That's not true. They were being bankrolled by Phil Whitely, who claimed he had a revolutionary data compression technology that was worth billions, but it was all fantasy and he was convicted of a $5.3 million fraud and sentenced to 5 years. He was arrested during the season in 2008 and Richmond were left scrambling to find enough money to pay for transport to Christchurch to play the rest of their games.

Worth noting that Phil Whitley has been in the news again lately for scamming people again.

I was ball boy for every single one of those MPL games, what a team we had! Batram Suri was amazing, Benjamin Totori played about half the games for us before Whitley (and his money) went and was still the top scorer for the league that year from memory. We lost quite a few players for the rest of the season after the arrest, we had 4 or 5 Solomon Islanders who all disappeared and I'm pretty sure the one that stayed was deported for sexual assault.

From what I know, money is looking stronger than 2011 which is when we last considered having a go at the MPL but we don't quite have the same talent all over the park. Still, would be nice to have another crack at it!
