Vic Uni has secured double promotion this season, will be one of 2 clubs with teams in the top 2 grades. Congrats to Karori and North Wellington (result pending) for winning Cap Prem and Division 1 respectively.

Gonna be a bloody interesting season next year!

The 5th meeting of Wairarapa United and Wellington United took place tonight at Fraser Park in Lower Hutt

This was the semi final of the Kelly Cup, and while this should probably have been the final as these are the best two teams in Wellington at the moment it gave Wellington United a good run out in preparation for their Kate Shepherd Sup Semi Final against Dunedin Tech on Saturday

Wellington United won 3-0 with goals to Susan Giesen, Dani Ohlsson and a cracking header from Rosie Wild.

Wairarapa did their usual played nice football but they don't create a lot of chances (well against Wellington United they don't, which is in part due the Wellington United defence) and they were without a couple of their regular players tonight

Wellington United are playing well and have some real depth, it's been great seeing players like Lucy Jones come on this year she has really come into her own and was playing the ball around nicely switching it when she had to and played a lovely ball in for Dani Ohlsson to slam in the second goal.

Another great player they currently have is Dutch import Suzanne Giesen, she is real quality and I'd recommend getting down to Newtown Park on Saturday (KO 2pm) to see her play before she heads back to the Netherlands, where she has signed for FC Twente

Don't remind me!

Outstanding free kick by NW to win it, same girl did the exact same thing to us 2 weeks ago to win the league. I don't know her name but she looks to be quite a good player.

As Ollie has already mention her name is Eleanor Humphrey and I’m her very proud Dad. Find below a link to a vid of the goal you mentioned in your post. The one two weeks before was more of a screamer into the top left corner. #MessiJunior

Yup, had a great view from the Uni technical area both times. If she wants to try her hand at W-League feel free to bring her to Uni!

I wish her 1st goal in the final was on video. Fantastic touch, turned the defender first to the outside and then cut inside to create the angle to finish past the keeper. Haha hands off, she is staying at Alex Moore :)

Was a great run and finish for the first goal. Must admit I was pretty disappointed with the defending on it though.

I look forward to playing against her again next year - the final would've been a different story with my top 2 CBs available! Uni holidays really hamstrung us but I can't make the same excuse for the league. NW were great opposition all season, 3 high quality, closely fought games. I think you'll do pretty well in Prems next year.

any whispers from Petone or UH about new appointments for their women coaching appointments , leaving it a bit late as they both need to recruit new blood

VUWAFC is having open women's trials on the 7th of March, 7.30pm at Boyd Wilson - if you know anyone keen to have a crack at W-League or Prems send them down! Preseason training is well underway already though and any players interested are more than welcome.

yes - based on last years finishing positions (and that you can't have more than 1 team per club in the W-League)

after Petone it goes

Kapiti Coast United

BNU

Island Bay

North Wellington....

Is it because there just isn't enough players or because teams horde players and there 2nd teams are just as strong as some weak W-League teams?

Feels like this W-League concept and the no promotion/relegation for those couple of years has failed. So leaves it with 7 teams a month and a half out from season kicking off.

PN Marist; Seatoun; Vic Uni; Wairarapa; Karori; Wellington United and Wests.

players will go where they think the coaching is best. That's why they go to United to play in women's prem. Guess this impacts Kelly cup which is 2 weekends away, or do upper Hutt play their now womans top side?

I don't think its the 2nd team thing - the only club that could really be accused of that is Wellington United (I think Vic is the only other team with a 2nd team in Prems and we had double promotion last year), I think its more a case of a limited player pool.

Will be interesting to see if they pull someone up or go with a 7 team competition. I can see North Wellington being keen to take the spot, their women's team is strong and young and only going to continue to improve.

not sure Rapa's rise hurt UHC too much, there was one player that went last year but she lived in the Wairarapa anyway. It was more Palmy Marist that were effected by them

two seasons ago (when Upper Hutt won the W-League) UHC had a pretty useful looking 2nd team, it was a young team and they were unable to keep it going as most of the girls went to Uni outside of Wellington. Heard a similar thing is happening at North Wellington this season, although they are a big enough club to deal with that so will likely still be competitive

True that is another issue you see each season as well, a lot of younger women/girls play for the top teams and then they finish high school and leave Wellington. Few come back after Uni but not the same compared to what leaves.

regardless of where she lives it is still a person down. How many this year? How many would have come the other way if Rapa hadn't risen?

Smaller player base so it has a bigger impact comparatively. I'd suggest the proportion of women playing high level local football in their teens is likely higher than men as well but don't have the stats to back that up.

Apparently they've been looking for a team to step up to Prems, which would suggest they did.

I have no information beyond that though.

A higher percentage of Males tend to continue playing while at Uni. The girls care to much about results so tend to drop out of football as the study toughens up.

No hard fax but Daughter went to Otago for 5 years -   a lot of the females in comparison to males, dropped their sporting interest to concentrate on study. (The PE course the first year had 200 student. Gave a reasonable balance to make judgment.)  others who played with here in wgtn went to other Universities around the country and majority gave up the football in the first year.

My girl (ex natwomens/central league) dropped football to focus on uni. Played a little socially last year and looking more serious this year, but degree still has to come first.

Second bit. Been happening for years, created the situation which saw non capital teams thrown out of league (marist excepted, they needed the numbers). Price you pay for short term and selfish vision.
