In 2008, we've seen Egypt emerged as African best in Ghana. Then this morning Spain came out as champion of Europe. Who will be the Wellington Region best? What we know is the inaugural tournament was won by Sudan beating Zimbabwe by 3 goals to 1 and the 2nd edition was won by United Kingdom beating Sunday Celtic.

It's Communities Football Fever!!!

Are you proud to represent your birth country? Would you like to exhibit the football skills your homeland is known for?

The Upper Hutt Multi Ethnic Council Inc with the support of His Worship the Mayor Wayne Guppy, Upper Hutt City Council, Activation Team, Sport Wellington Region, Capital Football, New Zealand Aids Foundation, and Wellington Phoenix Football Club would like to invite your community and groups working and involved with communities to register their interest to field a team in Mini World Cup 2008, the 3rd Regional Ethnic Football Tournament to be held in Upper Hutt.

The tournament is intended to celebrate individual national heritage, cultural diversity, race unity, and in particular to celebrate grassroots football and provide opportunity for players to promote their cultures, mingle, network and share their settling in experiences.

Regional Ethnic Football Tournament (aka Mini World Cup) has successfully grown from eight teams of about fifteen nationalities to sixteen teams of twenty-five nationalities within two years of existence. To accommodate the growth, this year's edition will be played over six weeks to include a quarter-finals stage.

The question is who will win the 3rd Regional Ethnic Community Football Tournament? The 2008 winner will have the privilege to represent Upper Hutt at the inaugural New Zealand Communities Football Cup in Wellington on the weekend of November 28 30 just after the FIFA U 17 Women World Cup to determine the Countrys overall winner.

Game on!

Entry Fee: $100

Hi Monkey Boy, Congratulation on your team's promotion to the Champs Premier. You took Capital 1 by surprise. I guess Stoke Valley will join you (finger crossed) - if we get our formation right. I understand Sudan have been practicing for the World Cup.

Hi Salmon, You've been a strong pillar for our lovely sport in Wellington, I mean NZ, I mean NZAUSS. - I've drop an email about what has been keeping away and maybe keeping me away from updating the World Cup blog.

Sorry Guys. However as this is the latest confirmed interest - note we need 16 teams and I think the final 16 would depend on who sent in the entry fees first;

Kiwi United Kingdom - defending champion (confirmed)
Tartar Barmy - 2nd last year (confirmed)
Somalia - (confirmed)
Tulvalu - (confirmed)
Kiwi Bafana Bafana - (confirmed)
Zimbabwe - (confirmed)
Sudan - (confirmed)
Fiji - (confirmed)
Denmark - (confirmed)
Europe XI - (confirmed)
Lower Hutt Police - (confirmed)
Turkey - (TBC)
South Africa - (TBC)
Israel - (TBC)
Korea - (TBC)
Mexico (TBC)
Oromo - (TBC)
Assyria - (TBC)
West Africa - (TBC)

So, 11 teams are certain to participate and guess from the 8 'to be confirmed' will can get the remaining 5 teams.

Greeks will consider putting a team in for this.
Players of the likes of Jimmy Haidakis, George Barbarouses, Costa Barbarouses, Paul Kathroulas, Paul Soulis, Wade Pulford, John Carras, Leo Bertos, Steve Kamberiagiannis, John Gerondis, Jamie Soulis, Mikey Halikias (If back from Greece), Anthony Neonakis, Jerry Claudatos.

I think urv got a winning team right there.

I'm a lot busier now than when I first considered (and that counts as being too busy for Australia, not just Australian Greeks/Greek Australians/Melbourne ) but drop me a PM closer to the time and I'll see how my time commitments are. Will do what IU can but yeah, priorities...

Last Saturday games were full of upsets and  drama! Upsets in the sense that Assyria ended their unbeatable runs since the begining of the tournament 3 years ago with a 1 - 0 lost to Fiji Sangam. What a beautiful game of football match. Also, Somalia came back from last week defeat to beat much favoured Zimbabwe by 7 - 4.

Group D so-call "group of death" has live up to its name - we will have to wait till the end of the last game to know the two teams that will progress to the quarter final (finger crossed). Eurasia XI Vs Oromo, and Tartan Barmy Vs Turkey matches will be another final before final. Also, the battle for the first place in group C will be another exciting football match to watch - Sudan Vs Kiwi Bafana.
