i heard J Cross refereed at the 2007 OFC beach soccer tournament in Akl.  I have spoken to him about the game/tournament and he said it was a great "fun" event with LOTS of goals and some good skills by players.

It is a truly different form of the game but if you like scoring goals and soft landings after trying outrageous moves beach soccer is well worth a try!!!!

Although i hope you have a good supply of balls as they may end up in the south island pretty quick.....

All the football was played at Oriental Bay during an entertaining late afternoon warmup for the coming weekend of Beach football. The crowd was entertained by a mix of international and local  players and some quite skilled ones as well! Luckily the footy spotters were at Petone or some of these guys may have been snapped up.
It's quite a different game to play and should be good fun on the weekend if you can handle the sand kicked in your face without being insulted!

Well Done Tony
A great day of Beach Soccer

Some of it skillful, and some of it quite rugged, but all played in fantastic spirits

The beach looked great, multifarious flags of nations flying high, spanish music  and reggae blaring

KCU look the business as do Myanmar, all light on their feet but strong, and The United Arabs are also highly fancied.
Culture Kicks, a rag tag affair consisting of  myself, Paris Razos, some Olympic, Salmon and a few tourists managed to finish bottom of the table but beat the UN on Penalties, with the goal of the tournament by John, the scots ranger from Miramar- a clinical volley from 10 metres.

join us tomorrow at 10.30 am for the finals- all welcome, spots still up for grabs!

Congratulations to Kapiti Coast United

Winners of the inaugural Wgtn Beach Soccer Tournament!

They beat Myanmar in the Semi, United Arabs beat Culture Kicks in the other Semi.
The final was a very tight and physical affair watched by about 50 spectators- 0-0 at Half time, and then again at full time, it was characterised by some brave and acrobatic goalkeeping by both sides.

With 10 seconds to go until penalties, the UA conceded a free kick on the edge of the area and a quick thinking KCU Nipper whipped a low hard shot into the UA Net for the Goalden Goal.

3rd place was taken by Culture Kicks beating Myanmar 3-2, while Myanmar took the FIFA Fair Play award.

Watch TV3 news tonight, or maybe Nightline for Highlights from yesterday- a full score sheet will be posted by Sportzone soon

Thanks to Sportzone and Wellington City Council for putting this on, thanks to Maranui SLSC and Cafe for helping us out and thanks for all the teams for taking part- stay tuned for the next installment!

Really the big thank you should go to Dragan Serdar for putting his heart and soul, as well as substantial time, into thinking up the Beach Soccer event and then followingit through with great organisation.  Everyone had a great weekend and Dragan deserves a big hand for his effort and enthusiasm.

I was surprised there weren't more of Wellington's football clubs entering teams. Kapiti Coast were the only actual club side I think, and they had a bit of travelling to do to get there.

And I thought there would be a YF team entered for sure. Maybe next year?

Thanks for the feedback PAO-KCU won it becasue of the organisation and support that comes from being a club team (and their sweet skills!)- Universale was a new WUAFC lower grade team.

I think the Hilton Petone clash may have had something to do with the lack of higher grade club teams- As for a YF team, they were all gettign ready for the end of year bash!

Look forward to YF playing in culture kicks though~ ill try and seed them with somalia, myanmar and greece to make the group of death!

It is great that we are all talking about 'next year'  I t is recognition that this is the first of an ongoing sport here in wellington.  And wasn't it fantastic to see it on TV3 news,  to watch all those young people enjoying themselves and  having a lot of fun.

i watched a few games and it was a great spectacle but next year the organizers should do something about all that  sand on the pitch !

Clash with Hilton Petone meant we couldn't field a team.  Most of the exec are involved with club first or second teams and so are our regular ringers like Liverpool1.

We're in for Culture Kicks though.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Lets hope next years beach soccer can be well patronised. Perhaps a couple of weeks earlier in the year to prevent Hilton Petone clashes could be a consideration?
