As Wellington is only a short flight from little old Nelson, I figured there may be many ex Nelsonians floating round the forum (myself included). 1st Division is an 8 team league this year, which could result in the odd cricket score as IMO the depth was struggling at 6 last year. Anyway, here's a season preview before it kicks off this weekend.
Have any of the clubs indicated that they would seek promotion (probably via playoff) to Mainland Premier should they win the League?

This would probably be the latest on that front - http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/sport/67459417/... - although a few years off at least (for FC Nelson) as they seem to be rebuilding with what I've heard is a really new young squad this year. They won the league in 2012 and 2013 but didn't have the $$ to go for promotion unfortunately.
FC Nelson have MPL aspirations but that is probably in a few years. They might struggle while Nelson College is there (with two teams).
Richmond are content with being in division one.

Plus being a College side (and from a pretty small town) there just isn't the depth for a squad that could compete in MPL. Both FC Nelson and Richmond have young teams and are in rebuilding phases so to speak. I can see the league getting much stronger in perhaps 2 or 3 years, because there is a great amount of good young players around in Nelson, which was shown as the Falcons won the youth league earlier this year.
Hmmm, an 11-0 and a 10-0 in the opening round isn't a good look. Richmond thrash Nelson College Academy and Suburbs smash Wakefield.

College 1st X1 drew 2-2 with newly promoted Suburbs Seals, while FC Nelson went down 4-1 vs Marlborough. College should have won, plenty of chances late on, Seals keeper made some great saves. From what I saw (the first half) FC Nelson looked poor but with a new team will take time to get going, however there is potential there. Could be a long season for some teams, let's hope there is plenty of improvement.
Nelson Pine Industries Division One Round Two
Nelson Suburbs Seals 3 - Richmond 0
Marlborough Development 3 - Wakefield 1
Nelson Suburbs First XI 1 - Nelson College First XI 4
FC Nelson 4 - Nelson College Academy 0
Some interesting results in there, with Richmond and Suburbs both losing after massive wins last week.

Richmond 1 - Nelson Suburbs first XI 1
Academy side improving already, with most results proving fairly unpredictable so far.

A review of the 2015 season. A promoted team who don't train win First Div. Makes you wonder!

If a Suburbs team has won the Nelson Div1, does that rule them ineligible for promotion to MPL? So whoever wins the Chch Div1 will be promoted?

That's generally the case anyways isn't it. But I guess yes, you couldn't have 2 of the same club teams in MPL, just like the CHCH Div 1.
I let my guitar speak for me
