Only thing I've heard Bob is that the Nike Cup in the Wellington region will be a College-only competition.

sh*t news if you're a good player at a poor school, or a club trying to keep your U15 players involved when they go off to College.

Also sh*t news because there is no way no how that any College in Wellington (except perhaps in a good year Wellington College) will put together a side strong enough to challenge the Auckland teams for the chance to play in Australia.

Is it true that 15th grade run by schools this year has been a stunning success?

Is is also true that schools now wnat to take over year 9 and year 10 leagues, ie 14th grade leagues and posibly 13th grades?

Schools want total control and whether players and parents like it or not and schools will have their way at the end of the day. Is it true that students die to play for their school soccer teams?

Yes to all the above and also it is true that schools do a fantastic job of running soccer, much better than any club.

Anyway.  This one's a lost battle, so next topic.

Anyone know of any changes in league formats for next year?

From memory, and remember this was DISCUSSED and not AGREED in any way, shape or form.  These notes are my reflection of discussions, and in no way reflect the actual opinion or intent of Capital Football in any manner whatsoever.  Also happy to be corrected by anybody else who was there.

1.  PROMOTION/RELEGATION:  Much discussion around the format of the playoff system for the Central League.  More or less unanimous agreement that a playoff format was less than appropriate, automatic relegation and promotion was more acceptable given past experience and track history of what actually happens. (Challenger winning promotion)  Main concern was Clubs that may have won the right to be promoted, not being in a position to make the jump from a financial or skill perspective.
RESULT: Capital Football to consider feedback and discuss with Central if they feel it is an appropriate direction to take.

2.  STACKING:  Angst abound regarding Teams playing Central League players in Premier League matches in the same weekend when possible. (1st on Sat vs Prems on Sun)  Understandable shock and dismay by most clubs that a fellow club would consider doing such a thing, unethical, poor form, it's just not cricket.  General agreement that it was inappropriate to stack, but the rules do allow the 'regrading' of 3 players each weekend.  Suggestion to play Central League matches on the same afternoon as Premier league matches when both sides from the same club are at home.  Met with mixed response from all clubs present.
RESULT: Capital Football to consider feedback.

3.  SOCIAL LEAGUE ENTRY:  Questions raised as to why a new team joining the Capital Football League has to start at the bottom and work their way up.  Suggestion to allow clubs to decide whether a team is 'social' or 'sociially competitive', and allow a mid point entry into Capital 5 or 6 for the competitive teams, rather than Capital 15 for all.
RESULT: Capital Football to consider feedback but looks like a favorable solution and quick win.

4.  LAST SEASONS LEAGUE AND CUP STRUCTURE:  All agreed it worked well, and should be persevered with for next season.  Only reservation was some clubs decided to pull the pin early and default games during the cup when they were out of the running for the Big Cup.  Gasps of horror ensued that fellow clubs would consider doing that after all of the whinging about lack of playing time last season.  Beggars belief.  Those clubs need to take a long hard look at those teams who default and don't just deny 11 players a game, but 22 or more.
RESULT: Capital Football to consider feedback but looks favorable to stay as is.

5.  LACK OF PADDOCKS:  The usual.  Not enough, too many teams etc.  Jamie Cross made it very clear than even a Sunday League would not resolve the pitches issue, as they will be closed regardless following rain whether it is a Saturday or a Sunday.  24 hours without a miracle worker won't have the paddock ready in time.

General round the room appreciation for Capital Footballs efforts in 2009.  That's all from memory, I may recall more if you have a specific question....

Is that a blanket generalisation Smithy? If so I would have to totally 100% disagree. Not with the point that schools do a fantastic job, but the 2nd part about them doing a better job than any club. Just put in my view and probably a topic for another forum.

Looks like some curly questions still to be answered around Central League/Premier League regrading. Surely it would be best to keep clubs who have a team in Central League out of Premier League and use this as the promotion step to Central League? Wouldn't this lead to a better spread of players around the Premier League clubs or does this weken sides when it comes to other important games like Chatham Cup time?

From Smithy?
You're kidding me?
And I can hardly let a chance go by to bag school's football given how our youth leagues are held to ransom by 2 schools down here (and have been since the year dot).
Do I detect disharmony in the school/club set up

What you can expect to pay more for next year

-yellow/red where dissent is involved

-not calling in a result on time ($20)

-colour clashes

-not meeting Prem Lge ground requirements

-not writing legibly on the team card (full names etc)

-Team mgmt abusing the officials

-playing an ineligible player

-inter-fed transfers during the season

Prob some others too

we're borderline too, we have half a pitch and half a cricket wicket, does that count?

+ more for refs/linos too

Players (apart from those in club first teams) pay and play. Do refs/linos get paid for been abused and dish out cards so players can pay more money? The only people who get paid in the game are office people earning some sort of living out of football.

Only thing certain about football is the increasing cost every year. Last year, it was increases for senior and next year, will it be junior's turn? The year after, back to seniors and the cycle continues. Is it surprising that palyers with decent ambitions want to be paid for their effort?

I think schools should gtfo and keep it mid week like some of the hutt schools do. I only played for Tawa (socially) when i was too old to play regional league for Wests where I had played all my junior footy. I didnt get along with any of them tawa folk anyway and hold a mad grudge til this very day

I hear there is automatic relegation from CL.
Permalink Permalink
about 16 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
That might make Palmy North Marist a bit nervous.

Early front runners to win CL seem to be Miramafia and the Bubbles. Both recruiting strongly.

Wests are an unknown - depends how many Dutchies or Americans they bring in - but the new supercoach certainly has all the paperwork to do well.

Sounds like Lower Hutt might lose a couple of key players, which could hurt them.

Who knows what Taranaki are up to. Or Napier for that matter, although both should be good enough to avoid relegation you'd think.

Wairarapa will either be decent or terrible, depending on whether their cast of imports returns. Could win it or could go down.

Tawa have been quiet, but maybe that's because I don't hang out enough with BobBolton to get the inside word. I can see them in a dogfight with Palmy North Marist and a couple of other teams near the bottom.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

What about club/teams that are working their way up div's?? Seems a little unfair if clubs get new teams that are suitable for higher div's then they should grade them within the club!!!
