Coastal 0 Chch United 1.
Coastal had Danny Moir red carded after approx 25 mins with score at nil all.
Penalty given up soon after when Coastal keeper Matt Thomas took down united player, Matt lucky to only see a yellow card, penalty well put away.
Coastal looked the better team for the rest of the game and unlucky not to gain at least a draw imo. Good save by MT in 2nd half he didn't know offside flag was coming.

Drummond was class when I played with him quite a while ago - natural footballer will be a lynchpin for them in central midfield distributing a lot of ball

Probably a fair call on the game, was a top day out. Game was full of dramarama with sending offs and close calls. Shame bout the result! All good.

Some very interesting results from this round, particularly Nelson on the rebound spanking Nomads!
ChCh Utd would probably be very happy to have picked up all 3 points yesterday given they struggled against a 10 man Coastal. Tough at the top. Darren Sunborn (ref) won't be welcome out east for a wee while.

It's insane how young Nelson's team is now. Despite Jerry Donga holding up the ball to much they completely dominated Nomads. Adam Smith was the star again and looked very good. Nomads will struggle this year. Once Gagame Feni is allowed to play (Nomads fielded a player from Canterbury United) then Nelson will be a top side.

Billy Scott has left the club for Western Suburbs in the Central Premier League.

Ok next up -

Saturday 2nd April

ChCh United v Nelson
Nomads v Halswell
Western v Coastal Spirit

My scores

Nelson to defeat ChCh United 2-1
Nomads v Halswell 1-1 draw
Western to defeat Coastal 3-1

An 11 man Nelson side should be too strong for an average ChCh United.
Nomads and Halswell are both struggling to score goals and should be evenly matched.
Western are one of the most attacking sides in the league and wellbalanced across the park, they should be to strong at home for Coastal who lose Danny Moir to suspension.

It isn't really a home game for Western, its getting played at Tullet. Its a shame Moir is banned as he would've been looking forward to playing his old team. Also i believe the bays vs tech game is on this weekend but i may be wrong.

I don't think Nomads will be at the bottom but they do need a top striker.
Nomads had 7 players [all likely to be in first 11] missing for the trip to Nelson and only Adam Nash of that group played last week, spotted him at the Coastal game.

The Canterbury United player that played in Nelson had been cleared by United as not required by them for next week.

From what I hear not all the Cant Utd players are returning to Tech, could be some surprises. And Tech will have had no games together as a team until they start their MPL games which may see them vulnerable for the first 2-3 games while others will have forged on and got their starting lineups sorted, will have to wait and see, same thing happened last year with Tech, Western and Nomads struggling in the early games once they got underway. Tech & Western came right but Nomads struggled the whole season.

Tech have had a whole ASB Premiership season together! The league is there's to lose every year. There is no benefits for the Mainland League by having all the talent at one club. It ruins the league.

ASB Premiership is not the same thing and stepping down to a lower league presents challenges on its own and the side they put out in the first game will not be the same as the one that plays the last game in the ASB Premiership, although I agree it really is theirs to lose.

Disagree with your statement that their are no benefits to one club having all the talent for 2 reasons.
Firstly if they can attract all the talent then good on them they must be doing something right. The benefit to the league is that all the other clubs must respond and try and match this or better it, i.e. competition is a good thing. What really detracts from the game is clubs saying boo hoo poor us we can't compete against them. Fortunately this is no longer the prevalent attitude amongst MPL clubs, and others (Richmond, FC 2011) are applying pressure from beneath as well which is the best thing for the game.
Secondly I don't believe Tech do have all the best talent. I'm pretty sure if you looked around the other clubs you could select an 11 that would match or better Canterbury United 100%. What they do have is a coach that manages to get the best out of his team and respects their loyalty. Winning breeds winners. All the best players at one club ruins the league? From who's perspective? Not mine that's for real. They set the standard, it's up to everyone else to match or better it. Their are various ways of doing this, mergers, paying players etc. but what it really requires is dedicated comitted people who are up to the challenge. Woolston Tech had a relatively recent period of poor performance at the premier level, they sorted themselves out and are now the dominant club, good on them. And don't forget they are looking for similar success in the women's league as well which is very good for the game in general.
One in a million

Really like these comments, Ronaldoknow. This situation occurs every so often in the women's game, and the same schools of thought are in evidence there re the pros and cons. I wish a few more folk shared your open-minded attitude on the subject.

As regards Tech not having all the Canterbury United players back, I hear a couple are having a few weeks off playing, also a change can be as good as a rest.
Nomads last season competed with Tech with a 2 nil win and a lucky [striker fell over his own feet] late penalty getting Tech a draw in the first meeting, just needs a couple of other clubs to put them to the sword early in the season.
Tech v Nomads on the 9th April will be the pick of the round.

Former Nelson Suburbs player Jamie Doris has bounced back from a broken leg to be named in the New Zealand under-20 squad. Hopefully Gagame Feni and Jerry Donga make the Solomon Island team.Luis Garcia2011-03-30 12:26:37

It seems Solomon Islands have named their squad with home-based players only. Gagame would walk in to that team and it's in New Zealand so I don't see the issue there.

Pressure being put on a couple of clubs by Mainland football to have them merged by the end of this season/year.
I hear thay have been told to have it done by mid year but what they [Mainland} forgot is that only one team per club in the MPL!!

Could be that Mainland are getting an ear full from that new club that I can't remember the year of, could be they need a way to get in the MPL for 2012.

So Mainland are wanting teams to merge so FC Twenty 11 gets free entry in to the league regardless of winning the promotion playoff?

Richmond looked very good at the pre-season tournament. Despite nearly losing to Nelson Suburbs reserve team, they were a class above. Hold on to possession the whole game and Sam Mason-Smith and Jorge Donoso were brilliant on attack.

If they don't get promoted this year then they never will.

Ooh interesting. What clubs have been told? Doesn't make a lot of sense as they can't change the rules halfway during the season regarding playoffs as that would be unfair to clubs. Mind you, this is Mainland!

I know a few people up near the top of the food chain were encouraging/suggesting a burwood + parklands merger to be done for this season or next. This would create a semi decent junior club which would hopefully push through the ranks to seniors too.

Other rumours I have heard over the years include hornby + halswell as well as pap/redwood & nomads...that was a few years back though and looking at whats happened since....dont see it happening
