From the Capital Football site:

Capital Football will soon have a vacany for the Director of Coaching role.
After many years in this povital position Mick Waitt will be moving on in late December.
We will be calling for applications in the next couple of weeks.

Any takers, who would you like to see in this role?

Its a real shame and leaves a hole in Wgtn coaching ranks. he may not have been the best 'team' coach (the All Whites and TW results reflect that) , but he sure knew his stuff when it came to teaching technique and tactics to individuals

I'd like to see Matt Calcott try for the position. He's come a long way in terms of coaching in the last 4-5 years and would be a good "younger" option and he's a Wellington boy, which I think would be an advantage for him.

Agreed Barber. It would be nice for someone already in the region to be given the opportunity, especially if they are as good as any "high-profile canidates" or those who were born the in UK and have been in the country for 5 minutes, as has often the case. He is passionate about football and has proven himself to be able to coach at all levels, junior, youth and senior. No offence to any non-New Zealanders, but we need to get as many NZ born coaches working in the top positions as possible, to develop a New Zealand culture in the game and give aspiring kiwi-coaches something to aim for which will help NZ football grow.

I hope we get the best person for the job, some of you guys would know potential candidates better than me but remember the ability to coach is only one of the skills needed. Things like the ability to communicate, mentor other coaches, set a strategic direction, breakdown the club/college divide, instigate and promote multiple pathways for young players to succeed, lead a group of other coaches, manage and run coaching and development programs would be at least as important I would have thought. Starting to sound a bit like HR "patter"

Don't believe Calcott holds the relevant qualifications.

Likely: Andrew Hedge, Gary Jenkins, Tom Randles.

Other possibilities: Charlie Howe, Stu Jacobs (starting after Phoenix season), Aaron MacFarland (return from Auckland).

I'd imagine they'll get some overseas interest too, these positions usually do.

Having worked under Matt at Wests a few years ago when he was in charge of the Reserves, i can honestly put my hand on my heart and say he is one of the best coaches around in Wellington at the moment. Along with Stu, Charlie and (love him or hate him) Brendan McIntyre, they'd be my 4 top candidates.

Eventually, i'd like to see Stu involving Matt and Macca at Team Wellington. Let me justify this before people bring out the obligatory "Boys Club" or "Hes a Loose Cannon" suggestions.

Stu - great man manager, knows his players inside-out and is top level communicator
Matt - tactical mastermind, is willing to go the extra-mile to give his players the best information possible about the "hows" and "whens" of football

Macca - Mr X Factor. I've played with (Wests), worked under (Wests, LHCAFC) and coached (Wests u19s) with Macca and while he will never claim to be aTactical Genius or PR expert, what he will do is give his players the confidence to go out and impose themselves on the game. He has calmed down a lot in the last cupla years and is really starting to turn some heads I believe.

Andy Hedge has been a great servant to Wgtn Football and so has Tom Randles, but I think some new, fresh blood is needed to revitalise Capital Football and 1 of these 3 men above are the ones for the job.

Nuff said.

We need someone who teaches the philosophy of continental football (technique based, ball on the deck etc) instead of this British mentality New Zealand football seems to have. Couldn't care less about nationality, although I do agree more resources and opportunities need to be provided for New Zealand football coaches.

Hope the big fella finds success in his new role where ever that maybe. He done alright but nothing more than what was expected. I'm pleased he's going its time for someone else to lift Wgtn Football. I like to see Jenkins put his name in the hat, definately not Tom he's past it.
Stu would be great but he can't do justice to many roles, Matt and Brendon not up to it, Brendon still to fiery and Matt still riding on the back of Stu's acheivements.

fair enuf call footywatcher, i guess i let my loyalties (to Macca and in some weird way to Wests, even if its been years since i played there) get the better of me sometimes.

.... Matt still riding on the back of Stu's acheivements.

Mate, thats a bit harsh Footy Watcher - while Stu has definetly been an influence on Matt and Wests, Matt has basically been the coach of Wests for the last year and a half (remember Stu's has been with the 20s prep and World Cup, the Nix towards the end of last season and beginning of this year etc) so give the guy a break and give credit where credit is due.

As a coach, he still has to the have the players trust, to play the style he wants them to play and to be able to motivate them for every game to be at their best.

So let the facts speak for themselves - Matt coached Wests to win the Central League this year and again make the final of the Chatham Cup....(without Stu) so riding on the back of Stu's achievements - maybe....but more like, Matt is an upcoming coach in his own right who has the ability to go further.

Lets not forget, like the youngsters coming through, we need to encourage these young coaches too and provided they upskill themselves and even better if they are local lads then all power to them! chareimos2007-11-01 16:50:49

Are your gloves on a little too tight today DKP???

Which continaent are we talking about here? We have 7 to choose from and i'm sure two of them don't have many qualified coaches...

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Wrong. Stu has been gone from Wests for ther best part of 2 seasons. I think if you asked any of the Wests players this yearif they felt Matt was up to the job, you'd get the same positive response.

Have you ever  been to see a Wests training session ?

I have to agree wth you totally Toretts. From what I have seen first hand and from talking to Wests players, Matt has been the driving force for the last couple of years. It was Stu who took them in the final last year, but it was Matt who was in charge in the big games to get them there. He should be involved in the Team Wellington scene as well, but it seems politics has had a say. Rumour has it there was pressure from other member clubs that were afraid of an alll West's management team being involved, even if they were the best for the job. Team Wellington surely isn't about the "member clubs", but about achieving success for the region in the NZFC, and if one "winter club" happens to dominate the playing and coaching team then so be it. As it is Wests have their ex head coach, their strength and conditioning coach, goalkeeping coach and 1st team manager involved plus half their playing team. Come the start of pre-season and Central League they will be the biggest losers as they will have all these people unavailable due to Team Wellington, and you don't hear them moaning as they see the bigger picture and what is best for the region.

Think you might find Miramar have a bigger player contribution this season...not the point though...TW must have the best from all clubs available and all clubs acknowledge the overlap in seasons restricts their access to players but the best players must play NZFC!
I think the change is good for Mick & Wgtn football. A new energy and desire to improve coaching and player depth is needed.
