Got down with the kids to watch Miramar v Phoenix Reserves this afternoon.
Pretty enjoyable game in the sun, even if the scoreline ended up a bit one-sided. Finished 4-0 to the Phoenix, but it wasn't that sort of game for a long time.
It was 0-0 at halftime and I thought Miramar did well. They didn't just sit back and defend, they actually tried to play and had a few decent spells. Considering the quality the Phoenix had out there, I thought they gave a very good account of themselves.
The difference in the second half was probably fitness and quality. Once the Phoenix got the first goal they looked pretty comfortable. A couple of nicely taken goals and some tired Miramar legs saw it end 4-0.
Phoenix had some sharp players. Bangalan and Eglinton were both very good, Candy looked classy on the ball, and Brazendale's pace caused problems. I also noticed Bev Priestman behind the goal when we went to grab some halftime drinks, guessing she was having a look at the next crop and there's no shortage to choose from. Women's side of things at the Phoebix look to be in a very good spot.
As for Miramar, they looked a lot better than the side I saw get steamrolled a couple of times last year. They competed well and never really stopped working. Number 18, Green, was probably the standout for me and looked dangerous whenever she got on the ball. At Ht I spoke with one of the Miramar player's parents and they said they've got new coaches this season and they are encouraging the team to play a bit more freely and enjoy it. Early days, but they seem to be heading in the right direction, which is good for the league.
Overall, a nice way to spend an afternoon. Good crowd there, plenty of support from both teams, and I spotted a Yellow Fever banner in the stands too - good work!
