Wish I hadn't agreed to go for a lager with my boss from Aus, otherwise I'd be keen.

Oh yeah, jambo, beware of Greene he never passes.

Capital City Futsal is on their way to Auckland this weekend for the first-ever National Futsal Tournament at the ASB stadium.

For those NZ players (Capital City Futsal has 5 out of the 8 man squad) there is the added incentive to impress as it doubles -up as trials for the NZ squad to represent their country in the OFC Futsal World Cup qualifiers.

Still no host nation has been appointed and the word on the street is that Wellington is going to put in a bid to host the OFC qualifiers next year with the eventual winner earning a direct spot to the World Cup Finals in Brazil.

Wish all the guys well but especially those eligible to represent their country in a FIFA competition.

You heard it first! Wellington and Capital City Futsal are the first National  Futsal Champions! They defeated East City (Red) on penalties after the scores were locked at 1-1

More later! Checked the website www.futsal.co.nz

You've forgotten about the other first ever Futsal Championship held at Newtown a few years ago when the Wellington Indoor Sports Team beat Canterbury in the final.

p.s the goalies need to be a special breed to get in front of a futsal ball from close range and diving on a wood floor, madness!!

Special breed indeed, the number of cuts and almost broken fingers thanks to flying feet. Great fun though - haven't actually played FUTSAL yet, currently play 5-aside at Queens Wharf. Love to play in goal!

As a proper GK myself. I love 5-a-side. Back when I was working in Wellington (instead of being out of town all week as I have been for the last few years), I used to play so many games. As soon as teams find out you're a good keeper, you get asked to play all the time. I used to play 4 or 5 games a night several nights a week. After a while I adopted the use of small cricket pads down the outside of my track pants to protect my sides from diving injuries as I was getting hurt. Knee and elbow pads are also useful.

Taping the finger joints for 5-a-side is a must. The fabric covered ball make gloves redundant, so tape is all you can use.

For Futsal, normal gloves are fine. I use Reusch orthotecs to protect my fingers  from suffering any more breaks (I once had broken digits on both hands at the same time... not good) in both outdoor and futsa. For futsal I use the more durable rubber (street something or other is the model) - especially if at that place in Kilbirnie as the carpet can shred the gloves if you scrape them.

The carpet certainly does put a lot of wear and tear on gloves, and ones knees at the same time... fortunately (and I'm sure CCF will correct me if I'm wrong) most proper fustal is played on the hard court floors, which is why I have quite enjoyed playing in the competition down at the Kilbirnie Rec centre.

I think one of the things though that really suprises me is that most goalies in futsal in fact wear no gloves at all, or at the most a very thin glove with little padding. Supposedly this is to afford them more grip on the ball. For me it looks like a recipe for broken fingers....but they can pull off some amazing saves.

I too played in that futsal tournament at WISC organised by Nick Bailey. I don't think you could really call it the first ever Futsal Championship. You cannot compare the two. Auckland was an official tournament (it was supported by NZ Football) with competitors from the Nth Island. Vikings Futsal (based in the Sth Island) decided to decline the invitation. It was also national trials with the possibility of being selected for a 24 man NZ squad for the OFC qualifiers next year.

just seen that 13 auckland players have been picked for the nz-train on squad and wellington only has 5. does this suggest some sort of bias or is it fair to say that there were some pretty good players in that auckland b team?

There were some good players in that Auckland team yes, but the key reason there are only 5 Wellington players is the quantity of players.

Due to travel costs Wellington sent 8 players, 5 made the team, 2 weren't eligible as they aren't resident/citizen's and the other player in the Wellington team is also the manager of the team who is heavily involved in the behind the scenes stuff with New Zealand futsal...so quite a good Wellington representation.

In comparison the 2 Auckland teams from the club had well 20 players or more at the tournament.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the New Zealand team (12 players I think) is picked after the coach has been found.

No. In my opinion the Auckland players made the 24 squad due to experience of competing in the last OFC qualifiers in 2004 (in Canberra). They are by no means a technically skilled outfit but what they do have is an understanding of the game and have spent many hours training in the tactical side of the game. Maybe they could spend an extra hour or two each day improving their technical skills to give them that extra edge which is pretty good advice for us all really!
