Island Bay/Ole 5 - Marist 2

Island Bay 1 up at half time. Game was pretty even, Marist pretty rooted by injuries, our quality striker once again getting a head injury. IB deffinitely deserved to run away with it.

IB/Ole - complete twats post game though (mostly aimed at staff not players). Ignored Bryan and our manager (no handshake) and the whole squad showered and left straight away. Pretty goddman poor. Didn't think there was that much drama on the sideline. And frankly I'm glad they aren't going to win the league. Besides maybe their striker they are a good bunch of lads, management though... well Brian gets heaps of stick, but they are in no way better.

PS - their... no other way to describe him... black lad that came on, holy crap. Took throw ins like.. well a bullet, fifty yards dead flat at pace, was insane!

Anyone know what happened in the IBU Karori game? Heard there was a bit of a dust up but looks like the kids pumped Karori. Looks like the UH Stop Out game was another close one, UH dropping points for only the second time. In our game we went down 0-1 to Miramar in a pretty even match. They might have had a couple more chances than us but we were in in for whole match. We created bugger all in the second half but hit the post late. Should have taken our chances in the first half.

Saw wharf bay. First was a pen which was harsh. Match had a bit of niggle as ref never took control. Wharf got one sent and then came out at the break (2-0) trying to chase the game with back three and got shreaded a fair bit.

Speaking of, anyone know what Kilbirnie Park is like at the moment?

Kilbirnie seemed alright the other day. Obviously not a snooker table given it's July.

It's passable - hell of a lot better then it was a few years back. The work they have done on it has helped. The big question is whether they actually get out and mow the damn thing

Yeah that's the most frustrating thing. The idea is that if the field is too wet there's no point putting a machine on it because you'll cause more harm than good but (in my professional opinion) I've seen plenty of un-mown fields around that could have had a mower over it easy. Kilbirnie has been one of the worst for it, I've seen it like a meadow before. I guess those council workers just probably CBF on a friday though...

I watched them mow Nairnville today. It is a swamp - but because the mowers have a heavy roller it actually improves it

The weight from a machine brings moisture to the surface. If it's really wet it will only make it worse. If it's a bit boggy/muddy and bumpy it CAN smooth it out - we haven't had rain all week so I'd say Nairnville would have dried out enough. Generally though I think they pull pin on mowing the fields often when they could easily get a mower on. I guess it's not going to help that the council got rid of their turf manager and replaced him with an arborist....yep, to manage their sports fields...

Marist have to be the worst footballing side in the league but I guess credit to them for persisting with it and it is effective for them sometimes. Not pretty to watch though and wouldn't think it would be too enjoyable to be part of.

I dunno - winning one nil, and most likely not getting relegated is pretty enjoyable.

I could say we have had a hard season player wise, but why make excuses. We play the way we can, with the players we have. I was pretty damn happy keeping the ball out of the net in those conditions to be honest

Permalink Permalink

Yeah and well done to you guys, you did really well to keep us out considering how much of the ball we had. We're a reserve team by the way, problems with players is a week by week thing for us and we just try our best with what we end up with each week but our main objective is to play open football, while obviously trying to win which is proving tough. Fair to say we're gutted with that result especially considering how well we played in those conditions so forgive me for being somewhat bitter.

Well done Upper Hutt for claiming the title.  Easily the best team in the PL.

Permalink Permalink
over 13 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

Yeah agree they are deserved winners. Does anyone know what happens if Upper Hutt get promoted and Maycenvale go down (back to the Pacific Premiership) leaving Capital Premier with 9 teams, and if either of Island Bay or Karori finish in the promotion positions in Capital 1 (as well as Uni who will go up), who takes the last spot in the league? Will it be the 4th placed team in Capital 1 or the last placed team in Capital Premier?

last place would go down to cap 1.  Second last stays.

Island bay and Karori are ineligible to be promoted so if Vic, KCU or North Wellington come in the top three, then they will be promoted.

But IF Upper Hutt get promoted and the relegated Central League team is not a capital team and last placed Capital Premier team gets relegated, then there will only be nine teams in Cap Prem (10 - UH and last place = 8 + VU or NW = 9). Who makes up the 10th spot, last place in Cap Prem or fourth in Cap 1?

No 4th placed team can get promoted. So 10th placed would stay up. there is hope for you.

Pretty farcical that with two full rounds to play the entire league is wrapped up. Only being topped by the fact no one could get relegated!

Also farcical is the bottom half of the table. Wainui beating Stop Out and Island Bay, and losing to Petone. Marist bumbling it's way through the league. Stop Out's performances all season.

Besides Upper Hutt, no one has been consistent this year at all

I thought this was the case. What does it mean for the rest of the grades? Is it worth it's own thread? I realised there was a chance of this happening awhile ago but we don't want to rely on Upper Hutt for the simple fact that they don't had a good record at the pointy end of the season in terms of their push for promotion.

I don't think farcical is the right word. Agree with teams consistency problems. We've played some good football this year but have struggled to turn it into results. In fact whenever we have got a result we haven't particularly played our best football. I think the best teams know how to win more than one way because it can turn ugly at times. Our firsts learned that lesson two years ago and we're starting to understand it. Difference being lot of innexperience in our side. Do think we deserve another crack at it though. Knocking over wainui this w.e would help.

Gonna be tough for upper hutt due to the fact there could be a five week wait till the playoffs!! I guess we will have to play a few of the u19 teams to keep us going

Some Central football regions still have some rounds to go, then they must decide if they want to go in the play offs for a chance to play in Central League.

Doesn't necessarily matter. I'm on the CL committee and we made the reg to avoid this

I was trying to say - UH have to wait until Central know what is happening any way - which may take most of August. Which is as you say why the delay in play offs.

Another game posponed in the Pacific Premiership this weekend - been raining for two weeks straight in Gizzy. What is the likely outcome, will UH have to wait five/six weeks? What's the committee saying Feverish?

Anyone else know what Feverish was talking about then? "Regs say the play offs are first week of september" Obviously leagues have to be completed before playing off so do the "regs" mean nothing in this case or are the Central teams going to be shafted?

That would be correct CF have to wait until Central football leagues with a chance to go to C/League are completed unless they(the clubs) advise they have no interest in going into C/L. I have heard at this stage Wanganui City and 1 Gisbourne team want in.

Stop Out get in the NEWS! Crikey! On page FIVE of the print version bypassing the sports section...   Now as I wasn't at the Wainui game so I have to ask,  how bad was Martin's offending?

It was discussed having an ideal best before date for the playoffs. Mainly due to the women's game last year. Central were going to try and achieve this - but I guess if they are that far behind now then it isn't going to happen.

Team gisborne has decided not to contest a CL playoff.  In addition, current equal leader of the Pacific Premiership, Taradale, are ineligible for the playoff as it is their second team.

That means, Upper Hutt will play either Palmy Marist or Whanganui City for CL.  Which could be decided this weekend. Note - 17 game season for the Western Premiership.

You were well lucky - Petone had the better off us today. They scored 85th minute, we kicked off, went down the other end and scored.

To say they were gutted is an understatement
