Why do they get their 'expenses' covered?

Capital football and NZF do not hide their subs work it backwards from that fee and you will find no club is making money from individual senior or junior subs when you allow for kit replacement etc.

Some players at Rapa are paid up to 25k. What kind of expenses add up to that sort of figure? Not sure about other clubs but guys like Luis Corales, Andrew Abba, Fifi, Rider, Fa'arodo among others don't play for free. One thing is for sure, the more successful clubs are spending more and yeah, that's just the way it is.

This. I think it's generally grant money or sponsor money that goes to player payments.

"Miramar Rangers have yet to be beaten in Central League play this season and lie second on the points table behind the only other unbeaten side, Wellington Olympic."

This from the article. I guess the headline is alluding to Miramar being one of the top sides. More interesting is the photo of Masterton AFC's home ground. Now that does look rural. I reckon the centre circle was roped off with a couple of sheep grazing in it.

I like the comment about the headline and you are correct in stating that.  However, the photo is of the Douglas Villa home ground, which is Memorial Drive.  And we at Masterton AFC dont rely on sheep grazing as we own our own ground, and have a tractor for that.  Memorial Drive is maintained by the council, and you could be right about the sheep there.

In regards to paying players, i would be interested to know what "expenses" are actually covered under players getting paid to play, considering i know a few players that have played for Wairarapa United, and their "expense" bill must have been pretty large, knowing the figures these players were getting.  But at the end of the day, as long as it doesnt come out of Local sponsorship (not individual but trusts etc that other clubs can tap into for running costs), and it is not detrimental to local footy, who really cares???

In the last years miramar had womens teams I put close to $15000.00 in. No player payments were made just the costs associated with the womens game.

Better ways for money to be spent. Cutting junior subs and increasing junior participation as a result etc. even lowering senior fees a bit. Invest in some junior coaching I suppose (admittedly that's a bit fine). A few seniors and juniors parents probably don't like the fact their money is going toward paying the first team.

But yeah some valid points there too.

Saying its just the way it is, is pretty dismissive of the problem. I do understand though that it is a natural choice - paying players is almost something of a dominant strategy, when actually clubs would all be better off if nobody pays players. The problem is if a couple of clubs pays players, other clubs are better off following suit.

I doubt any club has greater fee income than than the out going fees to NZF and Capital football. Talk to the gear managers of clubs senior or junior - replacing gear missing gear and up keep of remaining gear is a big cost.
Goodnight enough on this circular topic.

Doesn't mean there isn't better areas in which $1100+ per week could be spent at the club.

But yeah think that's all there is to say. Like I said, its a natural choice given the situation, but I'm in no doubt we'd be better off if no club paid players.

I really only started off being my usual sarcastic self, but it turned a bit serious.

Problem is only some clubs can because grant money isn't distributed evenly. It's pretty tough out there in that regard but some clubs can barely pay bills let alone even consider player payments.

I think the point i was making was that if you have a individual sponsor (like yourself or PK), and the choice of what they do with their money is theirs.  Its when local grants are used for player payments, does this not reduce the amount of money available to other clubs for running costs?  I individually sponsor our Cap 3 team, which includes new strips and travelling expenses, training gear etc.  I do this so we dont take up the money available to our club from grants etc, for local level.  It has cost me quite a bit, but i do this to support the club, and try and give a stepping stone to younger players wanting to play a higher level of footy (higher than local league).  We have had a couple of players come from MAFC to Wairarapa United, including a young fellow who has played a few games off the bench for the Central league team.  I am like most players, if i was asked to play for money, i would.  But at a local level.  Its a different story if players are paid to play, and are from outside the region.  They are not there to support the "local" game, just supporting their pockets.  I have no issues with clubs like Olympic/Miramar paying players, as most of these players are Wellington based, and have been brought up through their "local" system.  Its when you have 70% of players not from the region, taking local players places, and will walk once the money dries up.  Seen it before and it will happen again, where the money disappears, and so does the support for the game.  Just look at the Wairarapa United Womens team from few years ago.  Now there is no womens football at all in the Wairarapa.

The topic always comes up because its difficult for some to get their head around some of the money being spent. The only way it could change is if the governing body made new rules and had full access to clubs books to regulate it. even then clubs would probably still find ways around it.

Not good Olympic have enough trouble with player numbers.

Heard today Wairarapa changed to a Blue strip to play Olympic and this was not picked up in the C/Football C/League mid week teams notification and confirmation sheet.  (By Olympic - edit)

Does the Rapa playing blue cost the club in points or something like that? Seems strange that you would just play in a completely different strip.

It is no offence if they advised C/football on the mid week player schedule. Think it just caught Oly out.

Can Miramar bounce back and take down Olympic.

Or will the loss of players on either side decide the game.

Upper Hutt v Lower Hutt at Maidstone at 3:30, preceded by Upper Hutt women's Central League Side v Seatoun at 1:30.

These are of course merely curtain raiser to the Cap 4 , bottom of the Table Clash between Upper Hutt and Lower Huttt at 5:30!
