Woh, what horrible conditions yesterday! We played Tauranga City over there, and the ground was ok, but the conditions!!! We started off, wet and freezing gale blowing, after 15 min the ref sensibly called it off for player safety. Well done to him, even though the home team wanted to play on. The linesman, who had dropped his flag twice because his hands were numb, called the ref over and adivesed that he could see players in distress.
I was still cold an hour later. A scary thought that we might have continued to play.
Well done to all refs who made the sensible decision!

Other than pitches being unplayable  - it is probably what we've discussed most at RA meetings in regards to abandoning matches.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

you might have stayed warmer OOE if you'd consumed closer to the YF weekly pie average over that last few years

sort of a trade off between fit, fast and freezing

and wide, weighty and warm(er)

I once had the misfortune to play in a Cup tie in Scotland, played in freezing wind and sleet, which was abandoned after 37 minutes cos it was so cold that two of our players were dangerously close to getting hypothermia. Not a pleasant experience.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I played in a local league match in Wairarapa three years ago when a player collapsed with hypothermia, had to be rushed to hospital. Ref wanted to play on even after that.

Hypothermia around local winter sports is much more common than you might think. I was at a hospital's A&E the weekend before last. The usual saturday afternoon sports injured were being carried in. I asked one of the medics if they saw much hypothermia and she said that yes they do.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Thats a bit harsh Sloth, i was at the Melville v Bay Olympic game on Saturday and was marvelled by a  fine performance from melville and probably one of the worst i have ever seen from a premier league ref .... fat controllor2008-07-28 19:42:46

Talking refs, Peter O'Leary was at the Mount and he called the premier game (TCU v Central) off before the players got changed. It was us lower league players that were the guinea pigs, so to speak. Oi Oi Edgecumbe2008-07-28 21:48:35

How come we never see the refs wearing long sleave thermals or warm gear ie beanies, fingerless gloves etc.
I think they should be looking after themselves better.

Frowned upon big time! Be alright if refs wore long sleeved shirts but they're pretty rare these days. Just have to freeze.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Our ref on argued that point on Saturday.... he told all of our players to take off their thermals unless they matched the playing strip. When one of our players wanted to keep his on the ref just said that you dont see him wearing thermals.

Ah, the delicate balance of following the letter of the Law against being practical

Well it wasn't that cold , I just thought our player needed to harden up....

Of course its easy to say that when one can hide a thermal top under a goalkeeping jersey

Most their brains are frozen in the first place so I guess thats why they would choose for the rest of their body to also freeze.
