GOOD coaches.

Was having a chat to someone yesterday and he made a very good point.

In Wellington, coaches seem to love to hate each other.  In fact, everyone seems to hate any coaches who aren't their favourites.

So I thought I'd have a go at this.  Here are my opinions of who is GOOD in Wellington coaching, and why.

Please feel free to disagree, but remember this thread is about who you like, not who you don't like.

Andy Hedge: excellent.  Technically good.  Can teach and relates well to kids.  Tactically very astute and understands the game.  Currently working enormous hours trying to establish himself as DOF at Capital Football.  I think he'll be brilliant.

Stu Jacobs: a tremendous man manager.  Great with players.  Puts on a fantastic session that players enjoy.  Not afraid to demand hard work from his players, which has gone out of fashion a bit in coaching in NZ at the moment.  Has an impeccable record with senior teams at national level.  Was also a very good player.

Gary Jenkins: I've known Jenkins since he moved to Wellington, when he was a dead set weirdo, and he has become extremely good.  Puts on very good sessions and gets frustrated with people - players and staff alike - who don't step up to his level of professionalism.  A tidy player in his day from what I've heard although he's a hundred years older than me so I couldn't vouch for that myself.  Has a bit of a problem with his public image at times that baffles me because he's a great guy outside of football too.

Shaun Gill: I've hardly seen anything of him but have seen a couple of his sessions and he seems to be organised, enthusiastic, intelligent and committed to his coaching.  Could be one for the future which is great because, as you'll see, there aren't a lot of young coaches coming through.

Ricki Herbert: probably the best coach in the country today.  Is completing his UEFA Pro License which will also make him, I think, New Zealand's most qualified coach ever.  Has burned a few bridges in the past but I guess when you're in a national job for that long you're going to do that.  Has done well with both the All Whites and the Phoenix.

Tom Randles: it's hard to argue with someone who is a nice guy AND who played premiership football.  Injuries have all but crippled him but Tom is a lovely fella and has a tremendous approach with young players.  A fierce proponent of ball mastery before anything else you won't find many of his sessions where everyone doesn't have a ball at their feet.  Also one of the game's true gentlemen.

Brendan McIntyre: is loved and loathed in equal measures.  I remember the fiery, mental, Brendan McIntyre that it was very very very hard to like but he seems to have mellowed these days.  Even back then he still had something to offer and now, with a revamped sideline style, he's only gotten better.  Is well organised and enthusiastic and a fierce supporter of his players.  Has that Keegan-esque ability to make his players feel ten feet tall.  Is also a bit "out of the box" as a coach - having a different approach to those brought up in the Capital Football mould.  Which I think isn't a bad thing.

That's about it of them that I know well enough to comment on.  Others that people might like to say a word about include: Matt Calcott (I've never seen him coach but everyone tells me he's very good), Jose Quijada, Guy Smith (he's a clown), and there are probably plenty of others I haven't thought of.

a really interesting read Smithy

My knowledge of local coaches is very limited, but I've got plenty of time for Mike Gaeta as a coach of  youngsters at Island Bay:  a former first team coach, he's brilliant with the young uns. He's positive, motivating and teaches excellent habits and attitudes; bloody nice guy too.

Great idea for a thread that looks at the positive!

Kevin Thompson - very lanky, and can balance a bottle of Heineken on his head, which every good coach needs to be able to do.

You try and start a serious thread and some unemployed Yorshire-based troll comes along and gets all silly on it with his premeditated wackiness.

Can't argue with Thommo's results mind you.

Yes, although not Miramar any more.  Graham Little is taking the Mar this season.

What? This dude:

Sorry Smithy, couldn't resist it.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Rather than names of coaches I was more looking for what you think is good about them.

However responses to this thread so far (including moderated ones) do tend to illustrate the point don't they?  We do love to knock people who are trying to put back into the game.

It's real easy to sit on the sidelines and do f**k all but take the piss I guess.

One of the best coaches i ever had was an old scotsman he was a grumpy old barsteward and it used to piss us all off running up the bloody steps at nairnville park,he had us going up backwards sideways any friggen way the old sh*t.Then it was FN ages with ball at the feet and laps if he caught you using your natural foot.Wasnt till some time later that i realised the grounding that he gave us was just the best.

No cant remember his name as it was that bloody long ago.He wasnt what you could call a people person but he knew his bloody stuff and certainly kept us in line. For an old guy he had an uncanny knack of finding your shins if you tried to go past him a 2nd time.Hence we all learnt to get rid of the ball early.

Talking of Scotsman and ancient history Ballane,

I've got huge respect for Billy Finlayson who was player coach at Whakatane town in 1973/4 (and probably after that, but we moved)

he let me and my mate (Paul Revington) train with the first team when i was 13, always encouraged us even if we were spotty little Herberts with way too much enthusiasm and getting under foot all the time

thanks Billy!! (Oi Oi Edgecumbe said you are still going strong)

Bobby Wallace RIP.  Great coach in his day and well respected.  Bit of a fitness fanatic and taught you alot about the game (if you could understand his acsent). His love of football was infectious

Doug Moore
Pure quality and class.
Coached Championship winners in Singapore and had the best quotes ever.
He would tell players to time ur run late...and as always cum with a rush!!!
Once told the management team that he knew more they they ever will...gotta love it.
He would put on training sessions that he used from  FC Barcelona training sessions he attended...certainly beats the modern day SAQs .
