Lately, I have spoken to many players who tell me they have been
offered or recieve an amount of money per game they play plus free
gear etc for the coming season. Is this quite prevalent in
Wellington club football or does it just apply to the larger
Central League teams? Is this practice legal in the competition
rules? Where do these clubs get the money to be able to offer such
deals?

I dont get paid and I dont blame the club for not wanting to pay
me.
Doesnt everyone get free gear to play in?
A dog with a bone :)

I heard that Greg Uhlmann went to Eastern Suburbs and said that
he'd play for them if they gave him $40k....

I know that its been happening in CL footy since the early
70s and I can tell you that one Wellington club (in the 80s )
hired a private plane to fly a player in and then back home each
Saturday. On top of this,he was to recieve a four figure sum at the
end of the season. Three years later , a Taranaki club offered him
the same deal,but he declined.
Personaly I think its absurd, though I realise it is the
right of the clubs' to do so if they think it will improve
there lot. Travel expenses in the form of petrol reimbursements etc
is more than adequit for this level.

1-2K for a CL Player is fine.....but Graham Little and Geoff brown
getting 20K odd is rubbish for the region.
But good on them if they got the offer I would take it
too.

most playerz in NL auckland clubs were getting paid ..when i say
most i mean the top 2 or 3 in each club..I know that Dean dodds was
on at least 400 per game at glenfield, everyone gets boots etc and
no fees trackies , but 400 per game?? and wat prizemoney is there
at the end?? jack sh iite .
In auck its the norm for playerz to get 250-350 per game..damn
thats an weekly wage for the average kiwi

No wonder then that US1 told their clubs to pull out of Northern
League. That is the admin decision of the year because finally
greedy players can't dictate to clubs up there. Fair enough to
supply free gear and boots but cash payments to players that can
send a club to the wall? Given the standard, what a waste. If
players are good enough and had an ounce of ambition they
should try their luck with an NZFC franchise, not try to fleece a
local club in whatever local winter league.

If a fraction of the money that is alleged to be chucked around by the North Shore clubs had been spent on an NZFC side they would be title contenders.
Ridiculous.

its not like it doesnt happen in the CL or wellington/south
regions there leagues are no better than NL, also wat FED 1
did was the worst thing ever but now those same clubs will ask for
dispensation to play in the auckland Comp rather than make long ass
trips to north force etc to play 2nd div sides...
if they dont let those clubs go many of them will fold as most
of the players will move to onehunga ellerslie waitak Bay olympic
etc....and still get paid wat they where or possibly more given the
travel..
I hear onehunga are one of the biggest spenders many of
their guys were commanding 250-400 per game and look where it got
them!!! mind u their ex coach spends more time doing his hair
for telly than concentrating on coaching no wonder they gave him
the chop..

I am sure just about every player in the CL is getting paid. Some
more than others.

Naki are Cental League next season. Gisbourne pulled out
because of increased costs. They flew 85% of the team in from
Auckland each week. Some rich Russian dude had a private
plane.
Its no longer a problem.

I think the CL has to have a set pay structure. Maybe something
like,
top 2 to 3 marquee players on contract
the rest of the squad on a fixed win bonus which is the same
for all clubs.
If the club breaks the rules they run the risk of player
suspension
To many clubs are struggling in the CL to pay for travel costs
plus pay their players. This will hopefully help the clubs
financially plus keep players at the club instead of going to the
highest bidder.
Also decent prize money is a must for 1st,2nd and 3rd
places

The figures some clubs are rumoured to be paying, and the figures
players are asking for are completely over the top.
(However, I always take these amounts with a little pinch of salt, because a couple of years ago, I heard what Stop Out was rumoured to be paying certain players, and I knew the reality
) .
None the less, I have very strong doubts about whether the game can sustain players being paid at the third level or below in the footballing pyramid. (CL & NL - third level down, Wellington Premier fourth level). After all, what do paying players add to the club (apart from a big wage bill). You win the Central League - a five minute wonder, and a prize of what? (3 soccer balls I believe). Sign a big name player on a weekly payment of $800 - how many paying customers does it add to the gate?
I'm not talking about the players signed to play, and work for clubs coaching juniors or whatever. This is a different story, as long as they are doing the job - it is not just a sinecure. But the so-called Marque players swanning around the game locally, when we can't even afford the Marque. I seriously believe if it isn't controlled the future of the game is in jeopardy , considering what some of the older juniors are expecting as they move into senior football.

Paying players is supposed to be a secret. After all most of the
money is probably coming out of the Juniors and they wouldn't like
that! SportZone2007-12-24 18:56:50

No good when the Juniors have to take a pay cut to pay the
Seniors. No wonder Arakura cant hold onto its Juniors.

Yes they didn't like paying for their gear or their subs for that
matter. They start them young over there!

Just remember the players being paid are bigger than the game.
( All we have to do is decide what game)

I am a strong believer that football is a team game so all squad
players should be paid equally - the rate being determined by;
gate-takings minus all costs of putting them on the pitch,
subscriptons if excused, payments to be also shared equally
among those working to keep the club going. I agree with earlier
postings that payments are crippling clubs - especially with NZ
Soccer and the Federations racking up fees to exorbitant levels,
then charging clubs and players for any service that they DO
use - and simultaneously sucking up a great deal of the
available pokie trust money.

If you take most CSL team they don't have gate takings and most do
not pay players as such. It is a big effort by all clubs to stay a
float in this tight market of sponsorship or should I say hand outs
from gaming machines. But the squeeze will come to the point where
all club will have go back to old fashioned fund raising
at the malls with raffles sausage sizzlies etc.
