There is precedent for NZF moving the final, they played it in Palmerston North when Napier and Wairarapa made the final in 2011

and they moved it to Christchurch in 2013 when Cashmere Tech made the final against Waitakere and Coastal Spirit were in the womens cup final against Glenfield

Coastal Spirit v Glenfield was also 2011 Final (in PN) as well as 2013.

Heard a few people around me commenting that Wests were playing long-ball. (lol)

The difference being that they'd keep possession and wait until Onehunga set a high defensive line, then they wouldn't hesitate to play over top.

Not stupid at all when:

a) your players are fast

b) the opposition is playing a high line and

c) the people playing the long balls aren't being pressured

Over the last year Wests have found that teams have packed the middle and sat deep against them, so they have focused on exploiting the counter and the spaces in behind when teams do press a bit higher. People misinterpret why Declan likes his teams to keep the ball. It's not about passing the ball into the back of the net every time, it's about controlling the game and then finding the way to break the opponent down, whether it's playing through, around, or over. This is Declan's best team so far, in part because they're very adaptable without having to alter their basic shape or playing style. Whoever they get next, they will find a way to score goals.

you don't need to bring up the long ball then defend it. You mixed it up and won. Job done.

Normally I do a post with the summary of previous results between the teams and best performance etc

It's easy this time as none of these teams have met before

for best performances

Western Suburbs have won the cup 3 times - 1935 (as Hospital), 1971 & 2006

Cashmere Technical - Won 2013, 2014

Birkenhead United - won 2016

Nelson Suburbs - Semi Finals 2008 (pretty sure Jeremy Brockie was in that team)

My Picks its semi final time so really pure guesses

What I'd like Wests to Beat Cashmere and Nelson to beat Birkenhead

What I think will be Wests beat Cashmere and Birkenhead beats Nelson

The history of the final being moved around the country goes back to the mid 1970s.

I was at the 1978 final in Nelson as a schoolboy (Nelson United vs. Manurewa)

The 1974 final was played at QE II Stadium, Christchurch (Chch Utd vs. Wellington Diamond Utd)

The 1994 final was played in Napier despite no Hawkes Bay team being in the final (Waitakere vs. Wellington Olympic)

From the Cup's inception in the 1920's to 1994 most finals were played in Wellington (usually at the Basin Reserve, sometimes Newtown Park) just as the FA Cup Final has always been held in London.

Before 1970 the final was played between the winners of the South Island and North Island sections.

1986-88 the final was played home and away over two legs at the two finalists' grounds.

Click on the year in this table for details on every final since 1923:

Very rare to have such comprehensive stats available on a NZ football tournament.

Nice !!!

Was at the game.

Very close hard-fought battle with Cashmere Tech playing most of the game with ten men after an early sending off for taking a player down in the box which resulted in a penalty.

Pick of the goals was Tech's second to tie it up just before half-time - beautiful effort squeezed in from a very tight angle near the goal line.

I thought so. Last man, on goal, wasn't really a legitimate challenge, gone.

DOGSO is relevant if it's not a genuine attempt to win the ball.

This!

The offending player is cautioned unless:

– The offense is holding, pulling or pushing or

– The offending player does not attempt to play the ball or there is no possibility for the player making the challenge to play the ball or

– The offense is one which is punishable by a red card wherever it occurs on the field of play (e.g. serious foul play, violent conduct etc.)

Actually I think the CBs may have been up in the Wests box and it was the player sent, Haworth who had the hilarious air swing. AllWhites82 could confirm but I think he was at right back.

Hmmm. She does like football, but she's got a 30 second attention span so the game may not entertain her for long.

that would be awesome as there was about 2000 there last year, so 10 times would be 20k!

There were 4200 last time Birko were in it and the majority were Birko fans, but they were against Waitakere who had a fair few there as well. Wests do get a good following in Wellington not sure how many they will take up

[Just reading through , been busy so a little late. What a great game and well done Wests good luck for the final. Nice to see a Wellington home grown team do so well. Very pleased with the crowd and local support for football at this level. Also really pleased with the CTFC boys for their efforts. Taking it to the wire after playing with 10 men for 90 minutes was some effort. Really felt for Nick, it was a mistake that he then compounded with a reckless challenge. Should have left it to Knighty, One on one he is pretty good.He will be gutted but every one who has played at this sort of level has made similar errors. I feel sure he will learn from it as will other players. Very pleased with the teams reaction after the game. A real solid unit who fight together and take their lumps and results together.

A bit surprised that anyone found the error "Hilarious" still at least we got their $5 so they can think what they like I suppose.

Air swings are always funny. We laughing with the player, because we've all been there!
