New Zealand Football: Age-grade football power shifts further north

April 19, 2009

AUCKLAND - Auckland Football Federation's hold on national age-grade silverware is over after their northern neighbours United Soccer1 claimed the overall honours at the Perry Foundational National Age-grade Tournament in Napier on Sunday.

Winning both the U-16 and U-14 boys titles, United Soccer1 (which covers Waitakere, the North Shore and Northland) edged out Central Football, who failed to win an individual title but claimed second placed overall thanks to consistently strong showings in each of the six divisions.

Champions for the past two seasons, Auckland slipped to fifth overall but did manage to successfully defend their U-15 boys title.

Mainland Football prevailed in the U-14 and U-15 girls divisions to finish third overall while tournament MVP Kate Loye inspired Waikato/Bay of Plenty Football to the U-16 girls title.

Fourth overall, Capital Football may claim to be the unluckiest of the seven regional federations after finishing second in four divisions, three of those by a solitary point.

The u16 boys had a great result to beat US1 (the eventual winners) on day 4. From memory US1 have won that age group (1993 boys) for the last few years and thats the first time our lads have managed to beat them.

Agree nightz.  They went one better than last year and finished 2nd.

Also big ups to Jon Harahap who took the U15s on massive steps forward.  Last time they were getting pumped 6 and 7 nil...this time their first win ever and a draw with US1.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
