That's right, you read right, your humble narrator is going to see whether she can hack a slightly more serious grade of football this year. Am still deciding which one of two teams to play for. Trained with one of them yesterday and today I ache all over. I was about the fittest on my Div 2 side last year, but I'm certainly one of the "fat old ladies" if I stay with this side. Especially since this is the level at which you start playing alongside and against 15-year-old wondergirls. We shall all see.

Definitely a bit of a jump in quality from Div 2 to Div 1, as it should be I suppose!  Good luck for the season.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Definitely a jump in fitness. GAAAH! Two training sessions and my arms still hurt. The coach wants us to do man push-ups instead of the girly variety, and run around half the field in 35 seconds. (I managed 40 before collapsing into a puddle.)

I was about the fittest person on my old team, which really should have indicated it was time to find a new team. Once the coach tried to motivate everyone else by saying "even the keeper is faster than you", which kind of annoy me at the time.

So the choice is between the club I'm training with at the moment; or the team comprising most of the ladies I play Gaelic with, but who're going to be based on the other side of town. Decisions, decisions, esp. for the only Aucklander who doesn't own a car.

First training run with UniMount/Bohemian Celtic ladies Div 1. Pretty much just an extended training game, with both teams shooting for the same goal. The most keeper training I've got in ages, and I loved it. Pleased to note that my ground kicks have improved out of sight since last year. We seem to have picked up a hot-shot 15 year old striker from Rotorua who stung my hands more than once.

First friendly this Sunday v OneSports at Bill McKinley. Woot. Saved a penalty in a practice game last weekend so I'm feeling confident.

Pre-season friendly: Bohs 0 - Onehunga Sports 3

The full name of our women's team is "University Mt Wellington Bohemian Celtic". It's certainly the most imposing name in the league. The ladies used to play out of 3 Kings, but we've moved to join our men on the artificial turf at Bill McKinlay. Looking forward to having a season with no home games called off. This "Tiger Turf" is pretty good stuff - not too painful to dive on, though I might put vaseline on my knees next game.

Anyway, first game on our new home pitch today. We were told it was against "Onehunga Sports". At the ground we found out that these were the girls who were at Fencibles last year, and won our league in a canter with several 10 or 15 goal wins. So we kind of got that sinking feeling. Meanwhile, we haven't quite got enough for two teams yet, so we've got players from Div 1 to Div 4 quality making up the team.

Long story short: OneSports ran total rings around us but were very wasteful in front of goal. By which I mean they kept trying to pass it into the net, and generally let me run at them, unnerve them and cause them to lose it. The middle third of the game was the hardest. I felt like I was goalkeeping in the highlights. Once their striker scythed straight through our defence at half way and came right for me. I let off a groan of frustration, which apparently put her off enough that she shot right at me. The ref cautioned me because he thought I did it on purpose.

We were only 1-0 down with about 20 mins to go, and I must say at least one of their last goals was due to a lapse of concentration on my part. (The other was a fantastic volley which I could only applaud.) But I was proud of my performance. One of the oppo strikers said I was player of the match. But my defence was making me look good, especially when they covered for my runs out of the box.

Bohemian Celtic? oxymoron?

Good luck for the season anyway.

Blimmin 'eck! Junior footy will be starting up soon. I'd better start going out for a few runs to keep up with the 12 yos.

Not sure I get that one. Is the word "Bohemian" somehow associated with Rangers?

Anyway, proud to say I represented Auckland in an end of season Gaelic football friendly against Christchurch and I made some good saves in a convincing victory.

Can it be truly associated with Celtic?

Can you be cautioned for groaning?  I think I need to do a refresher course before the season starts in a couple of weekends (or at least re-read the LOTG).

Can be if the referee thinks it's been done deliberately to put a player off or gain an advantage. Good old 'Unsporting Behaviour', one size fits all

Beachlands Maraetai 2 - 2 UniMount Bohemian Celtic

I'm still stuffed after that, but short version. Our newish team took a while to gel and the Beachlands girls ran right through us for the first bit. I had to make running save after running save as they easily cut through our confused backline. Eventually, exhausted, I stopped running and they scored one right past me. Luckilly we equalised at half-time, with a Leo Bertos-like cross that went to the wrong player which turned out to be the right player.

Halftime 1-1, and coach told me to get more "aggro" with the opposition. This was wild advice showing he didn't know me very well. A couple of good one-on-ones ended me with me confidently clearing, but next time the winger got round me, and I had a brain explosion and grabbed her shoulder. The shot went in, the ref gave me a yellow, and made it clear that if it hadn't gone in it would have been a red. So embarrassed.

However, around that time our midfield woke up, started making clear calls and putting the ball on the deck. We have a big strong striker who is a fantastic back-to-goal player, and we started getting the ball to her and she easily distributed to our wide players, from which our second equaliser come. She actually came within a hand's width of scoring the winner in the last minute. Never mind; a fair result, especially after 45 minutes travel each way.

Next match: at home to Metro, the team I was originally training with this year, so there might be a bit of GRRR RIVALS there too.

Hopefully from a goalie's perspective, not from a "special treats" perspective...

How does the team compare with your one last season?  Is there quite a step up in skill/fitness levels?

Difficult to tell yet. At training the Div 1 and Div 4 teams train together and some of the most skill comes surprisingly from the latter. Also, we didn't have many preseason games so we haven't really "gelled" with the new players, as was painfully obvious in the back four last week. But the two goals scored against Beachlands were top notch, so it's definitely a step up, although not sure how much of one.

UniMount Bohemian Celtic 1 - 0 Metro FC

Well, that was nerve-wracking. Our young centre-backs and centre-mids have not learned to talk to one another yet. I just about screamed with frustration every time I saw two or even three of our players take the ball off one another. It kept going to Metro's fast, strong strikers... who then thought it best to play passing games in front of goal rather than shoot at me, to my immense relief. I only had to make one actual save all game, but I was kept busy with running out to clear.

We got a goal half-way through the first half against the run of play. Through-balls behind their backline, and their backline generally had no idea what to do about it. And I got the feeling that their keeper wasn't a specialist and didn't really like using her hands. If only our strikers had settled a little more, we could have scored more.

The ref didn't have a great game. About halfway through the second half he gave a penalty against us for a foul which no-one (and that included the Metro girls) thought happened in the box. Perhaps the knowledge that they didn't really deserve it led to their striker pushing it wide past the far post. Or perhaps I vibed her out with my voodoo stare. (Coach says most players even at this level fear goalkeepers, which is to my advantage as I am quite intimidating.)

I got my foot stepped on 10 minutes from time and it's still hurting like billy-o. So is my voice from yelling at the backline to start putting a name on it. Never mind. I'll take the win over the team that carried all before it last year. But I do wish those Irish girls wouldn't turn up hung-over. Or still drunk. Or doing the walk of shame.

Anyway, the censored report:

Papakura 2 - UniMount BohCeltic 0

We didn't recover from a craptacular first half where a bunch of 18 year old wondergirls ran straight through our backlines and managed to chip me twice. Second half was much better. I did the kind of "desperately throw oneself in the general direction of the ball and surprisingly make contact" saves that look really classy to outsiders and thus somehow got Player of the Day. But sometimes I think that I'm like Frank van Hattum and I wouldn't have to make dynamite stops if I were in the right position more often. On the other hand, the further south you go, certainly the better the feed they put on.

Papatoetoe AFC 1 - 3 UniMountBohCeltic

Last week's fixture was postponed as Manukau City were practicing their boxing skills playing in the Women's Cup, so two away fixtures in a row. My mother grew up in P/toe and they always put on a good feed down there, if the Murdoch Park facilities are sometimes a little bucolic. It was only after the game we found out how to switch the lights on in the dressing-room toilets, for example.

The ground was hard and sandy and I skinned my knees badly making a diving save. I should say "the" diving save, because that was the only one I had to make all match. The goal we conceded came from a defensive mixup and a screaming strike from the edge of the box. Apart from that, traffic was essentially one way. Our glorious fast striker scored a hat-trick of tap-ins past an outpaced defence and keeper.

I know the feeling now.

Released some candid information about a now former coach on the Northern League forum. He wasn't too pleased as noted in his reply.

Tbh forums are there for a reason, so it would be a shame to think you're being censored or controlled on here by your coach.

I don't think it was the coach who was pissed, but perhaps some of my fellow players who'd got onto him about it. He didn't seem upset personally, more interested in keeping team cohesion.

EDIT: ... oh, so you're S.H. I'm not that surprised. :) But seriously - your version of events sounds pretty insane and you were at least owed an explanation.

UniMount BohCeltic 1 - 4 Western Springs

Errrrgh. That was deeply unpleasant. We found ourselves incapable of actually challenging for the ball, and on the rare occasion we got it, we passed it straight to the opposition. I think having two trainings rained off in a row was starting to show for the girls, and hopefully we can start training on the artificial in future. WS apparently had at least one ex-international playing for them, but that's no excuse.

Ellerslie 1 - 2 UniMount BohCeltic

That's more like it. A bottom-of-the-table clash, sure, but nice to be reminded that we can still win.

The big difference this week is that we seem to have remembered how to pass and tackle. Ellerslie had a bit of an edge on us fitness wise, which really showed in the last 15 minutes, but leading up to that we actually managed to make the ball do the running for much of the game. And I was quite chuffed when I ran out of my box to make a clearance, it went straight to our striker, who passed it to the other striker who scored. My first assist. :D

Question. Is it legal for two players to simultaneously go shoulder-to-shoulder with the ball carrier? It's not in Gaelic football so I thought I'd check. I think I should mention that Ellerslie also had a bit of an edge on us aggression-wise.

Anecdote I forgot to mention: my right boot started flapping early in the 2nd half. I thought it would last the match, but considering the hammering we got in the last 15 minutes, requiring much running and kicking from me, I was wrong. The sole came off altogether with 5 to go. We got a stoppage from the ref to tape it back on, which didn't make the Ellerslie girls very happy at all.

UniMount BohCeltic 1 - 3 Three Kings

... and my second straight-red in as many seasons. :(

Five minutes to go. We're down 1-2 in a match which we've pretty much dominated, due to a couple of thundering errors. Due to these thundering errors, the defence and I have been shirty with one another. I've also had a bad week in other regards so I am hanging onto my sanity by a hair. The ball goes way up high in the hair right in the 6-yard box. I jump up, catch it cleanly, and the 3Kings striker bundles me across the goal line. So... yeah. I shove her back and she goes down. Everyone starts yelling all at once and the ref shows me red. And if I had kept my head and not gone all Zidane, it would have probably been her who got the yellow.

After the match, I had some fascinating suggestions for psychiatric drugs I might like to try. :)

Boh Celtic 1 - 1 Papakura

Back from suspension, and my team had a loss to a mid-table team and a win over a cellar-dweller team in my absence, roping outfield players into goal. With such moderately good results I thought I might have to fight hard to regain my place for this match against one of the top teams in the division, but apparently not.

But what a difference a few weeks makes. The communication was back between the goal-mouth and the defence. Defenders were backing each other up, clearing the ball and putting through cunning passes to the midfield. Our opponents seemed to be 15 year old wondergirls every one, and they got more and more frustrated the more they couldn't beat us old biddies. Because the defence was so good, I didn't have much to do but field the occasional long ball and clear. In fact, both sides were playing a simple "through ball to a striker" strategy, and it just so happens that we caught Papakura offguard first, drawing ahead after about 30 minutes.

'Kura equalised within about 15 seconds of the kickoff of second half, though, in identical fashion. I got a hand to it but no avail. Certainly their young legs were a decisive factor and they started to dominate a bit in the second half, which meant I got a bit of work - plucking the ball out of the air from corners, free kicks or long speculative shots near the halfway line, mostly. It seems that 'Kura were comfortable with long-range shots, or trying to pass the ball into goal - something in the middle and I would have had more trouble. Frustrations on both sides showed and the game got more physical as it went on - people on both sides were hitting the artificial turf pretty hard, and the ref heard protests from both camps. (Well, I mean "lipread" because he was apparently deaf, but you get the gist.)

So a draw which definitely feels like a win and an excellent return to the field. A bye next week and then off to Manukau City, I think.

Manukau City 1 - 2 UniMount Bohemian Celtic

Lovely. Just as nice as the last game, and in fact the same story. While Papakura were composed of 15-year-old wondergirls, MCAFC were composed of ex-Premiership players and apparently the occasional ex-Football Fern. However, they had one tactic and one tactic alone - through balls for their fast strikers to run onto. Once our centre backs caught wise to this, all I had to do was beat the striker in a footrace and I'm happy to say I did that everyone time. I'm told I have a "determined look" in my eye that unnerves opponents. I hope so.

Our first goal was a speculative shot which dribbled between their keeper's legs; their goal pinballed off the legs of at least three players in a post-corner scramble, eventually hit a striker's shinguard, then the post, then trickled over the line. But finally we got the win when our own wonder strike dribbled the ball straight through about three defenders and almost right in the keeper's important little places. They kept coming, but we held out. Still 6th on the table and getting better all the time. It seems to really make a difference when we have a full squad - perhaps outfielders knock themselves out when they know they will be subbed.

I must say though, the changing rooms at MCAFC are not what I would expect from a team with a NRFL men's team.

I'll be there aswell.  Be good to get a chance to see Massey play again now that i'm stuck up here.  Massey have scored 62 goals in 11 Central League games, while Claudelands have scored 114 in 11 Northern League games, and both are top of their respective tables,so it should be a pretty good game.

Rather than dwell upon a match in which I pretty much did nothing but stand in the cold and wet and shiver (apart from one punch-away from a cross that I'm quite proud of), I will restrict myself to whining about how we lost the points from the hard-fought win over Manukau due to ineligible players. By "ineligible players" we mean "two of our best players came from Manukau last season, and after the match some of their former teammates looked it up and found that the club had mucked up their transfer slightly due to sheer error, so filed a protest". GRRR!

Hoo-boy, the return fixture there will have some good old-fashioned niggle.

Western Springs 1 - 0 Bohemian Celtic

That was depressing. We held a much better team out until the 85th minute. It was just like the Football Ferns vs Brazil, although I had to do much less of the spectacular saves and much more of running out to clean up long balls. Their coach congratulated us on being massively improved after the game, which was cold comfort.

So we're a solid 7th on the table (should be 6th, bloody Manukau), with 3 games to go in the season. We shouldn't get relegated from here, touch wood. What will be weird is that my old team, MAP, is cleaning up Div 2 at the moment, which means I may well be playing against them next year...
