"Celtic fans club Bohemian Celtic"

Ha ha, what? Bohs are an Irish-community based team, nothing to do with organised Glasgow fandom (though I assume there is some overlap).

So you're saying their not Celtic fans (despite naming their club after them!)
It's the same as West Auckland isn't actually anything to do with organised Glasgow fandom even though the Kiwi True Blues (an organised Glasgow fandom example) are based there
It's still going to be Celtic v Rangers whatever the semantics

.... what? "Celtic" is an ethnic term describing Irish people (among many others). Have you honestly never heard it used to describe anything but the Glasgow football team?

Yeah the southern games look kinda crappy, none in Dunedin yet, honestly surprised that Grants Braes didn't get shoved in there but what do I know, will have to wait till the first round proper to get any here.

I can just see it lets create a football club - hey we'll call it Celtic because we're Irish, nothing at all to do with the football team in Scotland (formed by the Irish)

But what would I know I'm just one of the "many others" ie I am a Celt and definitely not Irish!

For what it's worth there are a few Celtic rugby, netball & cricket clubs in NZ. Timaru & Ashburton spring to mind. Timaru Celtic with links I understand to the local Catholic HS - Roncalli. I imagine most of their members have never heard of Parkhead or Ibrox.

But yeah most NZ rugby clubs with Catholic links are a Marist or derivative.

I believe one of the predecessor clubs of Western Springs was Grey Lynn Celtic FC, but I think that was a reference to the Glasgow club, given the strip which WS still wears.

The name of Bohs is actually much more a reference to these guys

I would be curious to see the logic for the North part of the draw that sees 4 NRF1 sides get byes.   Instead of 11 preliminary round games in the North, they could've had 7 preliminary games, leaving only the 12 NRFP teams to have a bye to the second round.

A similar thing happened in the womens side as well on the northern half.  2 non-NRFL sides have byes when they could have played 2 less preliminary games and just left the 6 NRFL sides having byes to the next round

I shall query this – I'm not going to go through the effort of figuring out if it is this, but the one explanation I can think of would be wanting to avoid matches between teams from what used to be Northern Football and teams from WaiBop in the preliminary round and round one, even if it means handing out random byes.

I do wish NZ Football would just explain all the various quirks and restrictions ahead of time.

I don't think it was for avoiding inter-federation games in the North half as there are NFF v AFF and AFF v WaiBOP fixtures, although interestingly no NFF v WaiBOP fixtures.

In 2019, NZ football put out a little graphic that showed the path and merge points (google search revealed https://www.cambridgefootball.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/chatham-cup-2019-lo-res.jpg) but did not indicate how byes were determined.  Looking at 2019 in the North only the 12 NRFL Premier sides got the bye.

It should be
Round 2 = 12 NRFL Premier + 20 Winners from Round 1
Round 1 = 24 NRFL Div 1/2 + 16 Winners from Preliminary Rounds
Preliminary  = whatever necessary to whittle the additional entries down to 16

Previous CC games
2009 Tawa 4 Douglas Villa 1
PICK Tawa to win easily

College teams (Wellington Coll/Grammer/Mags etc) use to enter so probably 13 or 14 if the player was good enough to make 1st XI in early years

Jeez expected better from FC Nelson. Suburbs should bury Rangers anyway.

Any idea on when the Round 2 draw is?

Pretty uninspiring games in Central.
Wairarapa v Napier the only truly tasty-looking one.

Yeah unfortunately a lot of these around the country still look pretty straightforward at this stage. Most Northern League and Central League teams with pretty easy fixtures.

Of note in the South actually should be Queenstown v Uni... Uni have struggled a tad of late, and they had a very close game in Queenstown a few weeks ago. Certainly not the draw they'll have been hoping for.

Bay Olympic vs Western Springs will be pretty good, two mid-table Premier teams

Onehunga-Mangere (runaway leaders in div 2) vs. MAP (mid-table div 1) will also be fun, but maybe that's just my family connections to MAP talking

Bahaha idiots

Hmm, I can’t help but thinking whether this kind of stuff would have happened at Forrest Hill, hindsight is 20/20 and so forth.

The trouble came from playing Yousif Al-Khalisy, who they just signed from Auckland City on Friday 29th May, and had him registered for their match the next day against North Shore, in which he was substituted on in the first half as an injury replacement. That result went off without issue, so they obviously didn’t think this game would be any different.

Through a lack of due diligence or just carelessness, they didn’t check the registration rules for the Chatham Cup which apparently state a player must have been registered for 10 working days to be eligible. Yousif started, and because it was only 6 working days, he was therefore ineligible. Kind of sums the operation up though, their first Chatham Cup game, against a very average team in the 4th tier, they stumble through (should’ve been a lot more than 4-0, West Hamilton were terrible), to then lose by default.

It’s stuff like this that, when they get relegated, will keep any players who are Northern League quality, or are promising kids, away. Birkenhead have their strategic partnership with St Mirren and are top four, plus have Paul Hobson who recruits well, it’s no wonder so many of the best kids leave to go there.

I would like to see the regulation changed if I'm being honest - I think working days is very hard to define in an organisation where most of the "work" is being done on Saturday and Sunday.

The regulations for the cup used to be they had to have played two games - that was moved to a measurement of days as the games regulation could be too easily manipulated - so if the intention is to be two weeks then make it 13 or 14 days - not business days.

Not saying I have any sympathy for Rovers - 10 working days was the rule and they either didn't know it or ignored it - I just think it should be changed.

Good cup tie at Shepherds Park today. Birko 1 Auckland United 0
30 yard or so from Sam Burfoot late in 2nd half . Took a deflection i think. Pretty even game but think Birko just shaded it. Neither side had much in the way of strike power . Monty Patterson did most of his best work 30-40 yards from goal whilst Alex Grieve had one of the quietest games i've seen. rain made the pitch quite slippery in the second half. Auckland United quite a physical team although Birko did largely match that.Interesting that Birko only had two players on the pitch i think (Hirst and Burfoot) that were in the cup winning team of 3 years ago. They keep bringing young players through. Good afternoons entertainment. If Birko get a run of home draws don't be surprised to see them progress a long way

Hobbo does a good job of signing young kids, he probably has tried to sign every good teenager on the Shore and used to pillage Forrest Hill youth teams, so eventually he hits with them, but you’ll also hear less glowing reviews from the many he recruits then discards
