afrikaans is very similar to Dutch so is probably a good one to learn. Not sure how similar Samoan is to other Polynesian languages.

They should be speaking English anyway.  Well, that's what I keep on getting told.

You probably know what "Talofa" means.  "Tofa" is goodbye, or the shortened form is "Fa".  Aiga (pronounced A Enga) is the same as whanua/family.  That's a start.
