Was chatting to a couple of parents at a Cricket Tournament this week, their 10 yr olds play for Ohoka rugby Club and their subs are $45 for the season, this includes 2 trainings a week, a game on Saturday, a gear bag, and hoodie. Shirts are supplied but need to be handed back. They need to supply socks and shorts.
One of the dad's is a coach and last year he had to attend 3 coaching courses and 1 referees course before he could be accepted as a coach.
My 10 yr old subs at Waimak are $365 and we have to buy all the kit on top of that.
Hurunui Rangers might have a cheaper option. Alternatively take up rugby.
I'm in a position where I can afford the subs, but I suspect plenty wont be, I would imagine Waimak will take a hit in playing numbers this season if what I hear among the local areas is accurate.
Most people on this forum seem in favour of these increased subs or at least unfazed, but I imagine the masses who don't read the forums will have a different view.
As a sport I think NZ Football is general is in dangerous place, Nix going poorly, NZF taking mis-step after mis-step, crowds are down at the Nix, and in the NZF Premiership (Nelson apart) and now hugely inflated subs.
I'm not a fan of the new structure, as living, working and playing on the East I know many that would not be able to afford a $800/$900 sub.
The thing that gets me, is that clubs are using the "FTC was charging this so we will do the same" reason for charging these fees. When all along, clubs would have a coach that would run two training sessions and the game on the weekend. What has suddenly become all the more expensive? 15 players paying nearly $1000 each either means heaps going to the coach or the club. I know if you break it down to a per session basis it is a small amount however can anyone tell me what the difference is from this year to last year?
Nomads have put the cost out there.
