yes. a big learning curve. from what I saw of the second half , selwyn went into survival mode and moved away from their own game plan . will learn a lot from the experience.

Yup I was there. For the first 20 mins it was very competitive. The wind kicked up which didnt help, but end of the day Selwyn were much better side and played the better football.
Burwood today, just werent good. Hacked players and lost their way a little.
Would have been interesting if Burwood scored from the spot early on which would've given them the lead. Anyway.... round 2 draw ahoy

Yeah fair result, although at 1-1 Burwood had a penalty saved and after 30 minutes or so Selwyn really got on top. Was 4-1 at halftime and the 8-2 result was a fair one. Burwood are a good side wasted in Div5 due to politics. Only thing they need to work on are their tactics for coming up against better sides. To have players on the pitch AND the coaching staff/players on the bench yelling out 'Take him out' when Dan Ede and other players dribbled past 3 or 4 of them is poor at best. They may not be used to playing with proper referees etc, but that is verging on inciting violent play. Yes we all give away 'tactical fouls', but we don't yell out to 'Take him out'. Some of their efforts to take out players were just plain dangerous as well.
Selwyn have struck a few sides who are very physical and try to let us know that they are there to win every challenge, but the feeling in the camp after was it was the worst we have come up against this season, even compared to physical sides like Parklands, Hornby. We were really pushing to blow out the score as much as we could.
Sides like Burwood and Hurunui can only benefit from playing at as high a level as they can as they have shown they are good sides. Maybe if a full SI league came in, it would force a rethink of the levels underneath and the teams in each division could be properly worked out

Sorry my bad for probably not differentiating topics well enough in my post. I wasn't comparing Hurunui to Burwood in terms of being dirty, rough etc. I played against them for the Selwyn Div3 team last year and they were pretty good, and their results this season have been also very good. My point in mentioning both of them together was a point about trying to get these clubs with good teams all into 1 division. Include Burwood, Hurunui, Mid-Canty, Pap-Redwood etc in a division with other clubs outside of a SI league to showcase a full region of football.
I would rather see teams in Div1 (for example) that are able to win promotion to MPL, rather than if CashTech turtles or Ferrymead Bays won Div1 then nothing would change. Again nothing against these sides personally, just think Div1 could be done a bit better
Mid Canty had their chance last year and despite random scores teams have to earn their spot by winning other divisions. As much as I'd want to design my own Div 1 it gets a little complicated.

Yeah it would then cause havoc with Div2 downwards and leave teams with no chance of promotion winning their league etc. The current system isn't broken and unusable, just has a few cracks show up along the way sometimes.
So the question is... what do we do with really good random teams that show up in Div 6 and my only answer is that if there's a gap somewhere else and the others don't want it they go there.

Large well run clubs do not have random teams ( setting myself up for smart comments here..fire away!). They grade players into a number of suitable teams they have in various divisions. They offer stability in competitions. More players join, they enter another team in the lowest division, and the quality works it's way up the divisions. As players leave, the opposite happens and the teams gradually relegate to lower divisions. A smoothing effect rather than extreme changes season on season.
So what happens if random teams (irrespective of how they came to life, and I know there is a case for Burwood going back to the failed u23 league) are given slots in an equally random unsupported fashion. Here one year gone the next.

A good response, but one thing I've noticed is that a lot of these Larger run clubs have a habit of pulling in these better players from the 'smaller' clubs which does not help them to establish teams at a higher level.
A lot of this starts happening at Junior Level with 'poaching' of rep players etc, but similar things happen at the higher levels too but in a different way.
It also doesn't help with clubs merging and effectively being 2 or 3 clubs against 1. In the end this is going to lead to 'smaller' clubs struggling to maintain their identity, yet these clubs are needed to avoid repetitive matches

They do a great job in the community and are helping to drive football forward with a high proportion of their time spent with the youngsters. Seems to be lacking with the Women's Div 1 & Div 2 as Christchurch Utd have been moved down after 4 games and Hornby up having played 5.....
Whilst it does seem fair enough a bit with Utd's results, Hornby get to keep the 15 points they've gained in div 2 and take over Utd's remaining fixtures. The issue..... Utd have played 3 of the leagues top teams (who are a cut above all bar one others) so effectively Hornby get 15 points (putting them joint top!) from games they would have realistically expected to challenge to get 3 points maximum from! They are then left to play the easier teams in the league, whom with only 4/5 games of the round left would struggle to catch them!
Adding in the top teams in the league have an enlarged goal difference as a result of having played Utd, teams that were forced to move up to Div 1 before the season started are being hard done by again!

We seem to be talking about different things. I hear there are a few workers in the city (likely working on the rebuild) that may have expired visa's an a few of the lads are playing down the grades and one or two teams could be missing a few players in coming weeks.
