How many cards were there for the Rapa game News? Some of the challenges I saw coming from Fiji In Disguise were rather uncomfortable.

From www.Olympicafc.org.nz

Todays Semi-Final clash with Wellington United ended in heartbreak for the Boys in blue.

Both team's looked egar to reach the Finals as the first 10 minutes saw possesion go both ways although, it was United who put their names on the scoresheet first. After a corner was well sent into the keepers side netting, helped in by a diving Shaun O'Neill. Olympic gained a bit of shape after the goal, replying with a couple chances, but no real threat to United solid backline. It was hard for Olympic to get started, in a game, which was never really theirs. Even though Olymic enjoyed some time on the ball it was United who went into the break 1-0 up.

The second half was no better as Olympic struggled to find their shape, and United taking full advatage of this caught Olympic out at the back, and after a disasterous spell of play from the boys, Olympic edged their Newtown Park rivals a step closer to the Final by netting an Own Goal. United looked like the victors in this match ever since kickoff, as Olymic never really sent much threat into their box and back line. One moment of hope came when Mickey Milovic Misheadered a ball straight into the keepers hands.

This seemed to sum up Olympics day, and to make matters even worse, Olympic were cuaght out once again on the break, and United put there foot in the door, tapping in another goal to seal the victory and a well earned spot in the Final.

At the end of the day Olympic's chances went begging as they never really had their foot on the pedal, and their lacklustered performance gave the club and their fans something to think about on the ride home, and can accept being beaten by a better United side.

Although Olympic lost the game, the boys held their heads high in defeat and can now look to improve on their preformance, by getting stuck in and showing us some more gritty determination and goals that saw them reach this years SemiFinals. We can now look foward to the new season kicking off near the end of this Month against Western Suburbs away from home.

Olympic would like to thank all the supporters, players and Club members and associates for making this years Hilton Petone Cup a fun, exciting and enjoyable time. And as the saying goes...Theres always next year.

fiji did look good, but only because wharfies tried to play to much football, got caught on the counter. they made the mistake of droping off the 2 main fiji players. good to see the garden knome working hard in the midfield tho.

dont thing fiji will win the prem league tho, they didnt look any better than last year and they got no where then

You mean like a ponytail?

The Fijian I saw play for Island Bay, did play over the hill last season (he was the smallest one)but he's not in the same league as the current players, average skill and lazy, I'd be surprized if he plays the majority of season in IB first team

news bit off topic but how did your game end up???

we played 4x20 and ended up losing 5-3 to kapiti,  they scored three in the first 20 lol while we were still asleep two coming from keeper error too, was actually a really good game I think our coach was pleased with how we played for our first game together, still got the lads from pool to come too...

Drew 1-1, probably had the best of the match as well which is something you couldn't have said much last season.  Had about 8 out including our 'strike' force, so while we had some stand ins like Junior Brown and co. it felt okay.

Uncle Steve, great write up. I'm looking forward to more of that standard as the season progresses.  Great to see you being so gracious and no mention of the ref . Keep it it up.

Would like to think we have improved from second to last bit harsh to judge us on a loss in a pre season hit out dont ya think?. Gary Hewson has replaced him, former first team player.

We interrupt regular discussion for a shameless plug for Davis Trading - sponsors of this year's Hilton Petone.  The Fever supports them what support local football so big ups to Davis Trading.

back to regular discussion for the moment, the article 'Thumping Heart of Kiwi Football' has followed the established pattern in this forum of writing off the chances of Welly U. Having beaten 3 CL teams so far in the run to the final, and Fiji having lost comprehensively in their group game to Olympic (a team that Welly U beat 3 zip in the semi) I would have thought Welly U would get a bit more support. Talking to the Olympic fellas, Fiji are a good team but were easily broken down by astute tactics on the day. LH and Warfies obviously failed to appreciate the need to deny Fiji space, however Welly U won't be falling into this trap. We hope.

Think you're on the defensive a bit there Rightstr.  What Park Life says is that Wellington United are central league strugglers.  Last year you finished 4th from bottom (a full 10 points behind 5th-to-bottom Gisborne) with a goal diff of -16 and managing only 5 wins out of your 18 matches.  So Parky's description of you isn't entirely unwarranted.

That's not to deny your success so far this season however where you've been the dark horse in the Hilton Petone and accounted for Miramar, Petone and Olympic.

To allow readers to draw their own conclusions your results have been:

1-1 with Stokes Valley
1-0 over Island Bay
1-0 over Petone
2-1 over Miramar (see previous discussion) and
3-0 over Olympic.

i agree that welly u should be given a bit more credit. they have defended well and put away the majority of there few chances in the games i have seen. however please dont take the fiji LH game into consideration as LH were dominating the 1st 25mins and were 1 nil up untill i left the field, rodney(our center back)went into goal and our center mid went into center back.thats when the 2 main fijians gained alot of there space.

good luck to welly u against fiji. they arnt that good if you close down rabo and pedro

Thanks radioman. And there is othing wrong with talking up my team, that's totally different from being defensive. The writer of the article has thrown in an offhand comment based on last year's CL results rather than conducting any sort of analysis on who and how WU  have beaten this year. That is something I can't let slide hence my post.

No worries mate

at the moment early days but things are looking positive. Lost alot of players from last year but seems to be a good group of first years who have just moved down. Uni holidays could prove a problem as always though.
