1 0 to the good guys today on a fabulously warm Newtown cauldron. Ed Peryman with a typical CB goal, West miskicking a fabulously well struck coner 4 times, Ed with the long hair making the only correct boot to ball connection in the end to send it zinging, yep that's zinging, into the net in the 1st half. Watch that man, him and Davey Mac are good footie players in the middle of the defence so Park Life, before you spout for next week's preview, show you've done some research for a change. Anyway, back to the action, despite Welly U missing both Mike Groom and his world famous brother Andy (Park Life do your reaearch once again) mixed it up with the Western Suburbs boys and battled on. It's a fabulously good world watching from the home Grandstand  when a supposedly better footie side is reduced to playing long balls because the fortress is just too strong. The rooms were buzzing after. Hard luck to western suburbs they were too short of quality today and their mood was made worse by the news of the TW win  -another week without the stars (but why should it matter?). Their best players out of position too, that didn't help them at all. Anyway, back to the game, Dale was our MOM, but our whole side did the biz. Fabulous all round. Over and out from Newtown

i believe Park Life picked you to win. Would you rather they dont?

QUOTE: The Oranje have form in their favour leading into this clash though and for once Park Life is picking them for the win, although it won't be an easy one.

quote the whole thing Greenie so others can put it in the true context. Park Life said quote 'The Oranje have form in their favour leading into this clash though and for once Park Life is picking them for the win, although it won't be an easy one. The will be without the services of goal scorer from last week Mike Groom and their back four of relative unknowns will have to cope with the well organised play of Calcott's Wests'.
Park Life caught up with Oranje coach Ross Durant. "We're very pleased with how things are going. We were comfortable in the league last year (they finished 7th, ten points adrift of 6th placed Rent-a-Team United PL)and this year we'd like to think we can mix it with some of the big boys" he said candidly. What he meant was 'yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee we've got Wests early in the season.' unquote

Yep PL picked us - grudgingly. But our back four has held good teams goalless this year -Oympic (5 zip winners over Wests), Palmie (3 goals today v Lower Hutt) -conceded 2 v Wairarapa (they scored 5 v LH and god knows how many v your lot). Need I go on? Find the time to come along and see our back four yourself rather than relying on other equally uninformed punters. Also, Park Life should at least get player names right. Andy Groom is the correct player and btw wasn't playing today. Finally why get a quote a coach and then make up things that he said?

i was waching the game today as a mutual spectator and i have 2 say it wasnt a pleasant game to watch with wgtn united playing long balls(as usual) and being under a lot of pressure from western suburbs near the end of the game and were lucky not to lose atleast 3-1, wests just couldnt find the back of the net today.united had a couple of chances on the break of play because of wests chucking all men forward to try salvage a point atleast.(that was in the second half)

overall it was really bad quality from both teams id have to say in the end, and i dont think that the ground helped much either.

also i dnt know what wgtn united keep bragging bout,in all honesty they did okay in the pre season cup(really not that big of an achievement, beating the likes of  miramar and olympic who both were missing a number of players) and have beat 2 average sides thus far in the league, lets wait and see what happens when they play a real team.

so i dnt reakon all you united supporters should keep reffering back to the hilton, and pick up a few more wins before getting cocky. once that happens il happily shut my mouth, sit here and take it i promise.

gotta remember it's a long season.
Don't start counting chickens just yet - though maybe the fact that you already have your full squad (ie no one at TW) could work in your favour - as you won't have to adapt by chaning your team around to accomodate people like some other clubs will.
Well done on knocking off the bib boys - and look forward to seeing your mighty back four in action.

Gees you make it sound as if West were peppering our goal with shot after shot.  I recall only making one real save from Harahap in the first half.

There was one clear chance which the guy chipped wide other than that nothing to worry about. Yep it wasn't a great game I agree. Our record though speaks for itself and but we did beat Marist who drew with LH yesterday. I heard Marist had some NZFC players back though so maybe we have been 'lucky', its just that I don't think so. Who really knows at this stage of the season? BTW, how many TW players are Wests missing? I can only think of Adam Birch and there is one more i know of but can't remeber his name. Are there really 7 out as someone has indicated?

Jeez Feverish the only way you'll see our back 4 is if we play you - Chatham Cup or god forbid a CL promo/relegation playoff. It must be a fair while since you strode around Newtown (on the pitch that is). We'd love to come up to Karori for a look at the Park and the rooms at some stage, some our guys are so young they've never played up there. Ross of course would know where it is but not many others.

Those of you with long memories (well at least for round here) will remember that Wests suffered the identical scoreline on the first day of last season (either Groomie or Will SMith got the goal).  And then the rest of the season was a different story as evidenced by the final table, worth noting you Oranje jumping for joy.

I remember that. Some sloppy defending by Wests just like Saturday.  It wasn't Groomie got the goal.  Just looking at Wests team again from Saturday, they still had some good players there - Harahap,  Dave Johnston, Jake Gleeson, Ben Feld, Rowe (maybe). So they were no mugs this time round. We were missing Groomie and he's very underated outside Welly U.

I heard a whisper that Imray was heading back to england, dazza not playing for a few weeks as he wants a break and that Rupert was out for a majority of the season injured. Can anyone clairfy that??

Ive also heard Imray not playing, Mike Wilson and Rupert (long term) injuried.
Maybe they have some new signings. Whos Schaffer and Tinkler playing for?

Yeah no doubt Schaeffers could go to wests. Daniel Ellensoln could be another.

Although O League is a long way off, if TW win place will Stu let players play CL or will he want to rest them and just have them training. I'm sure those clubs affected will be hoping they are released.

Would a TW player want to play CL footie and then go straight into an O League comp and the next NZFC? I'm thinking they would want a decent rest and winter footie may not appeal anyway after playing through a summer.

The question should be asked, if TW is competing in the O League should the players also be expected to be playing for their clubs over winter?

Over a number of years it could be asking to much of some players. I guess they will be the ones that need to answer that question but its more likely most will just bow to clubs expections of them and their performance or longivity in the game could suffer.

Another point of interest to me is that many O league games are played mid week. As most of the TW players work normal hours, more so than the Auckland players are rumoured to do, the franchise is going to have to get more professional.
