A sad day for football.  How'd it end up for Burnside anyways?

I'd be very surprised if anyone on the $800,000 payroll has it in their job description to go through team cards from x no. of teams every Monday morning!

Er, maintenance and preparation of playing fields at Cuthbert's Green is the responsibility of Christchurch City Council?

Either that protest was lodged within 7 days or the rule was brought in subsequently, not sure which but Burnside acted within the rules. Even though Rangers were acting in good faith by not seeking an international transfer based on the information the player himself provided, Mainland (who had also been asked by Rangers to check the players eligibility then gave the green light!) still enforced the rule once Burnside provided evidence to the contrary. Mainland are never in the wrong and there is no such thing as an innocent mistake. Save your money and flag the lawyers, you'll just be tipping thousands down the toilet. Varsities need to take any penalty on the chin then carry on and win the league.

From what I understand there will be no penalties for University in terms of points deductions, this can't be done due to the 7 day ruling.. Other clubs, apparently led by ChCh United are trying for this to happen, but it simply wont.. Not sure if there can be a financial penalty either??

SE, (this is gossip) I am fairly sure he got APFA role.
this may (or may not) have caused issues with his club
similar scenario has happened elsewhere, some clubs have been able to work something out to keep their best coaches, others are less flexible/fortunate

scenario for me is that best coaches going to the program that involves the most $ outlay from participants, so again we have financial stratification occurring in junior sports. I know football is not tennis but I can see (maybe I'm an alarmist) exactly the same situation occurring where the $ wins.

Junior Ginger played a full game for Nomads against Coastal in the English Cup, not sure on the rest.

Confirmed by an e-mailed press release through Alan Walker this afternoon. Working in the North west and out to Darfield, Amberley presenting Whole of Football to clubs and schools. Not quite the coach development role he was looking for?

APFA are short of coaches and I know some parents aren't happy with the setup at the moment considering the fees they are paying.

I heard that one of the groups ( I think they split them older/younger) was being coached by a young English lass who plays for Halswell first team. Nice enough but not a lot of coaching experience. Ivanov at least has plenty of offshore coaching experience and has been around the local scene long enough to understand the situation here. Well qualified to do the job I'd imagine. Essentially he would be replacing Jess Ibrom who went to USA! USA! USA!

I admire your socialist idealism Foal (truly). However, unless a sport is serious about ploughing really massive dollars into unearthing the best talent and then doing the humungous amount of work to create the best environment to nurture that talent (say for 5-10 years based on 10,000 hours principle), then the best talent - that can afford it -will go wherever that environment exists. NZ clubs and federation and sport not able to provide that at present so providers stepping in, ie "market forces" (remember that show?)

As NZ is so small financially we as a sport don't have the money to offer great football talent with no money the opportunities they deserve. Rugby can do it because we are the best in a small handful of OECD rich countries that play the sport and have the media/corporate/sponsorship backing to sustain the NZRFU and its franchises. Local club rugby is clucked.

If you are a big rich country then you can create those environments for talent that can't afford it. Not here. Here we do the best we can, but in no way is it ideal.

That is true. Shame they couldn't offer him a full time coach development role though. One area that is truly lacking in the code and a hard one for clubs to tackle. And a role that would give the greatest short term results imo.

Would hope for Tetso and FC's sake he'd carefully consider a move to APFA. Very high staff turnover, most without a happy ending.

Or this...in an ideal world the sport would provide; in reality, at least in this part of the world, we have to pay.

Any idea how much both kids & seniors pay in UK & Europe? Plenty more than in NZ, and that is just club football without attending any private provider academy. (But then they do get photo ID, so governing body can keep track of player eligibility .....think that's the last thing we'd want to have to start spending money on !!) More kids in the game by keeping costs down. Unfortunately "user pays" for anything above that, but that's reality. Shouldn't be the reason for denying opportunity to those that are talented and can afford it.

Gings I am pretty sure that case prompted the introduction of the 7 day rule. And if I remember correctly Rangers took legal action in that instance to defend the use of an illegal player only to lose at NZ Football level and at the CAS.

Would be interesting to see how a club would get on this time round but I suspect the same result would occur.

Good call Vim yes if the cards were checked weekly and acted on if required then any brenches would be dealt with straight away. Does seem strange that looks like another club have to make a complaint rather than Mainland enforcing their own rules.

In the good old days of CFA this task was undertaken by volunteers, and all cards were checked (Seniors and Juniors)! Interesting that Mainland with a payroll of $800,000 p.a. can't check any.

Sorry to quote myself guys but just had a thought -
why don't the referees check the cards on a Monday? They surely have access to the Mainland player database and they love enforcing the rules. Could be another income stream for them apart from the $35 per game clubs are paying?

On a roll.

Thinking about the 7 day rule it is ridiculous, for one obvious reason - rival clubs don't have access to another teams card before, during or after the game so how are they supposed to protest an illegal player? Especially as the body that administers the game doesn't check the cards either? Ridiculous, are we relying on third party train spotters then? Reminds me of the game a couple of years ago where Coastal and Halswell were potted for each playing an under 16 player without written consent having been forwarded to Mainland by the parents. Both teams were awarded a 3-0 loss and who dobbed them in? A Mainland employee who happened to watch the game. $800,000 wage bill and farce is all we get? Tui billboard coming right up.
