Karori Under19's (Alleged) Payment

Ive got word from a pretty reliable source Karori has found money to pay/offer a wellington college 2nd x1 player by the name of sam palmer to play under 19's for them... (who would want to play in satelite anyway?)

any confirmation of this from anyone?

does this happen anywhere else? i would hope not, should be encouraging young players to be dedicated to their clubs at that age not shopping around for who can buy you the after match

fiction. Believe me I should know.

Maybe your "reliable" source is getting mixed up with the Karori coaching academy - where mostly college and Uni students do work for our junior club. I believe Sam took part this year, along with Kayle Herbert and about 30 others.

But anyway, people have been getting paid to play U19s for years.  This isn't new

Karori Club has developed a very successful coaches academy which allows high school and university students to earn an extra few dollars as a way of encouraging young people to become involved in coaching. Sam Palmer is one of these people, and so are a number of other people (30+ involved). Most who are not playing 1st or 2nd XI at any school or club.

It is exactly the same as any other coaching businesses, for example Fast Feet, who pay their employees. Apart from the Karori Coaches Academy is linked with a club. May be BBT you should get all of you facts right before claiming you have a reliable source.

You will probably be aware that Sam Palmer played in the Karori U19 team last year, so why are you saying that we are not focused on encouraging our own young players?

Haven't been in the past perhaps.  Focussed more on drinking than developing.  But credit to the club they are making massive strides towards changing that.  The people I know who are involved are dedicated club people who have a vision to take the Wharf back to its glory days and are moving in that direction faster than many expected.

Thanks Smithy,

I feel that all should be aware that Karori has a large junior base that is often lost when the players leave for college. By having a coaches academy, Karori is encouraging a large number of players/coaches to come back to the club when they are still at high school. There is a huge range of jobs that vary from data entry to gear cleaning to coaching JPL teams. High school kids are interested in this it allows them to have a job that they enjoy (who doesn't love football) rather than working part time at Maccas on the weekend shift.

I believe that what Karori are doing now, will help retain the quality players that are developed in the Junior club.

This might be a good opportunity to get my number of posts up

And is a vastly better approach than the "wah, it's the colleges' fault" that most Wellington clubs take.

a few of the keen college guys  have had the opportunity to play senior football this year. Some of them are nearly as quick as me.

I don't know yet if they have mastered your famous Cruyff yet. Maybe we should se you up Feverish as a mentor (drinking and playing) for Karori U19s... thoughts?

Karori are certainly looking at paying players to play for them. Several guys i know have been approached including myself. What they are doing isn't poaching players, they are just trying to build a strong base around which younger junior players will want to be involved with.

You need to realise Lewis that it isn't a payment, more an opportunity.

Had u on your knees after pre season fitness races, having said that lack of skill held me back.

Only the physio and the coach and possibly his gf were paid last season for K-U19s. The rest of us didnt deserve it. Dave572008-07-03 23:01:00

Dum topic first of all.
Yes clubs do pay for a few players to play however they are usually they top clubs competing in the main napier tournament not satelite. We paid a for an ausy to come a few years back and he got top goal scorer so its not unheard of.
However what the hell why would karori pay for a 2nd 11 coll player haha thats a joke. There 1st 11s pretty poor I cant imagine what there 2nd teams like.
