Onehunga Sports beat Birko 3-0. (HT 1-0) ugly stop start game from what I could see (got there towards end of first half), lots of niggly challenges and uncharacteristically Sports seemed happy to hoof once they were ahead. couldn't see who scored first goal just before half time (well taken effort from Milne or Lovemore around 18 yard after a scrambled post corner clearance), a Milne penalty and a classy solo effort from Jordan Vale in second half. top effort from Birko in terms of getting a crowd there and generating some atmosphere.

Central 2 - 0 Wairarapa.

Central scored on the 83rd minute, and their second was basically the end of the game after Wairarapa had thrown players forwards. A deserved victory. Wairarapa were woeful going forwards. Couldn't even play hoofball with any accuracy. Honestly I thought it was appalling how often they just kicked the ball straight back to them. However, besides a few scares in the first ten minutes, they did defend quite well and really limited Central's chances. That lanky dude at the back looks like trouble but then he seems to read absolutely everything.

Daniel Allan? He was Tasman United's outstanding player last summer, but also gave a few goals away through mistakes. I think he's got a very bright future ahead of him.

The guy Dan Allan was Rapa's best player. Didn't put a foot wrong and saved their arse numerous times. Rapa midfield (Chettleburg and Lindsay) couldn't keep the ball so Rapa had to start looking for long options. Central midfield was just many levels above Rapa. Rapa did well to stay in it for as long as they did and could have pinched the lead once or twice. Central deserved winners today.

Men against boys? Thought Wests were the runaway CL champs?

A bit harsh on Wests. Beaten by a more mature, street-wise team. Bay Olympic coach sums it up well here, calling them "naive".

At 1-1, Wests looked more likely. Once Bay Olympic went up 2-1, they were able to shut Wests down, frustrate them into uncharacteristic errors (forced & unforced), making silly fouls and cards, & into impatiently trying too hard to force an equaliser.

Well-earned win.

So what does this say about relative merits of Central League v Northern League? Wests runaway CL champs v Bay Olympic currently placed 7th and with a minus goal diff never looking remotely like NRL champs. And what does it also say about Declan? Seems to me he still isn't too bothered about coaching players to be winners, just about coaching nice footballers.

We have a sample size of 1 here... Can't read too much into merits of Auckland vs Wellington from this game alone.

Auckland clearly stronger, but I'm not convinced that Bay Olympic team would be top 4 in Central League. They had a game plan to counter Wests, got a lucky goal to open the scoring and then bundled a goal in when the opposition keeper went walkabouts.

They deserved their lead but they weren't great.

Bay Olympic have a core of guys w/ experience, who 'know how to win' which'll help them in the cup, but they're probably a weaker team, on their best day, than Onehunga, Birkenhead, Central United, Waitakere City, East Coast Bay and Glenfield Rovers (which are the six teams above them in the NRFL Premier Division). Talking to a few people from the upper half of the island who have been looking at Central League teams for national league options, the consensus seems to be that the Central League is a long way off.

Take I heard on this game from a Wellington watcher was that Wests seemed overawed by the occasion.

Wests dominated the first 30 minutes with Bay Olympic just hanging on and playing 11 men behind the ball in their own half. Bay Olympic had not made an  attack into Wests third then  the right fullback for Wests under no pressure played the ball across the back straight to Olympic's striker who fluffed the shot at goal.

However, this was a turning point as the very young Wests team went from dominating to a lack of composure and it was no surpise when Olympic took the lead albeit from a brilliant individual goal.

This is one of the few times Wests had fallen behind in a game all season and from that point on they lost their supreme  confidence. Another baffling strategy from Wests was playing so much long ball when they had talented mid field and attacking players.  Olympic had no problems mopping up the long balls.

West still dominated possesion for the remainder of the game  but they did not have their usual confidence. Olympic's game plan of defending and looking for a quick break  worked well on the day and they deserved their win.

It says that it is a cup competition and that's about it.

This from the team that creeped past a NRFL League 1 side in the previous round due to poor finishing from Spring's kids.

pretty good summary of the game. Bay Olympic weren't outstanding but were decent, having the likes of Chad Coombes, Mario Bilen, and Julyann Collett helped a lot

Having also seen Central v Rapa I would tip Central to win if these two teams were drawn together but then this is cup football

I am guessing he'd claim that he was impeded/fouled by the Bay player. But of course there's no rule that says a player has to actively get out of the keeper's way.

Entirely different club.

The Onehunga of 1954, although based at the time at Waikaraka Park (which is now Onehunga Sports' home ground), is now Onehunga-Mangere United.

Onehunga Sports were originally known as Cornwall, and were formed in 1957 ... I can think of worse ways to celebrate a club's diamond jubilee than to win the league and cup double! :-)

Surprised it was only a yellow, I probably would have shown a red. Not surprised if Declan gets fined for it, not how you do things, can't call someone out like that on social media. Have a problem with it, raise a complaint directly with Capital Football instead.

In fact, this is from the regulations which Declan will know. http://www.sporty.co.nz/asset/downloadasset?id=566...

8.6 Reported written abusive or critical comments against a Match Official contained in any official Club Match Programme or publication, in the media, on any form of Social Media or on a Club’s web page will incur an automatic fine of $250.00 on the offending Club. Repeated occurrences during the current season involving the same Club will result in the fine being doubled. The report of any alleged breach of this Regulation must be sent in the first instance to The Manager for action.

As far as I saw he called it an "act of violence".... No direct criticism of officials or insults or abuse?

The fine is unimportant, that challenge was pure malice with zero intention of even looking at the ball.... like we've seen from Siggy in the past (remember)

My question is would anyone else have got away with that?

Is that you Declan?

On the question, I'd say yes, the ref on the day seemed to not really want to give cards out. There was an incident in the second half where North Wellington keeper Sacha Nathu took out a Wests player outside the box, ball had gone past and it was blatant foul to stop him getting passed, should have been a red as it was outside the box. But the ref wasn't giving out reds so only booked Nathu
