ok so there have been a few stories of good sportsmanship recently (generally these don't involve me) so I thought I would start a thread where you can comment individuals, teams or clubs (or whatever) for being a good sport.

Here's an email I received a couple of weeks ago to kick things off. Its from a Stop Out manager following a game against Karori Stags

G'day

Yesterday we played the stags at Hutt park at 12:30. Was a fantastic game the most enjoyable game this season by far.

We were 2-1 up with 20 minutes to go. After the stags already having a penalty saved and missing some pretty good chances it wasn't looking like we were going to hang on for the win.

The stags were awarded a corner and from a brilliant cross over into the box they scored from one of there players controlling it and taping it in pretty much right on the goal line. The goal was awarded with no fuss from us. We picked up the ball and walked back up to half way to kick off where the stags were all in a huddle having a group discussion. After about 30 seconds they walked over to us and the Ref who was from our club and told us it was no goal and that in fact there player had hand balled it before he scored. We were all stunned but they insisted they didn't want the goal. We carried on to win the game 3-2 after we both scored another goal each. In my 18 years of playing football i have never seen anyone in football or met a team as honest and fair as the stags were yesterday. I think its fantastic that your club has a team of young guys like this.  I invited them into our club rooms after the game and our team was going to shout them all a round but they said they were all in a hurry and needed to get back home. I mentioned this story in the game speeches after the game where it received a standing ovation from all of our senior teams including marists 1st and 2nd teams and the other supporters who were back having a quiet drink.

Please give these guys a big Thank you and big pat on the back from all of our club. We are all looking forward to Round 2 later in the year at Karori park.

Cheers

Hands up who thinks this thread would never have started if that email hadn't been about the Wharf?

I to have witnessed some good sportsmanship displayed by the stags, (or it could have been simpathy)
We were on the receiving end of a bit of a towling by the stags on saturday, but mid way through the second half, when the score was already about 7 or 8-0, one of our few ventures into their goalbox resulted in a (purely accidental) handball, instinctively we all went up calling for the penalty, unfortunitly the (our)ref's view was obstructed and he was unable to give it, we didnt mind much and play carried on as they moved downfield away from the box, after a few seconds the ball was picked up and given to us to take the penalty.
We ended up losing 9-1 , but the game was played in a great spirit.
Well done Stags for a good win and awesome sportsmanship!

of course this thread would never have been started unless it was about karori, but despite that, it's a good thread!

A few weeks back we were 1-0 up at Stop Out and feeling the pressure, and one of our cb's deflected a ball into corner kick, but Pedro gave a goal kick. He walked up to him and told him that it was a corner, and Pedro reluctantly awarded it :D

Hardly fair play award, but still wanted to mention it.

I remember about 5 years ago, our team was playing University at University, top of the table clash halfway through the season.  Just before halftime our striker took a crack from outside the box that bent a wee bit and from our perspective snuck inside the upright.  In classic University styles though, no nets were provided so nobody could be sure as the auld onion bag never billowed to confirm the effort.  University protested that they thought it went wide, and we responded that if they had bothered to put up nets, we would know so 1-0 it was.  To their credit, no complaints and we cracked on.  :-)

That's not sportsmanship, that's just losing an argument!

When I used to play, the first time an opposition player was going to get booked I used to tell the ref not too - saying the challenge wasn't that bad and that it didn't deserve a booking.  This used to make me look like a nice guy to the ref and the opposition player, and that allowed me to get away with a terrible foul myself by claiming it was an accident (this only worked if the foul I committed was within about 10 minutes of the time I told the ref not to book an opposition player, so it was fresh in the ref's mind).

Is this good sportsmanship?

That happens quite a lot.. or used to.
My uncle used to play rugby for wellington and played against auckland one day and the auckland player hit him in the line out and knocked him down and the ref was going to send the auckland player off. my uncle said it wasnt him and the player stayed on and then asked my uncle why did he do that... his reply was " how am i going to get you back if your not on the field"
for the rest of the game the auckland player didnt play very well as he was always looking over his shoulder for my uncle .....

but my good deed was last week agains wests.
Guy kicked me way after the ball had left my feet and completely cleaned me out but i was so shocked that he was that late that i thought there must have been something wrong with him...
and being the good guy i am.. i decided that i would play nice and would not get him back later in the game....

will wait for the return leg later in the season.. :-)

Pedro did look very very pissed about it, then blabbered something no one understood and we all got on with it :D

Feverish,
shame for l/hutt that your capital 3 side were not as honest about a goal being scored. Although with a proper referee I will admit it is not the players call to make.(and I would have done the exact same thing as the karori player)
