AUCKLAND An injury-time equaliser for Mainland Pride in a 2-2 draw with Capital Football booked a place in semi-finals of the Lion Foundation Womens Football League on Sunday, while the New Zealand U-17s were just inches away from joining them after a losing a five-goal thriller to defending champions Auckland Football.
Needing to avoid a home defeat to the Southern Conference leaders in the penultimate round of group play to clinch a playoff spot and avoid a southern showdown against Football South, Mainland twice came from behind to secure a share of the spoils.
Georgia Goulding found the first equaliser on the stroke of halftime, finishing from a tight angle to cancel out Yumi Nguyens 11th minute opener for the visitors.
Capitals Renee Leota continued her fine scoring form with her sixth goal in four games bettered only by Aucklands Kirtsy Yallop with eight this season seven minutes after the restart and could have sealed the win in the 88th minute but for a fine save from Megan Shea to turn the Football Ferns striker shot round the upright.
Seizing on that lifeline, Aimee Phillips netted from close range in the fourth minute of time and earn Mainland second place in the conference and a semi final away to Auckland in a fortnights time.
With a healthy goal difference and a perfect record, Aucklands position at the top of the Northern Conference was never in serious doubt, but their aura of invincibility may now be pierced by a New Zealand U-17 side unlucky not to take more from their see-sawing encounter on North Harbour Stadiums artificial turf.
Football Ferns fullback Anna Green opened the scoring direct from a ninth minute corner and bookended that with a stunning 35 yard winner in the 78th minute as the five-time champions finally got themselves in front for good.
Earlier an under-hit back-pass and pressure from Brittany Dudley-Smith forced Auckland keeper Ashleigh Cox into cannoning her clearance off the Young Ferns striker for a 34th minute equaliser although Rebecca Teggs powerful header putting her level with Renee Leota on six goals put the Aucklanders ahead at the break.
New Zealands Kate Loye made Cox pay for a poor clearance just minutes into the second half with a clinical finish that restored parity on the scoresheet, and even after Greens go-ahead goal only the crossbar prevented Katie Bowens late long-range strike from claiming a deserved point for the Young Football Ferns.
Auckland take a week off before hosting Mainland at the start of the playoffs on December 13, while only a lopsided defeat away to Waikato-BOP next Sunday will prevent the New Zealand U-17s from lining up against Capital in Wellington in the other semi-final.

Standouts for me were Amanda Rasch- very realiable and confident centre back for someone so young, Clansey and Leota both had good games but Emily McColl was a class apart

Lion Foundation Women's League: Auckland, Capital set for Womens League final rematch
December 13, 2009
AUCKLAND The final of the Lion Foundation Womens Football League will be a re-run of the last four editions with Auckland Football facing Capital Football after respective semi final wins on Sunday.
Defending champions Auckland ground out a 4-2 win over a spirited Mainland Pride, while after a goal less first half in their own semi, 2004 champions Capital Football found their scoring touch to run out 4-1 winners over Waikato-Bay of Plenty.
In a playoff for fifth place, the New Zealand U-17 side pulled away from their Football South opposition at North Harbour Stadium, coming from a goal down to eventually win 8-3 with Hannah Wong bagging four goals.
At Growers Stadium in Pukekohe, Auckland weathered an early onslaught but took the lead through Rebecca Tegg, who hooked a speculative shot from the corner of the penalty area over Noran Abaza in the Mainland goal.
Anna Green made it 2-0 after a goalmouth scramble midway through the first half, and then 3-0 with a deft finish when clear though on goal nine minutes into the second half before Sara Clapham reduced the deficit with a pin-point left foot shot into the top corner following good work from substitute Ashleigh Ward.
Rebecca Tegg nodded a perfectly-flighted Kirsty Yallop free kick past Abaza for Aucklands fourth, and while Mainlands Ella Wiebe made it 4-2 with two minutes to go, and Ward forced a sharp save from Victoria Esson in injury time, the Pride couldnt force the five time champions into extra time.
In Petone a lifeless match at Memorial Park transformed itself into a goal fest after the halftime break with Capitals Renee Leota breaking the deadlock two minutes in, and Yumi Ngyuen doubling the lead nine minutes later.
Sarah McLaughlin brought Waikato Bay of Plenty back into the game in sensational style, scoring from a wide angle 35 metres out but Terri-Amber Carlson and Hannah Wall netted within four minutes to take the game away from the visitors and set up a rematch between the only two teams to have won the National Womens League.
The final will be played at Growers Stadium in Pukekohe next Sunday at 1pm.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.
