great work Olympic. congrats to the coaches as well. Finally harnessed what has always been a good mix of old heads and young skillful kids.
Well said...it has been "work in progress" over the last 3-4 years ...and yes finally that has started paying dividends. We have a good mix of young players and the odd old head and yes the future of the Club looks great....Long it may continue.

Just noticed that the most draws any team had was Palmy with 4 then Naki with 3. All the rest were on 0, 1, or 2. Normally there is one team who are the draw specialist.

Its no longer a problem.

So who is Calcott knobbing to get dispensation to use WCC grounds when they are closed? And what's the word on the private turf they want to build?

Miramar Rangers' dream season

New Miramar Rangers football coach Matt Calcott could hardly have hoped for such a dream debut season.

Rangers won New Zealand's knockout football competition, the Chatham Cup, beating Auckland's Bay Olympic 3-1 in the final two weeks ago.

They also came agonisingly close to winning the Central League, only to be pipped by a strong Wellington Olympic.

Calcott said losing the league was a disappointment, "but you can't expect too much in year one".

He gave Olympic credit for their efforts.

"We got 45 points [in the league] I've won the Central League three times [coaching Western Suburbs] and never got 45 points," Calcott said.

"To be honest, Olympic's done pretty well to get that many points [49] and win it."

Miramar, Olympic and Western Suburbs have led a revival of Wellington clubs on the national stage.

Olympic won the Chatham Cup last season, following Wests in 2006. Miramar last won the cup in 2004 the first win for a Wellington club since Miramar won in 1992. Calcott said his move to Miramar after eight seasons at Western Suburbs was a breath of fresh air.

The club's history was a big lure for him.

Next year he intends to focus more on Miramar's junior club.

"Year one was about trying to get the first and reserve team in order, and I think we've done a good job at that," he said.

"But year two's really a junior development-type focus establishing new junior facilities. You can't expect to develop players if they're not training. If they have three or four weeks where they only have one [training] session, that's not fair on the kids really."

Calcott was pleased the first team was able to use the new artificial pitch at Nairnville Park for their Tuesday morning training sessions.

The team would train from 6.30am until 8am, then again on Thursday evenings on the grass at Miramar Park.

"Nairnville's quite central, so it was fantastic. It was a great initiative really. The session was always on because it's artificial."

Wellington City Council allowed Miramar to train on a specific area at Miramar Park, even when grounds were closed owing to bad weather.

"So that's a lot of progress from our point of view, or else you'd just be running the roads."

"[It helped] 100 per cent. I don't think we missed a training session."

Calcott is looking to improve Miramar's performance next season.

"I'd like to think Miramar's always got a shot. It's a club that's got a lot of history and should always be in the top two in the league as far as I'm concerned."

I imagine that there is real demand for the artifical at 6am on a Tuesday morning

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Welcome Maycenvale.

Well deserved. But Akina Park is no Pukekura Park. Time for an upgrade me thinks.

Maybe they could speak to City Rovers to see if they can play at Park Island.

highly likely they will play at the new sports park being constructed on the parallel to the hawkes bay motorway. even if they were to remain at akina, it has a better surface than what most of the welly clubs can offer

They are assuming there will be a Central League next season. I wonder if they have seen this

There are a few questions in there about the Central League.

$1500 a game to use apparently. Owned by Hastings Council so they might struggle to get them to upgrade Akina Park or anywhere else that might suit - don't know where that might be though. Can't see them going to Napier, they are a Hastings club, would be like Lower Hutt playing in Upper Hutt.

I think you might find that Graeme Hill (Maycenvale Club Captain) has quite a bit to do with the new Sports park so some strings may be pulled.

Lets hope he is pulling them already then! what about his plan to put a Artifical pitch at Akina, i'm sure HB Softball will be real pleased about that.

Well,I was getting a bit worried to be honest.... was wondering when someone was going to start "fishing" . Well as you know, Olympic attracts all sort of nationalities (and of course a vast majority of the Greek boys) however we will not force anyone to play for Olympic if they think that they can get a better opportunity playing or money wise somewhere else.... we wish them well and the Club is always open to them if they wish to come back or indeed to anyone who wishes to play for the "Greeks".
George B last year played for Rapa and obviously he thinks that he can get a better deal at LH. There is nothing wrong with that, everybody is free to do whatever they wish.

'vale's best player Tom Biss to Lower Hutt.

I think you will find most players had gone to vale due to the change of coaching at Rovers.. E.g. Grant Hastings (Former Vale Coach) to Rovers and someone else taking over at Vale.. Different coach different club and a goal of making central league for the first time. Also - Shaun Peta (Goalie) to Rovers. But few HB united players other than the ones from Vale last yr maybe joiningg there side.

From the Hutt News:

He is experienced - at changing clubs every season! What is that? 5 clubs in 18 months? I wonder who he will play for next year?

Lower Hutt obviously concerned that Petone are again the top side in the Valley. Really can't see them finishing any higher than 5th or 6th this season.

Petone to win it this year.

Too many letters to fit up front.
Would look like a scrabble board.
Stick with short names like McLay or Kamri.

Oops, let that slip!!

They should be used to that by now and just accept that they are a distant 2nd best.
