It's only for a few more weeks Selwyn fans. The rest of you, however....

You'll have to get past Richmond Athletic first (should they choose to aim for promotion)!

Is that something they'll look at? If they do does that mean ccl winner + upper si contender play off?

Yes

10 Jul 07:50

last time they played in top league mainland had to pay for them to complete the season as spent all there money on Jeremy brockie! So would they be willing to take that risk again

Whoever wins the league won't get past a very good Richmond side so another year in Ccl I think

Yes, would be a play-off between the various winners - home and away, if more that one wishes to play in the MPL

THIS. Anyone know if Richmond have the ambition and means at present?

Word from that way it would appear so.

That's not true. They were being bankrolled by Phil Whitely, who claimed he had a revolutionary data compression technology that was worth billions, but it was all fantasy and he was convicted of a $5.3 million fraud and sentenced to 5 years. He was arrested during the season in 2008 and Richmond were left scrambling to find enough money to pay for transport to Christchurch to play the rest of their games.

Correct, Richmond played in the MPL in 2007 and 2008 - got relegated at end of 2008 and Jeremy did not turn out for them in 2008.

Worth noting that Phil Whitley has been in the news again lately for scamming people again.

I was ball boy for every single one of those MPL games, what a team we had! Batram Suri was amazing, Benjamin Totori played about half the games for us before Whitley (and his money) went and was still the top scorer for the league that year from memory. We lost quite a few players for the rest of the season after the arrest, we had 4 or 5 Solomon Islanders who all disappeared and I'm pretty sure the one that stayed was deported for sexual assault.

From what I know, money is looking stronger than 2011 which is when we last considered having a go at the MPL but we don't quite have the same talent all over the park. Still, would be nice to have another crack at it!

Can all clubs afford 4 trips to nelson. There are a couple of clubs who you can see struggling with this. Has anyone from nelson/ Richmond league or Marlborough league said they would like to go into play off this year. My understanding was you had to state this before season began. Maybe all white could do some investigation into this v

Four trips to Nelson should not be an issue for Chch clubs considering Suburbs currently  have 10 or 11 trips to Christchurch every season..

11 Jul 09:17

I can't afford 4 trips to Nelson. I am still recovering from the last one.

I let my guitar speak for me

Untrue, once winner confirmed from nelson league they then can make their decision

That was the rule FC69 when I was involved (up until a couple of seasons ago). All teams in both qualifying leagues had to notify Mainland of their intention to participate in a playoff before the season commenced. Not sure if it still applies.

If unsure we can make it up as we go along.

Can't see Richmond wanting to push for promotion when they've turned down better chances before.

In saying that, it'd be great to see it happen. Nelson should have two teams in the Mainland Premier League.

Have Richmond had a better chance since 2010? This is the strongest team I can think of since then and money was the only reason we didn't push for it then.

The two English imports are both leaving Nelson in the next couple of weeks though, so the run in may not be quite as dominant.

Is it really? This is the same team that lost to Marlborough in the Chatham Cup. Without Hickey and Turner, it'd be a very even Nelson league.

With those two it is, without them they're bog standard for Nelson. Would need to recruit heavily to be competitive in Mainland. Doubt we'll have the personnel to win promotion though.

Imagine there won't be a lot of football on this weekend - Chatham cup and CCL only?  Mainland will be sweating on a few Divisions not finishing out the season at this rate

Feeling thankful we play CCL again this weekend as cancellations all round except for CCL and Chatham Cup

Willly was at he chch united match where Daniel Ede bagged 3 of his 20 so far (and he didn't play in first 4.)

Not sure if he stayed 90 minutes but stats don't lie.

Didn't see the game but Selwyn win over Burwood 4-3 after trailing 2-0 early. Good they got the win, but will need some energy for next few weeks

You're right about stats not lieing but they certainly don't give the whole story just as much as Changs lack of goals, although he never struck me as being National League quality whenever I saw him play.

True it doesn't give full story.  None of Selwyn top 5 coach or do any admin for the club.

The Question is now - Where will that game be played?  With most of the pitches in Chch having significant water on them and more rain predicted Wed/Thurs and Fri will that mean MPL/CCL/WPL only games again?
