Three games in the preliminary round suggests there are 27 teams entered, and the 8 NRFL sides to get a bye to R2.  If it really is 26 teams and 7 NRFL sides then it should've been 1 preliminary round game.   I guess we'll find out when the draw for R1 is made.

Is it sexist if someone posts Chatham Cup draw and not the KS Cup draw :-).  Fortunately it copies and pastes from the NZF article pretty well with minimal effort ...

Delivereasy Kate Sheppard Cup - Round One:

Northern & WaiBop:

Home | Away
Bay Olympic FC | East Coast Bays A.F.C
Hibiscus Coast AFC | Onehunga Māngere United AFC
Uni-Mount Bohemian AFC | Cambridge Football
Lakes Football Club | Onehunga Sports
Waitemata Football Club | Birkenhead United AFC
Waikato Unicol AFC | Thames Football Club
West Hamilton United | Hamilton Wanderers

Central:

Home | Away
Palmerston North Marist Football Club | Palmerston North United FC

Capital:

Home | Away
North Wellington FC | Te Kotahitanga FC
Wairarapa United Football | Wellington United AFC

Mainland:

Home | Away
Nelson Suburbs FC | Golden Bay Association Football Club
Waimak United Football Club | Halswell United AFC
Cashmere Technical Football Club | Coastal Spirit FC
Ferrymead Bays | Universities of Canterbury AFC (UCAFC)

Southern:

Home | Away
Roslyn Wakari AFC | Otago University AFC
Dunedin City Royals FC | Green Island AFC

The following Delivereasy Kate Sheppard Cup teams have been allocated byes for Round One:

Northern & WaiBop:
Auckland United Football Club
Eastern Suburbs AFC
Ellerslie AFC
Fencibles United AFC
West Coast Rangers FC
Western Springs AFC
FC Tauranga Moana
Franklin United F C
Northern Rovers FC

Central:
N/A

Capital:
Miramar Rangers
Petone Football Club
Victoria University of Wellington Association Football Club Inc
Waterside Karori
Wellington Phoenix  Football Club

Mainland:
N/A

Southern:
Dunedin City Royals FC
Otago University AFC
Roslyn Wakari AFC
Green Island AFC
Typical range of errors from NZF
1. Southern sides listed as having games and also in byes.  Should be byes so that next round has 2 mainland and 2 southern games.
2. Two Northern Conferences sides being drawn to have byes because wrong number of preliminary games played.

Poor of the likes of Melville, Taradale not to entry.  Personally I think it should be condition of entry of playing in the top 3/top 4 steps of the pyramid to play in Chatham/KS Cup.   Maybe next year with National League in place, there can be revamp as it will probably be case of finding 20/22 teams to join National League sides in Round of 32.

I don't know about Taradale but Melville I've been told have an average age of 16.6 for their starting 11, so maybe they just aren't prepared for potential cross country travel in the later rounds due to school?

I wonder if they read my comment alluding to that in this thread a week ago.  I wonder if they will also admit to two Northern conference sides having a bye being an error to correct earlier mistake as well.

A few years ago NZF put out a neat graphic showing the progression.  They should dig it out again (although it has changed slightly as Tasman/Mainland now gets merged one round earlier) as that would help prevent such errors.

They must be listening :-) , todays Facebook and Instagram resurrected the Road to the Finals chart that shows the progression.  Next step is to show the Northern/Central/Southern league sides entering at R2 or R1 and putting number of teams in each square

Side note but do ACFC and Olympic not have women's teams? Can't find them anywhere and it feels weird for such big clubs to not have senior women's teams

Auckland City don't have any teams outside their first team and the U23s (might be a couple younger). They're basically Central United in a hat.

Don't know of an Olympic team, but it's unfortunately not that weird. Women's game is still growing and with a lack of depth there seems to be less clubs overall.

Could be working in partnership with somebody else, which isn't uncommon. I think Chch Utd partner with Halswell for example and there's a couple women's merged sides like Tauranga Moana and NW United.

Mens football and womens football space is very different in Wellington. None of the top clubs in one is a top club in the other. Even if you look who is in the leagues, only Karori, Phoenix, Miramar and Petone are in both mens and womens CL.

Regarding Olympic - probably not a high focus, plus a lot of the players in the area would be with Wellington United just down the road, who are the opposite situation.

Dramatic start to Round 2 at a chilly Newtown Park: 1-1 at FT between Wellington United and the Nix, 2-2 AET, then the Nix won it 6-5 on penalties thanks to two great saves from Brooke Neary.

It was a good crowd for a Friday night - I got to say hi to Bev at halftime, and there was a lively contingent from (I think) our U18s to help balance out the vocal United support.

Quite the upset actually. United have more than twice the Nix's points in the WCL so the academy should be very pleased with themselves today

Even before it got to penalties it felt like the game could’ve gone either way. United came back twice from behind and there were some near misses that had everyone holding their breath, so the players certainly did their club proud.

One weird anomaly I’ve never understood is that it’s our U18s who play in the WCL, with the Reserves (U20s effectively) playing in the U15 Mixed Capital Development League and the KSC until nationals kick in. There’s a bit of player mobility in both directions though, and we had a few U18 regulars in tonight’s squad even though it was mostly the Ressies.

not really - it was the cup so it was the Phoenix Reserve team, not the U18 team that plays in the WCL (although they did have a couple of U18 players in the team)

And Bangalan (and Neary) from the 1st team as well. These two, plus Lily Brazendale and Alyssha Eglinton are just back from their New Zealand U20 games against Auzzie, so yes a very different team to the WCL team.

You and the whole league - whether they should be allowed in the Kate Sheppard Cup remains contentious - are NZF going to allow Auckland FC to enter as well when they have a women's team? Part of the reason the Central League Region has bugger all entries in the Cup nowadays it seems.
2026 = 11 teams
2025 = 13 teams
2024 = 15 teams (first year Nix were allowed in / teams not told until late in the piece)
2023 = 16 teams

Not great for such a prestigious cup and a growing sport.
I imagine allowing Auckland FC in will have a similar chilling effect on entries from the Auckland/Waikato Region teams as well.

Wasn't how I saw the game tbh - the Nix were very dominant first half and let WU back into it second half, then were the better team again in extra time but let WU in again!

Wasn't how I saw the game tbh - the Nix were very dominant first half and let WU back into it second half, then were the better team again in extra time but let WU in again!
Not that it matters, but WU scored first in Extra Time and then the Nix equalised.
What did matter, is that both the Phoenix Goals should not have stood (the first should have been an offside call and the second was an obvious foul on the keeper). If the referees would have had mics that would have helped.
