Na, this was mid 1990s too. As a junior we played in maroon as Karori before the merger with waterside.

Recession = more people getting desperate and jumping on the pokies = more money for amateur local clubs to blow on average players
Not sure what you based this post on but I think you'll find that most, if not all local clubs are consistantly having their grant funding reduced. Even if their was more money coming from grant funding it would have little to no impact on paying players as you can't apply for funding for that. The things clubs would normally apply for (Equiptment, uniforms etc) just wouldn't be purchased if the funding doesn't come through.

Players ARE being paid that much in central league though so it's not at all hard to 'believe' that figure. As stated by MH clubs want to win for pride etc so if one club is paying players that much every other club has to pay that much of they want to be realistic about winning the title. Obviously about five clubs are managing to do that and the rest are making up the numbers (or going broke and/or getting relegated which I've experienced).
How many players in the central league would you say are being payed up near the $10,000 mark? Maybe a couple from Rappa but that would be about it I would say. Still don't believe that figure thrown out by Zoro at all.
A lot of people will jump to the defence of clubs who pay big dollars to bring in players to their clubs, sure it boosts the profile of the clubs and can bring the club promotion, club pride from winning etc which is good and all, but personally all I see it doing is destroying the smaller clubs who simply can not compete on a financial level with the Miramars, Rapas, Burbs etc who all have wealthy backers.
The small community orientated clubs like North Wellington, Brooklyn, Wainui, Marist, Wainui, Naenae etc etc struggle so much to draw players to their clubs because now they are financially unable to do so. When they do produce some local talent, a big club comes along waving $$ signs in the players face, which as said is always going to be hard to do when you're getting some pingers for something you love. I'm of the opinion that if clubs continue financially the way they are, then there'll be no choice but to make the process transparent and declare a salary cap in CL, to even out the playing field.
My ideas are obviously riddled with flaws, but I'm just not sure what else can be done to put the entire football community in Wellington on an even playing field across all grades.
While I do agree with some of what you say Chopper there are also a few problems that those "smaller clubs" create for themselves. Only Rappa really has someone who is pumping money into a team personally to win. The other clubs mentioned have a club structure that works for everything that it gets and has. They have people who regularly fill out forms to apply for funding, they have people working on fundraising initiatives and they have people working to improve their coaches and youth players. In my opinion and experience of those smaller clubs, they don't have those things in place and that is also a big reason they struggle to attract and retain players. I don't see those smaller clubs producing young talent at all, they may have some young players who have plenty of talent but I don't think that is any reflection of anything those clubs have done apart from having a team for them to play in. I would say that is actually the main reason those young players leave to clubs who do have more in place to aid their development. Although I would say I have seen North Well doing some good things for their young players so not entirely sure why they lose players.

Sad news today for all involved around the football community with the loss of a great football man. Miroslav Tvaroh has tragically drowned at castlepoint beach. Great loss to Wairarapa united, Wairarapa Heartland and the Wairarapa Football Academy. RIP brother. You will be missed.

Tragic news for those in the Rapa. Played with Merrick at United and had to be one of the most committed trainers and players I have ever met. Looked to be doing great things for youth football in the region. Massive loss for Wairarapa Football. RIP.

I see from the latest Central League Draw that Lower Hutt have given up trying to get another season out of Bell Park and are playing their home games at Fraser # 5.
I know their clubrooms/changing rooms have been on the market for a while. Maybe they have gone and that has forced the issue.
Seems like this is the year they make the full move to Fraser.
Any noise on player movement yet or is everyone waiting for the first round of the HPT.

not sure why they would do that? Bell is good for most of the year isn't it? Fraser is a horrible place with bunker changing rooms. I guess if they have sold the clubbies at Bell then there isn't much option.
Thought you would have the answer for that Feverish. The benefit of having several pitches available where your facilities are. Opportunity for expansion. Possibly an artificial surface, Plenty of parking. How many Lower Hutt juniors have come through the grades and on to senior football and never been able to play on their home pitch at Bell Park.
Perhaps someone from the club could elaborate on what facilities are there now , and what could be available at Fraser in the future.

Something like this I think. The long term vision for Fraser Park has two sand based grass pitches and artificial surfaces too iirc. Will be mint eventually. Not sure on timeline though. Fraser Park, like Petone Memorial 1, has pretty much been let go.
There are some catches with Bell though. Think the club owns the clubrooms, but perhaps not all of them? I'm scratching around my memory here, but it's not as simple as putting it up for sale. I think the council is the only realistic purchaser, unless the land is made available.

i know that football is a profressioanl sport at senior level .
so a club can pay players as well as buy and sell players as well as sell there club rooms and get new ones if they want.
football is not amateur like rugby union used to be, where if you got paid money you got black listed
i just hope Lower Hutt don't get screwed and loose more than they gain from the move to Frasier park as we need good strong clubs in wellington so the standard stays high and players stay local.
though i am glad bell park is gone as it was never a good ground for me (wins0 loss2)
this is also why paying top players who put time and effort into also keeping the level of football high is good for all, even the clubs who cannot afford to pay
as some have already said it's not always money that players want….coach,level of play,quality of other team members as well as some other points can build you a top team and hold onto upcoming stars….
remember that 20 year old that shows promise today and if he is really good???? you would want him to play top football (overseas) not central league for olympic…..

The trouble with tawa is they are incestral - I mean look at the coach only has the gig because his dad is the president...
You may think that but it is more in the fact that Tawa does not have the money like other clubs to go out and pay for the coach. In saying that I'm sure there are a lot of people who play champs or on the bench in central league squads (younger and older players) that may want to impress and Tawa is a great chance to get regular 90 minutes of football and show your worth
You look at the last five Tawa first team coaches. Dan Wood, Martin Romijn, Richie Martin, Phil Crawshaw and Bill Bradley all have had a lot with Tawa football over the years. Think that kind of proves the point in that Tawa can't just go out and pay someone XXX amount to coach and be a director of football at the club
So none of the above mentioned names have never been paid a cent footballmad?
What makes everyone think that the clubs actually pay the coaches? I would say most, if not all top coaches are paid through money obtained by funding. Probably also why a lot of them are listed as a "director of football" , when they are nothing more than the first team coach in a lot of cases.
It won't be that Tawa can't pay a coach, it's that they either aren't prioritizing paying a good one or are not applying properly, if at all for that.

Wests or anyone would be welcome I would imagine. And as for the paying of coaches I wouldn't know exact amounts. But if they get paid it would be a little gesture of appreciation
