Sad news. Ivan was a massive contributor to Canterbury football. Will be remembered by all the Cantebury under 12 players who played under him and who were constantly reminded of the legacy of that Canterbury age group and the standard that was required. Ivan knew how to get the best out of individuals and the team. In my year in under 12,s we went into the final round robin game a point behind Otago and had to win to keep the title. He convinced us that our strength was in our attack so played a 3 - 2 - 5 formation. We scored two early and held on to beat Otago 2-1 to win the tournament. He made us believe that it would happen.
Ivan took many Canterbury underage rep teams team overseas and was always at the forefront of fundraising efforts to get them there. He was a huge part of the Canterbury Junior Football Association which ran junior football on a volunteer basis from the 1960's to about the 1990's. As Gavin has commented he was a major contriburtor to Shamrock and then later the CFA, senior body of Canterbury football. In my humble opinion he will go down in Canterbury football as a true legend of the game. Best wishes Briar and family. RIP Ivan
