late notice, but I am heading out to watch the Petone vs Miramar game.  Shouldn't be a bad one - top in Wgtn premier league vs 2nd in central league.  It should provide an interesting barometer to the difference in class between the 2 leagues.

I'm assuming by the result that the gap was still pretty big?

We gave up with Miramar up by 3 after 30-40 minutes and headed for Ole.  The Brooklyn Pints won the big Div 13 curtain Raiser over Petone Martians.

We lost to MAGS.

I am gutted. Ref was a shocker, as were his two assistants.

Jesus H, this will keep Fallon crowing for months!! Don't bother buying Soccer Talk next month as sure as sh*t Fallon will be telling all how great his side is...and I'm sure you don't want to read about that. In one way it's great to see a college side beat a senior team, but just as long as it isn't a team I follow.  As it turned out, Melville had a tough tie away to 1st division leaders Lynn Avon, and I see Melville won 2-0. Must be the return of Steven Holloway and LJ Pijnenburg making the difference. Be cool to see Melville draw MAGS just to see how good they are. What's happened to the NPL? Have standards dropped that much?

Nah we just played like sh*t and the ref was sh*t. Their keeper played well though he made some good saves. Any other day and we'd beat them comfortably.

Takapuna 3-1 Taupo. Early goal to Takapuna then Taupo equalised in the second half. Within a couple of minutes Taka made it 2-1. Taupo had a man sent off. Two footed tackle from behind. Straight red. The Takapuna player did a mini knee drop on the Taupo player. Bit lucky not to get booked. Taka made it 3-1 in the last minute. Poor Buffy slipped on a banana skin.

Yeah and it sucks big time. I've experience my fair share of Chatham Cup defeats since i started watching my club's 1st team play football way back in the 90's and this takes the cake.

I just hope some complete minnow goes far now, so long as they aren't MAGS!!!!

2-1. 0-0 at HT, MAGS took the lead through i have to say a very well worked free kick a la Beckham/Terry on the weekend. Then we equalised about 5 mins later from a deep cross and header. Not too long after the dodgiest penalty since 82 was given by the feeble ref, and converted for 2-1. They held on thanks to two great one on one saves from their keeper, and the ref not giving us a penalty for a handball in the box. Oh, and we had an earlier goal disallowed for offside, despite the fact the ball was cut back and the scorer diving forward onto the ball!!!

    Interesting to read your comments regarding the referee. I play futsal in a team of oldies and we have a team of youngsters (16 - 17) in our league who every time we play them receive "protection" from the ref. this is really frustrating and contributes to quite a bit of agro.
    How do you feel about a school team playing in the cup? Personally it frustrates the hell out of me, if they're good enough to play at that level they should be playing for a club. I believe that football NZ has got this badly wrong and it is hampering the game in this country!

Miramar v Olympic next round, what a cracker, unfortunate we should meet so early, but sh*t happens.

Went to the Maycenvale Utd vs Gissy City yesterday...good game and 'Vale played well first half and were well worth the 1-1 halftime score.Gissy took control second half and deservedly won 2-1.Most impressed with Gissy #9.

I'm with you Frankie, I think they should open it nationally much earlier.  How cool would it be to have Wairarapa or Marist playing in Hamilton or Dunedin or somewhere in the next round ? 

Spread the interest and let some of these clubs experience something different.  Might also be a good way to finally gauge the relative strength of football in different regions.

Anyone want to comment on the Tawa vs Wests tie - there was a really good size crowd.

While Tawa did not sit back, there was a lot of passion and enthusiasm from them, Wests should have won by 5-6 goals (maybe more). Wests looked a little tired (from there league game against Gizzy) but they could still play below par and win. Well done to Tawa for giving it heaps.

Be really interesting to see how Marist approach the next round with Wests.    

Was a previous comment regarding making the Chatham Cup an open draw earlier. Whilst it is a great idea the cost factor can be extreme. Ngaruawahia United made the semi finals a few years ago and that cost them over $10k to send the team down to Dunedin for the game.

I agree that the cost is too prohibitive to open it up earlier. Keep it as it is.

Playing at the Marist club, travelling for a Chatham cup fixture does sound like a nice idea, however I do think that the cost could be an issue....I really don't believe there is a huge amount of money in the coffers (though i may be wrong).

The one change I would like to see is to stop holding the final at North Harbour Stadium. The place is like a morgue - hardly anyone there. It's aloss-making exercise for NZF. Why don't they look to hold the final in Wellington as a curtainraiser to a Phoenix game? I'm sick and tired of all the big games getting no further than Auckland, especially when history shows they don't support the big games spectator-wise. And don't quote the O-League final as being an event that was proof they can support the game. It was supported by the away team. There was 9000 from the local Fijian community there to follow Ba, whilst it took me most of the game to find a Waitaklere fan to photograph.

I heard you are not allowed curtain-raisers to A-League games. Anyone confirm or blow that out the water?

Can't give you an answer on the curtainraiser thing Feverish but I know when we hired Waikato Stadium for Waikato FC we couldn't hold curtainraisers - primarily because there would have been an extra charge to cover the 1.5 hours that stadium staff would have to be in attendance.

Kiwi - Im not talking about the stadium hireage/cost side of things - just that I dont think the A-League allow it for some reason. I think someone mentioned it in regard to having Team Wellie as the curtain raiser. Has anyone ever seen a curtain raiser before an A-League game?

One Knights game had an Auckland Korean community vs Auckland Chinese community match before it from memory.

Back on topic. At this stage why don`t they combine all the north island teams together? Then it is a coach trip to the game. It would make for a long day. Travelling to or from Wellington/Auckland. It seems that it is weighted in favour of Auckland teams. How would the best teams left in Wellington go against Takapuna or Manurewa mid-table in the northern 2nd division or Papakura struggling in the northern 1st division or Mt Albert Grammar school?
