Who remembers the visits of Wolves, QPR, Dinamo...
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I'd love to see any of those teams now except maybe the last one that I've never heard of.

You forgot the Galaxy.

I went to the QPR v Wellington Selection game at the Basin Reserve in 1982 and Watford also came here to play NZ for some World Cup warm up games. That must have been around 1982 as well. I went to the Athletic Park game and sat in the Millard Stand. Great view from up there.

QPR 2 Wellington Select 0, I was there and at Spurs at the basin and Sheffield United and England "B". Then at Athletic park they had the full England International. Paul Parker was playing.

I'm sure Luton and Swindon also came down under and played in Auckland. I could be wrong though.

Back then they were end of season wind downs for players not involved in the Home Internationals when they were still running. These days, they're pre-season warm ups to get the players fitness up to scratch.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

That's right. Luton did play at the Basin! That was a laugh. Terrible night as I remember,. My friend got fed up with the photographer's flash and went and told him off.

Jardines is/was a Hong Kong club named after the Scottish businessman who set up shop in the colonial days.

Particularly Bournemouth. They absolutely hammered everyone except Wellington. Mind you, that game was played in terrible weather. They were just so professional.

I don't remember the full story but Radnicki were brought out, I believe  on the whim of some guy in Wellington who supported them. Excellent!!  I think, THINK, they played a match against Adriatic.

Reading some on the Nix/Everton thread it's clear that if their thinking had applied in the past very few of these teams would ever have come here.

That's awesome.

I'll go on the blower now, and maybe Dinamo will come over for pre-season...

I would like to say I played a part in QPR coming out here in '83 after my tme there in 1980. Perhaps the then club secretary (The Tony Pignata equivalent) Ron Phillips could answer that however he left the club about 1987 to do other things.

To be honest, I really miss the foreign clubs visiting. Didn't Gothenberg come out as well??

It got better.. didn't it?

[QUOTE=Scottishbhoy]When did Aberdeen come here?

1975(ish), I'll ask my friend he's the guru.

When I went to Minsk, in 1987, I was being shipped from Great Patriotic War memorial to Great Patriotic War memorial (hugely sobering) and the Intourist guide said "do you want to see anything else in our beautiful city?". I said that I would like to see Dinamo Minsk's ground.  I explained that they had played in Wellington. Well now, football really is a universal language. ...and off we went to the ground. The guide had gone from glum jobsworth to cheery comrade-in-football in a nano-second.

Derek Dougan.

Remember that great football straight from the kickoff. Three touches, as I remember it, and then the crossbar was rattled.
