Cashmere Technical 6 (Monique Barker 2, Lara Wall, Lee Maoate-Cox, Nicola Dominikovich, Macey Fraser) Waimakariri 0 HT 2 - 0
Nicola Dominikovich named as MVP
Not sure who decided mvp but for me can't see how it didn't go to Lara Wall. She absolutely destroyed the waimak left side defence and put 2 on a plate to give Tech a 2 goal lead within 9 minutes. She tormented the waimak defence for 90 minutes. Nicola played well

NZ Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup Semi-Final
Wellington United 0 Coastal Spirit 1 (Chloe Jones) after extra time
Great result for Coastal to reach the Cup Final for the third time, with the team down to ten players after Mel Cameron received her second yellow card in the first period of extra time before Chloe scored from a corner.
Second semi played tomorrow with Hamilton Wanderers hosting Auckland's Eastern Suburbs. Final set down for Sunday 8th September.

I know I should be happy everyone is back playing; but these results fill me with a groundhog day kind of feeling.
Halswell have lost a few players from last season, have a new coach again and are probably rebuilding. Bit of a shame because they had a promising side last year. Cash Tech always strong but with Flea will be pretty hard to beat. Waimak have a number of new signings and may take a few weeks to get the right combinations. Yesterday Coastal without a couple of big name players were too fast too strong and just better all over the park. Waimak no doubt will improve but looks like the contest at the top will be between the same 2 big teams. Anyhow great to see football again albeit in very difficult conditions.
What are the other clubs doing for female football? Bays, Western, FC 2011, Selwyn, Nomads, Nelson Suburbs, Halswell have all had WPL teams in the past. Would be great to see more clubs being aspirational to compete with the rest. Yes it would be hard to compete with Coastal and Cash Tech, but the rest of the teams would be good games to guage progress against.

Nomads I know have a CWCL team that are quite young and only stepped up to senior football last year. I would imagine their plan is to spend a few years at that grade then look to make the step up.
They certainly had a number of younger girls teams so if that progression continues then they will no doubt improve over the next few years

Halswell do have a team in the WPL, finished third last season, rebuilding this season, with a new coach, after around of ten of last season's squad have moved to other Mainland WPL teams, Looking at squads for the opening round over the weekend looks like five to Coastal and five to Waimak (I may have missed some).
Seem to be a big issue with good numbers playing at secondary school level, both female and male, but for whatever reason many of these players seem to be lost to the sport once they leave school.

There are not really enough players coming through. Even when a club starts pushing young players to form a good team, the other teams, already established, rip them apart and take any good players at the end of the season. It will be hard for any club to briing a team through while this is still accepted.

Waikak the bye
looks like this league could be a lot closer than it looked after the first few rounds. Waimak should have beaten Cash tech quite comfortably on chances created. Very late equalizer got CT a point. Next weeks game between Coastal and Cash Tech will be interesting but Coastal will be without the players who got marched today.
