any Young aspiring football player who is left out of the college team should get the mates together and ring their local club. U21 Sunday league will stop the rot.

If you were a half decent player then you wouldn't care about the current U21 grade. If you were good enough for 1st XI then you would have been far better off playing college then playing U21. U21 at the moment is only really for players that aren't good enough for 1st XI or are out of college and aren't good enough for the top few sides. Would be interested to know who you are AJ21, sounds like you were the same year as me at Tawa college and weren't good enough for 1st XI football.
I don't really understand the hate towards college football. It isn't a waste of time at all. A lot of the good players within Wellington have gone through the college football ranks. Sure if you are a superstar then by all means play club football instead of college football (e.g. Louie Fenton playing Tawa 1st team in his 6th form year instead of playing 1st XI). But for a lot of players playing 1st XI is a good option, and far better than playing for your clubs 3rd team or playing 16th grade regional league.
Ideally if you are a good player, then in your 6th and 7th form years you should play for college in the morning and then for your club's 2nd team in the arvo if possible.

Yeah college football was so poorly organised in my day (99-03), i played for wests 99-01, then reluctantly played for my school (Tawa) in 6th form for half a season, then got f**ked off and went straight into senior club footy in my final 7th form year.I wish I had the option of U21
You're better of playing on your playstation or better still stick with club football
I'd also be interested in your rationale for college football being poorly organised in your day especially in the years 2002 and 2003 when your college (Tawa) won the 1st XI title in both of those years, and a lot of those players have now gone through to Tawa's 1st team which is now in Central League. Sounds like you really have a bone to pick with Tawa College and Tawa in general.

I agree with Oranje. If you are reasonably good but not exceptional, then college football is great, lets skills develop without worrying about bigger stronger people pushing you off the ball. If you are exceptional (good enough to play Central League/Cap Prem, maybe even Cap 1 for a top clubs second team) then of course you are better off being able to play there. For the majority of kids in the majority of colleges, college football is the way to go.

i liked the way how the hutt schools used to do it (dont know if they still do) with that wednesday arvo league. alot of the guys i was playing with were playing for hibs and kapiti during the week, then club stuff on the weekends. kapiti schools were also part of it, i think wellington high had weekday teams also.

You've got to get selected first Hampster, maybe turn up to training once before you claim a spot in the team...

You guys have got it pretty much right, 1st XI is fine unless you are a very good player in which case your focus should be on club 1st or 2nd team football imho.
Back to the school banter, I coach Onslow College's 1st XI and we'll have a very young and re-building squad after half of last year's lot left. Will scrap away and try to make Div1 in the grading rounds but might be a quiet year for us.
Tawa have a good side this year. Coll should always win it with the number and quality of players they have but my guess is they might not this season.
Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Well yeah, true, how about, all going to plan I'll be playing Petone U-21s this season...

Coll will win it, only if Shogan is in first XI though.

HIBs will struggle this year with a large number of boys moving on. The McPeake twins missing would be a kick in the groin to any team

Tawa College will be strong, as they have been for the past 7 or 8 years. I pick them to come close this year. Good start at the Hilton Petone. Have beaten Petone and Island Bay 2nd teams. I presume both these teams arent at full strength, but still very encouraging results. But yeah Wgtn Coll should win it based on the players they have to pick from, but would be nice to see Tawa take it out!

Not always the case, i remember a few years ago every team from their 1sts down to 5th or 6th were easy beats. A real off year for Wgtn Coll, was either 02 or 03.

Wellington Coll 1st Xl are never easy beats for other college teams....who cares about their 5th or 6th teams, that's not exactly the depth im talking about here.
Mind you i do remember beating them 14-1 (i think it was that score line) in the Chatham Cup in 2003 or 2004.
Angus unlucky son :)
Anyways i guess i will always be in favour of Tawa College to do well as i used to go there. Weren't that good when i was there in the late 90's, but the lads had some quality years after that. Good to see most of them at Tawa club now.
Think im off topic now, but College football does have its place and that U21 league from what I have seen is a waste of time at the moment.

Yeah that 03 team was weak sauce...
I dont think the U21 is a waste of time, I just think its still very much in its infancy. Too many players give up after school as the transition from college to mens can be difficult for some (for whatever reason).
And also there are actually schools out there that dont even have teams, or if they do they may not be very good or may be poorly organised (I know when I was at Tawa if you werent in the first XI nobody cared about you). Also Bishop Viard College usually had a team but they were always playing in the lowest college grades because they just didnt have the depth out there. In this instance i believe club football (U21) would be the better option. I also couldnt imagine Samuel Marsden out here in Whitby would have enough for a competitive team but theyre big enough that there would definitely be a few players there.
I think over time it will grow to be more successful. And although it may not be as strong as senior footy, it will keep players in the game, and if organised properly could be a good way for clubs to introduce players to senior football.

02 - beaten once by secondary school opposition, 3rd at national tournament
03- 4/10 in fed reserve, 3rd round chatham cup (knocked out by island bay 1-0) 3rd at national tournament
get your facts straight

Yeah you got to remember that Wgtn Coll used to play their 2nd XI in the college grade but that isn't the case anymore. When Wgtn Coll's 1st XI has played in the college grade they have pretty much always finished 1st or 2nd (maybe 3rd but can't remember, definitely never easy beats).
Even Wgtn Coll's 2nd XI used to do pretty good in the college grade and they were never easy beats either.

Ok for some reason i thought Wel Col stopped playing in Fed reserve pre 04. I played fed reserve from 2004 until it was disbanded and never recalled playing well coll... weird.
so it wouldve been there 2nd team that wernt that good. but yeah like someone said, it was forever ago.

neither do you mate. i said U21 would be a good grade to retain players, regardless of skill level (retaining post secondary players is one of the biggest problems for football in NZ at the moment). so to say the Chatham Cup winners would thrash them, it makes little to no sense to me why you would say that as its completely irrelevant to the point i was bringing forward.
i also said it was early days, the competition will expand in the following seasons and if schools could work a little bit better with clubs they should be able to have players sign up the season following the end of school in a good number.

Coll only has 3 maybe 4 this year competitive teams. 1st and 2nd are generally competitive. 3rds was a joke last year as you got plenty of decent 5th formers on the brink of 2nds and then quite a few older no hopes who wanted to play competitive and as it was the lowest competitive team that was the only place to go. They ended up having a ridiculous squad of around 22 or so. This year a few more are playing competitive so I think 4ths will be quite poor but 3rds could be a decent side.

5ths & 6ths will be pretty decent this year. Probably better than 4ths and maybe 3rds. You heard it hear first. Tbh, at coll the lowest competitive side is often worse than most social teams because its full of serious no hopers.

Hamilton Boy's High to finish in the top two at nationals.
When i left, as a teacher we had 27 teams , with most of our better players linked to senior mens football aswell.
They have a good coach in Dave Edmondson aswell so they should be successful again (2nd at Nationals last year)
And no eal competition either, have won title 9 years on the trot. Only comp was couple years ago when Wood played for St Pauls along with a couple other u17 nz reps.
Still won though... every time : )
