Do you think that Mirimar will go on to win the cup this year? Miramar have been given a great draw, as they get to go down south to play Dunedin Tech. Do you think that Tech will cause any problems against such an illustrious club?

Lets not forget about Wests (putting aside Central League form) that from memory have lost only 1 Chatham Cup game in regular time in the last 4 years.

2004           They were knocked out by Lower Hutt from memory in the early rounds (3-4?).

2005           They were kicked out for fielding an ineligible player during their victory over Petone.

2006           After the game ended 0-0 after extra time. They defeated Eastern Suburbs in the final in penalties, thanks to Phil Imarys heroics.

2007                      They finished runner-up as were defeated by Central in penalties after the game ended 0-0 after extra time.

2008                      Will play Nelson in the quarter-finals down there

Whats the possibility of anyone picking a Wests starting line-up these days? Players seems to come and go every week. Have they got a lot of injuries? Having watched the Lower Hutt game on Saturday, I can safely say that my own pace level lies between that of Luis Corrales and John Harahap.

Any time you have to travel to Dunedin it's not going to be a great draw.  Tech are a good side, probably close to Otago United and they will be up for it.  Miramar are strong favourites based on their form but don't underestimate Tech at all, I think it will be a difficult game, especially if the weather does its trick

my money's on tech good strikers ie Burgess lang skillful midfeild with coburn and scoullar and strength at the back with chisholm and prattley

The one ? mark is over the keeper Nick Tarrant i believe from your neck of the woods. some of the things he did raised serious questions.

But still my money's ion tech not that i know what mirmar are like  did i hear correctly are they coached by graham little????

Burgess and McKenzie are both useful goal scorers.  McKenzie was one of the leading scorers in US College football a couple of years back and Burgess has been playing in the New South Wales Premier League for the last five years.

A few Questions...

Is it actually still possible for two wellington teams to meet in the final? I know for the first few rounds they keep it pretty local but Wellington teams seem to do alot more travelling than the auckland teams why is that? Why not send a Auckland club down to play against a Southern club?

No-one gets sent anywhere Reefside, it's the luck of the draw.  Central went to Te Puke in the last round, Miramar went to the Naki, that's howit goes

Mosgiel have at times put together some decent sides (Mike McGarry is still coaching and turning out for them) but those three teams have definitely been dominant for at least 5-6 years.  Caversham and Tech just have much better set ups after playing in the old national league and Roslyn have always been strong despite a major dip in form in seasons '01 and '02, coincidentally when I was turning out for them and we were really, really bad!  Big club, plenty of coin, they've never struggled to attract players.

Caversham produced loads of young talented players and probably play the best brand of football.  They've also generally tapped the student market well.  Both Tech and Roslyn have traditionally used more local players with the odd overseas import.  Although this may have changed in the last couple of years.

There is a huge gap in the ability of the best player in the league to the worst, much bigger than in Wellington or Auckland.  But there are definitely some decent players knocking round.

Rab Smith's website www.soccerotago.co.nz is regularly updated and has photos and match reviews (except at the moment, I think he is away) and should give you some idea about the opposition for Miramar.

Nah it was completly open. The draw was done on t***ers show on radio sport about 2 weeks back and it was a complete fluke that all the Auckland teams met each other and both southern teams are playing at home.

Actually what do you thinks gonna happen this weekend

Heres my pick
Western 4 Nelson 1
Central 2 Glenfield 0
Waitakere 0 East Coast 0 (Waitakere 4-2 on penalties)
Dunedin Tech 2 Miramar 2 at 90 mins (Tech 3-2 aet)

Hmm interesting picks. I'll try pick the 2 northern fixtures but i'll leave the other two because i have no idea as to the strength of the central or southern sides.

Central 4 Glenfield 2

Waitakere 1 East Coast Bays 2

Glenfield have been scoring goals for fun recently and will grab a few here but ultimately Central will be far too good. Bays will edge it in a tight match vs Waitak and continue their remarkable perfect season.

Three for me, and two for them.

Tried to match the draw , had over 30 attemps but never came close to this draw, maybe it should be done on TV next time to stop " complete flukes happening "   My picks

Wests 3  Nelson 0,   Central 3  Glenfield 2,   Waitakere 1 East Coast 2,   Dunedin 1  Miramar 4

I think people are sorely under estimating Nelson, if Wests keep playing the shambolic way they have. Nelson could easily have it over them, they have pace in droves up front

Nelson won well on sat

EVAN BARNES/Nelson Mail

MY BALL: Nelson Suburbs' Hamish Lewis, left, takes on Richmond Athletic's Mike Campbell in the premier league game at Saxton Field on Sunday.

Harder, better, faster, stronger. Nelson Suburbs was never going down to Richmond Athletic at Saxton Field.

Mainland Premier League leader Suburbs on Sunday asserted its dominance from kick-off, pinning Richmond, which is so far winless this season, in its own half in the opening minutes of the game.

When Richmond began fighting its way to the other end of the field, Suburbs was able to open up the lightning counter-attacks that would win it the game 3-0.

Hamish Lewis started the textbook play that would open the scoring only seven minutes in with a pass down the right wing to Joses Nawo. Simon Gatward-Smith chested down the cross from the Solomon Islander and blasted the ball past goalkeeper Karl Numan. The defenders were caught dead as Suburbs moved the ball as if just doing a practice field drill.

Just after Suburb's first goal, Richmond's Matt Mitchell, in his first game for the club on return from a stint in Australia, tried to even the score with a dig from the edge of the penalty area that went just wide of the far post.

It was the first of few for a team that sorely lacked an attacker with a finishing touch. Two of the team's most able attackers, Billy Scott and Darren Cunningham, were unable to play due to illness.

Suburbs was also missing two key players, Kidston Billy, out due to injury, and Mike Bothwell, who was away playing for a Mainland representative team against the Wellington Phoenix in Christchurch. However, with Nawo, Gatward-Smith, Lewis Hamish Allan, Joel Wiechern and Adam Smith all on form, there was no shortage of firepower.

After its initial burst, Suburbs began to lose momentum, with its trademark flanking attack at times dissolving into midfield scrapping.

With some of the pressure off, Mitchell and Tom Martin began to push towards goal, though never close enough for a serious scoring opportunity.

At the other end of the park, Glen Pearless was taking on anything the Suburbs attack could throw at him.

Suburbs reignited 10 minutes into the second half when Nawo whipped through the Richmond defence after collecting a huge throw from Suburbs goalkeeper Brent Fletcher, to send the ball wide of Numan with a strike at the bottom far corner.

Nawo tried to repeat the performance but a slip on the wet turf allowed Richmond's defence to get back before he could make it a double.

Richmond twice might have ended its 10-week goal drought but for a header on goal that had no power behind it and Mitchell being called offside after he'd slotted the ball. Every other attack was frustrated by misjudgment or Suburbs' committed defence.

Fletcher assisted Suburbs' third goal with a huge kick that found Hamish Allan alone with only the keeper to get past.

In a bizarre decision in the final minute of the game, Suburbs co-coach John Brydon called Fletcher forward to receive a corner kick, which the keeper smashed to nowhere.

Suburbs co-coach Brendan Crichton said he was glad to have the game out of the way. Richmond assistant coach Mark Henderson admitted his team had simply been out-played.

Caversham remains at the top of the premier league after an impressive 5-2 win over Dunedin Technical.

The result was a small consolation for losing to Dunedin Technical in a Chatham Cup knockout match last month.

Did anyone go to this match?
