Can't see a topic on Capital 12, so I am starting one.

Our first game this season didn't go to well, a 3-1 loss to Brooklyn Northern who were promoted last season from Capital 13 while we (Nth Wgtn Sinners) were relegated from Capital 9. I think the reasoning that we were slotted into Cap 12 rather than 10 was new teams being added from Nth Wgtn and a trade off was our lower league placing. Not that it helped on the weekend.

I must admit that Brooklyn are a good team. Well organised and everyone has got a good touch and allows them to pass the ball around and keep possession. They would compete very well with teams in Capital 9.

I refereed the first half and apart from a couple of dodgy tackles it was a pretty clean, good spirited game.

Table for round 1:

CAPITAL 12:
Island Bay Untd 9 Tawa Kingz 0
Seatoun 4 Is Bay Rampage 1
Lower Hutt DD's 1 LHC Ballkickers 5
Marist Loaded 2 Stokes Valley 6
Nth Wgtn Sinners 1 Brooklyn Northern 3

P W D L GF GA Pts
Island Bay Untd 1 1 0 0 9 0 3
Stokes Valley 1 1 0 0 6 2 3
LHC Ballkickers 1 1 0 0 5 1 3
Seatoun 1 1 0 0 4 1 3
Brooklyn Northern 1 1 0 0 3 1 3
Nth Wgtn Sinners 1 0 0 1 1 3 0
Is Bay Rampage 1 0 0 1 1 4 0
Marist Loaded 1 0 0 1 2 6 0
Lower Hutt DD's 1 0 0 1 1 5 0
Tawa Kingz 1 0 0 1 0 9 0
Some big losses sees us sitting in the middle of the table even after a 3-1 loss.

And the fixtures for the next round:

CAPITAL 12:
Stokes Valley __ Nth Wgtn Sinners __ Delaney 1 (12.30)
Is Bay Rampage __ Marist Loaded __ Wakefield 3;
Tawa Kingz __ Seatoun __ Onepoto 1 (12.30)
Island Bay Untd __ Lower Hutt DD's __ Wakefield 4;
Brooklyn Northern __ LHC Ballkickers __ Happy Valley 1.
I am off to a wedding so not going to make this one.

Not a good result for us on the weekend, a 8-1 loss to Stokes Valley. I
missed the game as I was attending a wedding in Otaki. I got the text
on Saturday evening informing me of the result, "1 all @ half time and
it ended up 8-1 to them. Not happy."

The results conflict with the table, a mix up with the Brooklyn Northern and
LHC Ballkickers result which I have italicised. I would assume the table is
correct and Brooklyn won 6-0, rather than lost. If that is the case it seems
like there is a top 4 already sorted out with every team below that with negative
goal differences already and those in the top 4 all have big positive goal
differences.

CAPITAL 12:
Stokes Valley 8 Nth Wgtn Sinners 1
Is Bay Rampage 0 Marist Loaded 2
Tawa Kingz 1 Seatoun 11
Island Bay Untd 8 Lower Hutt DD's 0
Brooklyn Northern 0 LHC Ballkickers 6

P W D L GF GA Pts
Island Bay Untd 2 2 0 0 17 0 6
Seatoun 2 2 0 0 15 2 6
Stokes Valley 2 2 0 0 14 3 6
Brooklyn Northern 2 2 0 0 9 1 6
LHC Ballkickers 2 1 0 1 5 7 3

Marist Loaded 2 1 0 1 4 6 3
Nth Wgtn Sinners 2 0 0 2 2 11 0
Is Bay Rampage 2 0 0 2 3 6 0
Lower Hutt DD's 2 0 0 2 1 13 0
Tawa Kingz 2 0 0 2 1 20 0

The draw for the next round:

CAPITAL 12:
Seatoun __ Island Bay Untd __ Seatoun (12.30);
Marist Loaded __ Tawa Kingz __ Velodrome;
Nth Wgtn Sinners __ Is Bay Rampage __ Nairnville 2 (12.30);
LHC Ballkickers __ Stokes Valley __ Fraser 3;
Brooklyn Northern __ Lower Hutt DD's __ Happy Valley 2 (12.30)

Is Bay Rampage 3 0 0 3 2 8 0
Lower Hutt DD's 3 0 0 3 2 22 0
Tawa Kingz 3 0 0 3 2 27 0We won, first of the season and slot into the middle of the table. A top 4 clash between Seatoun and Island Bay Untd resulted in a narrow win for Seatoun. I still see this division as a battle between the top 4, then 4 mid table teams and two struggling to stay in touch with midtable namely Lower Hutt DD's and Tawa Kingz who have both had heavy losses to teams not in the top 4. Still a lot to play for.

Our game was a scrappy affair. In the first half Island Bay Rampage had the better of us with what seemed a quality fill in and us being short of a player for 20min allowing them to dominate the midfield and break quickly especially down the flanks. Though we still went up following a free kick aimed at Blobby on the back post and he used his size to squeeze in a volley to score through a box full of players.

After the break, said quality fill in had disappeared, and the tables were turned. Playing into the wind we played more controlled and spread play better. We were winning most of the 50/50 balls and making it hard for Island Bay to get momentum, territory and  possession. We dominated the majority of the second half and after numerous fluffed chances we were awarded a penalty under slightly dubious circumstances. Being 2-0 up were dropped our concentration and Island Bay Rampage scored one not long after the restart. A quick break and cross in the middle that none of the 4 defenders could clean up or close down the 1 striker whose slightly duffed shot sneaked into the corner. From then on we controlled the game better and Island Bay Rampage were focusing their attacks around their better players, so we could easily close them down and tried to stop any counter attacks.

Draw for Round 4:

CAPITAL 12:
Stokes Valley __ Brooklyn Northern __ Delaney 1;
Is Bay Rampage __ LHC Ballkickers __ Wakefield 4 (12.30);
Tawa Kingz __ Nth Wgtn Sinners __ Onepoto 1 (12.30);
Island Bay Untd __ Marist Loaded __ Mcalister 1 (12.30);
Lower Hutt DD's __ Seatoun __ Fraser 2 (12.30).
A top of the table clash between Stokes Valley and Brooklyn and an interesting clash between 4th and 5th which could see if Marist can break into the top 4. We are off to Tawa and hopefully we put in a good display.

Round 4:

A top of the table clash between Stokes Valley and Brooklyn finished with Stokes Valley winning 4-2 and maintaining an unbeaten start to the season. Seatoun are also unbeaten following an easy win against Lower Hutt DD's who are yet to register a point and have had some heavy losses. These top of the table clashes are interesting as the top 4 teams seem pretty close and if they have lost it has been to other teams in the top 4.

3 teams follow on 6 points who again seem to be a competitive group with each yet to play each other but having similar results against other teams in the league. Then there are the bottom 3, each without a win. Having played against Island Bay Rampage already and Tawa Kingz, I am sure that Island Bay Rampage should get a win over Tawa who definitely seem the weakest team in the league.

Our game against Tawa was a game of two halves as the saying goes. After a first half of force back with not a lot of chances, we had about 4/5 and Tawa 2, the scores were locked at 1-1. In the second half we were a lot more composed on the ball and switched play quickly creating a lot space for which we opened them up and scored 6 in the second half, it could have been more. A big part might be that our GK from the first half played up front in the second half and scored a hat trick, one being a beautiful right foot volley on the run from just inside the 18 yard box.

I should have scored, after a neat bit of passing between myself and my CM partner (a 1-2 1-2 combo) put me through 1 on 1 with the keeper. I composed myself, aimed for the corner to calmly pass it in and fluffed it wide.

CAPITAL 12:
Stokes Valley 4 Brooklyn Northern 2
Is Bay Rampage 0 LHC Ballkickers 4
Tawa Kingz 1 Nth Wgtn Sinners 7
Island Bay Untd 2 Marist Loaded 1
Lower Hutt DD's 0 Seatoun 6

P W D L GF GA Pts
Seatoun 4 4 0 0 24 4 12
Stokes Valley 4 4 0 0 23 6 12
Island Bay Untd 4 3 0 1 21 4 9
Brooklyn Northern 4 3 0 1 20 6 9
Marist Loaded 4 2 0 2 12 9 6
LHC Ballkickers 4 2 0 2 10 12 6
Nth Wgtn Sinners 4 2 0 2 11 13 6
Is Bay Rampage 4 0 0 4 2 12 0
Lower Hutt DD's 4 0 0 4 2 28 0
Tawa Kingz 4 0 0 4 3 34 0Round 5:

CAPITAL 12:
Is Bay Rampage __ Brooklyn Northern __ Wakefield 4 (12.30);
Tawa Kingz __ LHC Ballkickers __ Onepoto 2 (12.30);
Island Bay Untd __ Nth Wgtn Sinners __ Mcalister 2;
Seatoun Pirates __ Marist Loaded __ Seatoun (12.30);
Lower Hutt DD's __ Stokes Valley __ Fraser 3 (12.30).
We have a tough game against Island Bay United and we would be doing well to get something out of that game. Since the top 4 aren't playing each other this week I would think they are all going to pick up wins and LHC Ballkickers to beat Tawa Kingz.

Is Bay Rampage 5 0 0 5 2 20 0
Lower Hutt DD's 5 0 0 5 2 31 0
Tawa Kingz 5 0 0 5 3 44 0A very predictable round just looking at the results. All the teams that should have won did,
just a the margin on a couple of the games was larger/smaller than anticipated. Mainly Lower
Hutt DDs having their smallest defeat, losing 3-0 to Marist Loaded. Stokes Valley had a big win
against Is Bay Rampage and Brooklyn giving Tawa Kingz their weekly beating.

Our game against Seatoun was played on a sodden pitch, luckily we were on Alex Moore 2
rather than 1 which was close to a mangrove swamp. A slight breeze in our favour in the first
half and some good play both in attack in defence and we went into the break 1 up. Seatoun
had started the game very aggressively and with the conditions conceded a few free kicks, it
was especially quick in the midfield with challenges flying in. We had a few chances to score
more, one shot rattling the crossbar from about 18 yards. In the second half Seatoun got more
control of the ball and we could not put sustained pressure on their defence. Seatoun scored 2
goals quickly after the restart and filled their midfield who broke quickly to support their lone
striker, making it tough for us to link up with our strikers. Seatoun do have a good attack and
midfield both quick and fit, but their defence isn't great and I could see them have difficulty
against Brooklyn who I think are better throughout their squad. They also might struggle against
Stokes Valley, I missed our game against Stokes Valley and members of our team thought they
were better than Seatoun.

Fixtures for Round 7:

CAPITAL 12:
Stokes Valley __ Seatoun Pirates __ Delaney 2;
Is Bay Rampage __ Island Bay Untd __ Wakefield 1;
Tawa Kingz __ Lower Hutt DD's __ Onepoto 2 (12.30);
LHC Ballkickers __ Nth Wgtn Sinners __ Fraser 4;
Brooklyn Northern __ Marist Loaded __ Velodrome.
Teams that should win Brooklyn over Marist and Island Bay Untd over
Island Bay Rampage. I am picking Stokes Valley to remain unbeaten
and hand Seatoun their first loss. Otherwise the remaining fixtures
could be close. We are playing Lower Hutt Ballkickers who are even
on points with us and just behind on goal difference. The other
interesting game is between Lower Hutt DDs and Tawa Kingz, both
bottom of the table and leaking goals. Can one of them get a win?
I think so and pick Lower Hutt DDs to win.

Round 7 review:

Is Bay Rampage 6 0 1 5 4 22 1
Lower Hutt DD's 5 0 0 5 2 31 0
Tawa Kingz 5 0 0 5 3 44 0

Well, I got a couple of picks wrong. In what would have to be shock results, Marist beating Brooklyn 2-0 and the two Island Bay teams drawing. Marist always had a chance, but looking at previous results and comparing them with teams we have come up against, I was always thinking Brooklyn should have this in the bag, will have to watch Marist in coming weeks. Island Bay United should really have beaten Rampage, United are in the top 3 and have had good results all season while Rampage up to this point had not even gotten a point from their 5 previous games. I predicted Stokes Valley to win, Seatoun aren't too bad but Stokes Valley are physical side that can put teams away and Seatoun does have weaknesses in defence.

The only other result left to comment on due to the postponement of the bottom of table clash is my North Wgtn Sinners vs LH Ballkickers. This was a terrible game for us. Coming into the game even on points and a couple of goals behind LH I was thinking this could be a close game, one we had a chance of getting a result but it all went pear shaped pretty quickly. Playing out at Fraser 4 on a shortish pitch which compressed the play LH had better technicians in key positions and could control possession in tight situations. They also exploited holes behind our full backs to get in behind and put pressure on us. The first half was frustrating, LH were a player short for the whole first half and we couldn't control the ball well enough, switch play or create chances even with a player advantage and went into the break 1 down to a penalty. It didn't help that our 'keeper re-injured his calf muscle in his first game back after being out all of the season and had to leave the field after 10mins and another of our players injuring his knee in a high speed clash which resulted in a A&E trip, on top of that we had to have our now only sub reffing as LH were short. Even though, we were outplayed and in the second half with 11 players now LH carved us open to the tune of 5 goals. We had a few chances, most falling to one player whose stats must read for the season 15 shots (of which 3/4 must be open goals) and about 4 on target with no goals, but didnt take any.

A quick look at our season so far, we are 5-4 in the first half of games and 7-18 in the second. That 7 is a bit misleading as 6 second half goals came in one game against lowly Tawa. Anyway it shows that we are unfit and tactically naive not being able to shut out teams when we go into the break leading or drawing.

Round 8 preview:

CAPITAL 12:
Tawa Kingz __ Stokes Valley __ Onepoto 2 (12.30);
Island Bay Untd __ Brooklyn Northern __ Wakefield 2;
Seatoun Pirates __ LHC Ballkickers __ Crawford (12.30);
Lower Hutt DD's __ Is Bay Rampage __ Fraser 3;
Marist Loaded __ Nth Wgtn Sinners __ Kilbirnie.
Round 8 preview:

Picks for the week, easy win for Stokes Valley - probably aiming for double figure, Brooklyn to just beat Island Bay United - both are smarting from disappointing results and need a win to put pressure on the top 2, Seatoun to beat LH Ballkickers - might be a tight game and Seatoun would have to be on form in defence otherwise I think they have enough talent to score goals, LH DD's and Rampage could be a close game but will pick Rampage as draws are rare in this grade - DD's seem to be only better than Tawa at this stage, for our game we (Nth Wgtn) will be doing well to get any result out of this game and Marist should win but I so hope we do.

Edit: Added LH DD's win over Tawa, as predicted a win to LH.

A huge win for Marist last week after Brooklyn failed to turn up for the game. Well deserved result as I feel we played the better football on the day. Their new striker will be one to watch in this league.

Its no longer a problem.

Round 8 review

CAPITAL 12:

Lower Hutt DD's 7 1 0 6 9 36 3
Tawa Kingz 7 0 0 7 4 67 0
Without knowing if the Island Bay Untd vs. Brooklyn game was played or not, this was a rather predictable round. Stokes Valley absolutely drilling Tawa, I was expecting double figures somewhere around 10-12 goals but 20 is amazing. 1 goal every 4 and a half minutes. Tight wins for Seatoun and Is Bay Rampage. Our game against Marist wasn't too bad, not a great spectacle. The first half was all Marist scoring very shortly after kick.We could not switch play or control possession well enough and take advantage of the space on the wings, we managed a couple of sojourns one resulting in a equalising goal which Marist replied straight after the kick off to retain the one goal advantage. Towards the end of the half, a neat ball behind the defence and a slide/shot past our keeper put Marist 3-1 up at the break. The 2nd half we gained more ascendancy and for periods put Marist under pressure but could not convert any of our chances. Marist though were still dangerous on the break.  Marist were awarded a penalty for our defender taking evasive action and the ball striking partly his face and his hand, evidence of ball on face was left by mud and the balls stitching. So 4-1 down at that point and time running out we managed to pull one back but the game was all but over. 4-2 to Marist.

Round 9 preview

CAPITAL 12:
Stokes Valley __ Island Bay Untd __ Delaney 2 (12.40);
Is Bay Rampage __ Tawa Kingz __ Wakefield 3;
Nth Wgtn Sinners __ Lower Hutt DD's __ Raroa (12.30);
LHC Ballkickers __ Marist Loaded __ Fraser 3 (12.30);
Brooklyn Northern __ Seatoun Pirates __ Happy Valley 1 (12.30).

Stokes Valley to beat Island Bay Unt; Stokes Valley have looked impressive so far this season and should win. Is Bay Rampage to beat Tawa; Tawa could possibly go the whole season without getting a point, at the moment they concede almost 10 goals per game. We (Nth Wgtn Sinners) should beat LH DD's, we have to make sure of a win and not take this easy at all. LH Ballkickers vs Marist could be an interesting game, I am going to pick a draw. Marist are performing beater in the league but LH are not far off in terms of ability on the pitch and could prove difficult to beat so a draw. Brooklyn vs Seatoun, I am picking Brooklyn to win, I missed our game against Stokes Valley and our game against Is Bay Untd was cancelled and other than that Brooklyn are the best team I have played this season and should beat Seatoun.

Edit: added in Brooklyns 3-2 win over Is Bay United, as predicted "Brooklyn to just beat Island Bay United" and now are in touch with the leaders Bullion2008-06-04 17:28:20

Round 9 was cancelled, so onto round 10 and the first of the return fixtures:

CAPITAL 12:
Island Bay Untd __ Is Bay Rampage __ Wakefield 4 (12.30);
Seatoun Pirates __ Stokes Valley __ Miramar 3 (12.30);
Lower Hutt DD's __ Tawa Kingz __ Fraser 4;
Marist Loaded __ Brooklyn Northern __ Cobham;
Nth Wgtn Sinners __ LHC Ballkickers __ Raroa (12.30)

My picks, Is Bay Untd to beat Rampage, Stokes Valley to beat Seatoun, LH DD's to beat Tawa, Brooklyn to avenge their loss to Marist and win this one and a draw between Nth Wgtn and LH Ballkickers as the game is at Raroa and is not conducive to football.

Games to watch are Stokes Valley against Seatoun, 1 vs. 2. Stokes Valley should carry on their perfect run. Lower Hutt DDs vs Tawa, 9 vs. 10. Tawa are polar opposites to Stokes Valley and could end up with the worst record in all divisions this season. Brooklyn vs Marist, 3 vs. 4. I am going with Brooklyn on winning this and avenging to what I thought was a little bit of an upset when Marist beat them a few weeks back.

Lower Hutt DD's 7 1 0 6 9 36 3
Tawa Kingz 7 0 0 7 4 67 0
Ok, how did my picks do? Seems I picked 2/4 with one result still to come through. First on the list I had picked IsBay Untd to beat Rampage and possibly easily at that; but Rampage lifted their game and recorded only their 2nd win of the season. Barring a win for Tawa this is the upset of the round. Stokes Valley again beating Seatoun and look like going the season unbeaten (I hope by stating this fact I may put the dreaded "commentators curse" upon them). Brooklyn, as I predicted, avenged their loss to Marist quite convincingly in the end 5-1 and is probably the performance of the round.

I had optimistically predicted we could get a point out of our fixture with LH Ballkickers but went down 3-2. It was a blustery day at Raroa with 4 of the 5 goals scored with the team playing with the wind. The game started off evenly with chances at both ends before a cross from the right and a mix up in defence, two of our players converging on one attacker and leaving one free, allowed a simple goal for LH. From there LH played with more confidence and put pressure on our midfield and defence making it hard to clear from defence and link with our attackers. They added another goal, a neatly worked move again originating from their right. We scored one, on one of the few counter attacks we managed in the first half. LH were unlucky then not to have a penalty awarded to them for a handball in the box blocking a cross, though they managed to score one just before the end of the half to go into the break 3-1 up. In the 2nd half LH played a little bit more defensively and very narrowly, outnumbering and putting pressure on our centre midfielders making it tough to switch play to the wings where there was lots of space (I know because I was on the left wing most of the 2nd half). We had a few chances to score; I had 3 shots and probably should have scored one of them which I tried hitting low and across 'keeper from the left but was blocked by a sliding defender when I could possibly have whacked it in on the near post. But after creating a few chances we couldn't find the back of the net until we were awarded a penalty for a handball in the box blocking a cross, almost identical to the incident in the first half, but this time awarded and in our favour. 3-2 and with time on the clock we just couldn't control the game enough and pass the ball accurately enough to team mates to put LH under any real pressure. They managed to spoil, win 50/50 balls and pick up any of our loose passes to play out the game and even create a couple of chances themselves.

It was a frustrating game, showing the lack of technical ability of a few team-mates to pass and tactically to move into positions to receive a pass. LH are a decent team and have a couple of smart players and  switched from an attacking 442/433 to a 4141 in the 2nd half.

Round 11 preview:

CAPITAL 12:
Stokes Valley        __    Marist Loaded        __    Delaney 2 (12.30);
Is Bay Rampage       __    Seatoun Pirates      __    Wakefield 3;
Tawa Kingz           __    Island Bay Untd      __    Kura (12.30);
LHC Ballkickers      __    Lower Hutt DD's      __    Fraser 3;
Brooklyn Northern    __    Nth Wgtn Sinners     __    Happy Valley 1 (12.30).
Stokes Valley to win, Seatoun to beat Rampage but after round 10 results Rampage could upset, Is Bay Untd to go for double figures against Tawa, LH Ballkickers to deal to LH DD's and Brooklyn to beat Nth Wgtn - hopefully we put up a good fight.
