The Chatham Cup has got me thinking, why is there no Wellington based cup competition? I don't know about anywhere else, but in Christchurch we have what is called the English cup, and it is just for the first teams of all clubs in the region to enter. It is an automatic open draw, and a great way to play some teams you may never normally play in the region, without any of the traveling issues. I know some of the best games I have had were in English cup games for Varsity, rolling over higher teams, and making it to the semi's (last year a second tier team even made it to the final's).
Has something like this ever been run in Welly, or is it just more games on already to little fields?

We used to have the Ivan England (now a u19 comp) for first teams at the end of the season. Waste of time. We dont need it neither do our grounds.

that is true, but LN's suggestion shouldnt be dismissed so swiftly. If you could fit it in, if you could get the CL teams to take it seriously, then it would be great. Challenge would be building enough stature around the competition to make it meaningful and for clubs to be motivated to win it. It would get dopey if Miramar, Wests, Petone and Olympic were putting out their 2nd teams bc they were concentrating on the league or the Chatham Cup. You might be able to overcome that and create a really good annual Wellington tournament, but it wouldnt be easy thats for sure.
Ivan England was a bit half arsed, agreed, but i remember the weather in september being brilliant and still getting a kick out of beating a v good lower hutt side in the semi at bell.

Considering Wests are so protective of their players that they won't let them play a one off game against the Phoenix tomorrow night I'd be surprised if Cotton Wool Calcott would want them running the gauntlet of a second-tier cup competition. Poor dears might hurt themselves.
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
