Petone have to avoid a repeat of last seasons choking and qualify first.

I think its hard for any team that gets promoted to be competitive - the bulk of the players in the top 4-5 teams are unlikely to move so it makes it harder for these teams to be competitive - lets face it, you need seasoned experienced players to be competitive.

But perhaps the focus is not about winning the CL but competing from a regional perspective its good to have the Nakis, Gizzy, Palmy to provide exposure of football that would not normally be available in those areas.

It also allows the youngies a pathway through to CL, NZFC and who knows A-League??

Let me get this right. Taranaki finish last and get a second bite.

<RANT STARTS> Hmmm so a team could lose every single game in the League, say, FIFTY-NIL. Get a 0-0 draw in first leg of the playoff and then win 1-0 and till stay up. That's nuts....  The current system means you can score ONE goal in a season and stay up. My idea is , stay with me here, if you finish last you get relegated. </RANT OVER>
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I like the idea of the play-off - if the team that wins the league below is not better than what is already there, why should they go up.  If the bottom team lose every game 50-0, but still beat the top team from the league beow, logic suggests to me that the other team would lose by more than 50-0 every week.

I tend to the thought that gving the last place team a second chance is rewarding failure.

I see that point, but there is also no benefit with replacing them with a team that is worse than what is already there.

I think I tend to agree with Frankie M

If in a 2-game playoff a team that is on all roll winning most games all season can't beat a team that has lost every game that year (even if they only lose 1-0 in the playoff) it shows that, at the very best, the teams are pretty much equal, and the team from the lower grade hasn't strongly shown it deserves to be up there.

Sorry to mention rugby, but its a bit like the NPC div 1 and div 2, northland used to lose every game all year, but they'd always thrash the winner of div 2 in the playoff bcos there was (pre salary cap) a big gulf in the divisions

I think Petone will be fine. They'll attract a few new faces as always happens when teams are promoted. I think 3-4 new players and they will be very competitive. Probably not top 4 but won't be as bad as the 'naki.

Its no longer a problem.

I 100% agree with dairyflat here. You lose, you're gone. Bottom teams get relegated in all other leagues, but not from CL for some reason.

Naki should be punted and Petone or Maycenvale (who?) go up.

If Petone go up, they will actually be a stronger side next year given their ability to attract quality players as a CL team. Whereas Naki will be as strong in the playoffs as they will ever be.

Poor system. Needs changing.

In fact, if you won the play offs on pens, you could potentially score NO goals all season and still stay up

A playoff is a must.  The gap that can emerge between leagues in this country is two big.  Why not have Team naki  play off against Petone or Maycinvale. Remember Naki were good enough to win this playoff less than a year ago.
Also dont write off Maycinvale.  8 ex national league players and one ex all white.  Can't be all bad.  I have heard most there ex national league players are only there because thay can't get a game at City Rovers.  But I'm sure the playoff is far far far from a sure thing for Petone.

how does it work?

maycenvale vs petone and the winner plays taranaki?

Taranaki have had their go over the whole season and shown that they aren't good enough, I see no reason why they should have another opportunity via the playoffs.  Playoff form means nothing for the next year, a team could be conceivably much stronger the following year after promotion once they attract players keen to play at the higher level (or in Taranaki's case weaker, apparnetly they lost qute a few of the side which won their playoff).

Because the Middle of the country's leagues have split in the East and West leagues, they have to play off against each other (at this stage it looks like Pamlerston North End v Maycenvale).  The winner plays Petone, who then plays Taranaki...I think the difficulty of that process also reinforces that Taranaki should go down, the winner of that has done the hard yards and deserves to go up!

Maycencale play Red Sox Manawatu in HB and Palmerston North End play Napier Marist in Palmy in Central zone semi finals (or the 'Rod Pelosi Challenge'), winners play off in final, and the winner goes through to play Petone.
