Form striker Russell Kamo struck with two late goals to give Mainland premier league leader Woolston Technical a poignant win over arch-rival Ferrymead Bays.
Ferrymead coach Steve Bignall felt his side "threw away with four minutes to go" after two costly turnovers at a waterlogged Barnett Park in Christchurch.
But his Woolston Tech counterpart Keith Braithwaite said his charges had a special incentive to clinch victory. They wanted to honour rightback Nick Wortelboer whose younger brother died in a tragic road accident.
"We dedicated that victory to Nick and his family," Braithwaite said. "Nick turned up and played the whole 90 minutes and he was outstanding. In those last 10 minutes there was only one team that was going to win."
Referee Hamish Little played his part in a free-flowing game marred only by the pugginess of the pitch.
Tech came out firing but failed to convert some early chances before Ferrymead grabbed the opening goal. Hue Frame seized on an under-hit clearance from Tech keeper Tom Batty to round a defender and slot his shot home.
His goal sparked a period of dominance for Ferrymead, who led 1-0 at half-time.
Central midfielder Tom Lancaster capped another good game for Tech with the equaliser after the interval. Matt Thomas sprinted down the left flank and pulled back the ball for Lancaster to lash home from the edge of the 6m area.
Canterbury United star Dan Terris put Ferrymead ahead again with a fantastic header from a Denes Zatyko corner.
Bignall felt the Bays were "four minutes away" from a vital victory. "But then we gave the ball away and they equalised, and we gave it away again and they got the winner. They were both well-taken goals but they came from our mistakes."
Kamo tied it up at 2-2 with a left-footed volley and thundered the match-winner into the net.
Tech now has a four-point lead over Ferrymead, Western and Christchurch United after six of the 14-rounds. Bignall blasted the move to a two-round competition "as the worst decision Mainland Football's ever made". "It doesn't give any teams a chance to recover."
A Gerard Brown penalty gave United a 1-0 win over Western at QE II Stadium.
Dan Ede grabbed a hat-trick, including a late winner, in Burnside's 5-4 win over Nomads United at Tulett Park.
Halswell United remain mired at the bottom of the league after a 0-3 loss to Nelson Suburbs yesterday.
Meanwhile, Western remain top of the Mainland premier women's league after a 2-1 win over defending champions Coastal Spirit. Aimee Phillips and Liz Gilchrist scored for Western. An Erin Heine goal gave Halswell United a 1-0 win over Ferrymead Bays.
