Dramarama at the Nike Cup.  Coastal beat FC Twenty 11 2-1 however played a rolling sub and the Burnside part of the merger came out and they challenged and got the points reversed.  So now it's all on for the final placings.  Should be an interesting day two.

Same old same old.

Nike Cup: poor game from Co$tall Spt's rep team officials - they simply didn't read the rule book - and nearly cost the kids the chance to go thru to next round. Of that Canty rep team playing for CS, I wonder how many of the kids played 10th grade or under for CS or rangers or brighton?CS blushes were saved by Tech in the last game who came from 2 nil down at HT to draw vs FC2011 - who would have won it if they had collected 3 points.

Yes we all agree it was silly to play rolling subs when it wasn't. And we also agree that Tech did us/chch football a massive favour by drawing with FC2011 which allowed the best team to go through to the next round.

All in all a home grown 14th grade team beating 4 other 15th grade teams is quite an achievement. Don't you agree Stretford?

Best team? Yes; it a Canterbury rep team.
Home grown? As you well know that team has poached players from Cashmere, Nomads, Burnside, Tech and other clubs.

Obviously you don't know as closely as I do about this team but the coach and the bulk of that team has come through our pathway, with extra coaching and winning the Kanga Cup in Australia last year. In fact, most of those players have been together for years. Players move around it happens all the time, and it is great that our club is finally one of those that people want to play for now.   It is also great that players have chosen to stay with their local club rather than the Canty Acadamy which seems to be real poacher of football talent in the region.

On a more MPL note, the Coastal Spirit pre-season tournaments start this week with the women's tonite and men's tomorrow. Will be an interesting look at how things might be this year. Obviously without Nelson.

Oh please Vim, let's not disseminate lies: "Stay with local club" ha ha!
I only have a passing acquaintance with Co$stall Spit's team but I know the following 7 players (probably in starting 11) did not play for CS/NB/Rangers at 10th grade: Bryce (Nomads), Tyler, Marcel (Cashmere), Boon, Jackson (Avon), Ollie (Tech) & Coxy (Halswell). The lure was Kanga Cup. Listen, good luck n all but what development does a GK get playing behind a team like that - or others if they aren't playing against the best in their age week in week out because the best are all in one team? It will be interesting to watch the development of the players in Red's team who went thru a similar experience that these boys are heading towards. Proof will be in the pudding I guess.

An obvious passing acquaintance with the references made. I'm not going to go into personal details about the 13 year olds in this forum, as it is a little out of order. And your constant hassle with the $ in our name and now changing us to 'spit' does nothing for your argument and makes you look ridiculous.

What is wrong with offering kids decent football opportunities so they want to play at our club. For years NB and Rangers were looked down on and now we are on the way up there seems to be all this hassle from you. What's the problem?

I thought New Brighton and Rangers looked down on each other Vim and the rest of the world hardly cared?
All in all a great result for the lads getting through to the next round of the Nike Cup. To be honest I don't really care where they come from, what really interests me is getting involved with a club that sets high standards while providing football to meet the abilities of all players. If that means people perceive we offer greater opportunities than others that then leads them to travel across town to take advantage of those opportunities then so be it, it is a competitive sport and it is up to other clubs to respond isn't it? Certainly not poaching. The ChCh academy is a separate issue, basically it was established by Mainland because the perception was that Coastal were to succesful and something had to be done to placate the other clubs who were woefully indffective in acheiving this themselves. As for Reds team, they were a great bunch, well lead and very succesfull. Some of them are still with us, some have moved on to school teams etc. While they were together as a team I for one enjoyed their games and am confident they all benefited from the experience and wish them all well. They certainly provided their share of highlights for the club in the first 3 years, every club needs teams like that so there is the challenge, get stuck in and build teams like that and stop whingeing about clubs that manage to do so. And thank you Tech for drawing with FCTwenty11 on Sunday. God bless you.

Thanks for the honesty Ronaldoknow. I'd much prefer CS people are upfront about how they operate. A rep team (CS 13s) will generally beat a club team (even if a year older). As clubs do we want to develop 'home-grown' talent? Sure, because it is part of attracting others and helps perpetuate the next generation of the club. Mainland academy was undoubtedly a response. Will it die a natural death as other clubs get their A into G? Is football all about the club or the player? Both, IMHO. Professional academies (Everton APFA) invest in player devt so that a tiny % might end up at the club, right? Players benefit, club benefits. I'd like to see some of Red and Stroudy's teams playing MPL (and hopefully beyond) in a few years. Then I will congratulate Cstl Spt (it's just abbreviated for my horrendous typing Vim, don't get too sensitive and Southshore is a spit isn't it?) on their development program. The ends will have justified the means.
I see same accusations made of Tech's MPL side. How many of that squad are 'home-grown'? Who cares? Does it matter? The market will decide where players go (whatever level they wish to play at).
Any other attempt to 'structure' it "fairly" ends up being fraught with difficulties. "God bless the Tech lads"? Maybe, but didn't the 'market' find the right result on the weekend at nike cup?

PS the fctwenty 11 lads were cheering from the sideline "come on fc". I dearly hope they find a nickname quick because "FC" is just ripe to be abused.

I don't poach players and I resent the inferred  that I work for a club where that  is acceptable or the club's actual recruitment policy.

I coached 25 boys in 2 different teams 2010 season. 5 of these were new to Coastal. Only one player made the 2009 rep side(he played a year up).I nominated no players for Rep football in 2009 as I believe rep sides should be for the correct age group only.  In 2010 10 of them did. They made the rep team AFTER joining Coastal not BEFORE.4 of these 10 I have now coached for 5 seasons.

It was specifically listed in the Rep Coaches guide that no poaching of players would be accepted. I imagine this was in part because of our unhappiness with leaking our top players to other clubs once the rep season was complete.

Now that players and parents looking for high grade football see Coastal as an option we are the bad guys? Of the players trialing at the moment it is possible that no player new to Coastal will make the Division 1 side for the grade I select.

Yet we are poaching players?

Looking at it geographically maybe an argument could be made for residential zoning. We have players who also live near Burwood and Parklands clubs 'catchment areas'. One also might be closer to SAS or even Western. But as I imagine this is at best highly unlikely to happen we can expect competative parents to migrate to the clubs that seem to best align with their priorities.

Does offering a high performance unit , the COA and the Kanga Cup, an organized Coaching Network, and 12 months of football unbalance the Mainland Competition? If so, who is the onus on to address/fix this?

Internet whinging/agitation  is fine, I quite like it myself
but unquestionably for me Coastal is succeeding because people there have worked harder, not spent more $ or seemingly have a cosy relationship with the Mainland board.

Can't wait for the Nelson Suburbs vs Coa$tal $pirit match.

Nelson Suburbs

Out: Coey Turipa (GK), Eddie Newman (GK), Sam Ayers (FW), Matthew Elliott (CB), Alex Ridsdale (FW), Matt Shaw (DF), Casper Aengari (FW)

Alex Coles a former NZ Secondary School goalkeeper has joined the club after completing his university studies.
Gagame Feni will finally have a full season for Nelson.
Nelson has a very young squad, so, even with a number of key departures, the majority of the squad will be better players individually than last season. Members of Nayland College's second place effort at nationals will likely enter the fray later in the season.

                         Brandon Kay
                                       Gagame Feni

Adam Smith, Billy Scott, Haddis Aengari, Jerry Donga

Hamish Lewis, Mark Johnston, Matthew Ayloff, David Molloy

That's a handy looking team, apart from BK up front. Should be a cracker of a game first up for us in the MPL. Might pay to bring plenty of supporters, although you won't have to contend with the deck at Bexley this year at least. We've booked a jumbo for the return legs.

We had a "blue fever" last year (seen here at 6:10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB_BetHnuoM ) But due to nearly everyone now attending uni, and my role as a journalist, It's not going to be at the same level as last year. Which is a shame.
BK up front isn't the greatest but he is the target-man that Gagame Feni needs. Phil Ruggles from the Otago United ASB Premiership team was targeted, but don't think anything has eventuated there yet.

Mark Johnston would be my player to watch though. Very quality centerback who can also play in the midfield. Been through college in the US and surprised he wasn't in the Canterbury United set up. Reasonably young too, early 20s.

Man - I miss the Chch ethnic tournament. Many a great weekend spent there over the years.
Perhaps the best was when I was playing for the Scottish and we played the English, before the game there was a peace offering of Beer. Hillarious!

And for the lower level teams isn't there the Kaiapoi Tournament? Or has that died off?

Again Coastal are getting hassled for attracting players. Coastal do not, and will not pay players. People come here for a whole bunch of reasons: Kanga, Nike, Premier Women, Premier Men and their fantastic website....

Considering one of Richmond's favourites wanted to join us this year but we refused to match what he was getting paid by them it seems this argument is a bit like glasshouses and stone throwing!
