Reference: College vs Club Football issues in Canterbury
I think Capital Football in Wellington solved this issue a few years ago for Youth Football when they decided to play their U17 Competition on Sunday mornings. In 2013 Capital Football had two U17 Divisions with 10 teams in each division. A couple of clubs had two teams entered - one in each Division. As far as I could determine, the standard of football was not a lot different between most of the teams in the two U17 Divisions. The U17 Teams played 2 x 45m halves and had 18 games over the season so plenty of football. Also, with the number of Artificial Pitches now available in Wellington Region - no weather cancellations!
In the Wellington Region, due to an "agreement" between Capital Football and College Sport Wellington, boys must play for their Club up to the 14th Grade, then for their College for subsequent years. I understand that this used to be a big problem for clubs until the U17 Grade Competition (played on Sunday's) and run by Capital Football was established.
Wellington College is the only College in Wellington Region with Teams playing in the Capital Football Junior Competition on Saturdays. Wellington College is able to do this as it is registered as a Club and field's it own teams in the 13th and 14th Grade Competitions.
This year, the U17 Competition worked out great for our 15 year old son (aged 14 at beginning of year). On Saturday morning's he played for his College Team (in the College Sport U15 Premier Division) and on Sunday morning's he played U17's for his Club.
Whilst that works in that situation it would then cause an issue for parents that support their children on a Saturday and then play themselves on a Sunday, either Women's league or Sunday League...
At the end of the day there is always going to be a clash somewhere along the lines.... but why can't schools play during school time? i.e. during the week!

A few years ago there was talk of a friday night lights comp for the schools - mainland even offering ASB as the venue! Perfect right? The problem? 1 or 2 Clubs threw the toys as it was too close to their club games.
If both sides stopped pushing their own barrow and actually worked together for the best solution there'd be no issues.
In my mind all MPL/PDL/WMPL should be on a sunday - get the rest of the club/community down to watch the best of the best. Yes there is sunday league and womens but those are tiny numbers compared to what gets played on a saturday. This would also remove the club vs school junior debate to a degree due to mainlands dual rego.
That seems to be the problem.... No-one works together to create an opportunity that suits most! (Never going to please all....)
Yer I like that idea. Weeknight competition for schools, juniors and other senior mens on Satdy. Women on Sunday morning, Premier Women and PDL on Sunday lunchtime, Premier League at 2:45pm.
Easy.

Exactly!
I personally thought the friday night comp for schools had a lot of merit to it but I know Christs werent in favour of it due to the school's saturday sport policy.

Agreed, like the Sunday WMPL and MPL, have suggested this before. There should be no school games on Saturday with 1st Xl's playing Friday night and all other teams on WEDNESDAY ffs. The suggested Friday night comp was scuppered by the secondary schools, NOT the clubs as the clubs didn't have any input into it but on the whole supported it. Christs College and the like have a huge influence on football in this city, why? They are a rugby school, that's why, they use the Saturday sport rule to keep football divided and rugby in the ascendancy. Schools need to get over it and themselves and stop trying to take rugby on at that level ffs. It is not about football being on the same footing as rugby in schools!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This issue pisses me off more than any other in local football and badly needs sorting. The schools refuse to budge. Schools exist to educate, clubs exist for the game. Hitch Stop kidding ourselves about the relevance of schools to football, a handful are interested in the status of themselves and their precious first Xl's while the rest of us (including the players) suffer from the naivety and selfishness of that attitude. I actually believe schools would perform better on the national stage if they stepped back from their head in the sand stance. 50 years on and nothing has changed and yet Cashmere can take a club side to Napier and make the final, where did the schools end up this year?

Agree 100%. Further,if schools and clubs were treated equal then there would be no need for dual rego as players would make a choice which club or school they wished to play for. At moment we have bizarre situation where fifa rules are disregarded just because it doesn't suit some. Knock dual rego on the head and make them choose. Dual rego for club/club is not an option and neither should it be, so why should school/club???
I think you're on a different page to everyone else 10cc.
Everyone else is talking about structuring the two competitions so kids can do both and don't have to choose.
Wellington in a similar boat to Christchurch. Capital Football have proposed midweek games to College Sport Wellington, and even dangled the carrot of greater access to referees and a bit of promotion (big school games get a bit of a crowd sometimes). But College Sport are wedded to Saturday morning and won't budge.
College Sport Wellington prefer a structure similar to rugby, where clubs simply stop at 13 and pick up again once a player has finished high school.
Wellington Rugby provide a list of "special" players who are exempted from school competition and elevated to the club senior competition. That list is a handful of players every year in rugby. In football it would be dozens. It would also be controversial as f*ck!

Nope - same one as you guys; issue is only there if schools pretend to be bona fide clubs by wanting to play on saturdays AND the players then also want to play Senior football in the afternoon. Mid week competition for schools takes the whole issue off the table.
Not at all familiar with Wellington, but if any "club" was to only offer football from 13-18, then I'd say they would be doomed for failure. It seems to all stem back to why players would "choose" to play for their school.

When is something going to be done about these stupid Non competitive 10th and 11th grades. Bring back the divisions.
Any one who has kept a record of their club's results will have seen what a mess they are.
Some zonally based recreational groupings are worse than the city wide draw for travel commitments.
Whole of Football says grading should begin at age 8 or 9 placing like with like and against like.
Football is a competitive game, the better the competition the better the development.
Results from Nelson were an embarrassment based on the numbers we select from.

You're not gunna like 2014s 12th grade then matey....
Problem is too many of our junior clubs are prepared to be led by the nose. Where else in NZ is it non competitive?
It is about time the clubs and coaches stood up and told Mainland's administrators what they think.
All the countries researched for the WOF plan still have competitive football at this age, so what is their logic.
Those who attend trials at 11's and 12's will know that we do not have the numbers to offer our best players good competition unless they are in a maximum of 8 teams.
Quality competition for places and between teams creates development.
The top players in Academies across the globe play competitively weekly, some twice weekly.
No matter what sport COMPETITION is an important component to get to the top.
Most of the top achievers play their sport competitively from a very young age.
Already hearing quite a bit of manoeuvring around boys teams for Auckland u17 club tournament; expect player movement both ways between cashmere and coastal. Seems Halswell and fc20 are sticking up their knitting. Anyone else going?

Sorry Ronaldoknow. My poor sentence construction. I understand both Halswell and FC intend sending teams. When I said sticking to their knitting I meant that they were developing their own club players and not trying to get a galactico team together.
Certainly aware of Coastal approaching players via their Canterbury coach. Nothing new there. My understanding is that, as per last year, CTFC will be looking to their own. That includes players that played for them in the last two Nike Cups, some of whom may have played for school since. Both FC and Halswell took guests last year, No problem with that. Both did well. It looks like it is a tournament worth supporting and most important gets our players on the park against the Northern Hordes.
Question is will any of them get identified and will we get some one into NZ squads. The current situation is a travesty.
So much for the "no poaching by rep coaches" rule then. I've never thought switching to play in one tournament is a good reason to change clubs; got to look at the whole development pathway and coaching a club offers.
As to boys national U17 squad selection the last one from Chch was ken Yamamoto I think. Unfortunately for Chch players (NZ 2nd/3rd largest city) the almost accepted view now is that they need to move to Auckland or be at APFA Ole or WYNRS to have any chance. Shame but that appears to be the reality unless a non Auk coach is appointed but chances would be slim. However I see mike mcgarry has stepped down from taking Mosgiel 1st team next year. Would he have a crack I wonder? Would NZF even entertain the concept? Hopefully the South Island teams do really well at national FTC tournament in December - that might get some thinking there are options to the status quo.
Certainly not aware of Coastal approaching players via their Canterbury coach.
Certainly aware of one player wanting to come over due to how much he enjoyed the SI Tournament coaching.
Also certainly aware of club coaches doing the SI Tournament circuit as a recruitment drive. It's a bit tough on rep coaches to have to tell parents who coach at club level to leave it out.

And some of the youngsters coming through at Selwyn are very good & having the Burnley centre here , the kids in that will only improve
The future is looking good (as long as we hold onto them)
I agree Messi that outlying/growing clubs like Selwyn and Waimak are doing the right thing to offer an academy programme that is more accessible than FTC is for their local players.
The reality is that players will always move on seeking bigger and brighter opportunities. Club and coaches need to remember that we have a part to play - to help the player develop in the time they are with us. No-one owns the player.
Players also need to remember that club loyalty and community building are not things to treated with fly-by-night and I'm alright Jack indifference.
I'd reckon 1 in 10 players move for football development, the other 9 becasue they want to shift to be in a winning team.

hopefully they continue to play for their club through seniors (I guess)

I know no one owns the player , what I was saying is that when (and it will happen) Selwyn get a team into the MPL that the majority team will hopefully consist of players who have come through the ranks
That would be great messy :) I think selwyn has a good chance of producing a higher % of locals for an MPL team (and a distinct culture) due to it being a bit further away than inner Chch clubs, where it's relatively easier to play for a number of clubs within a 20min drive.
