Rugby World Cup pitch made from carpark

A "scungy" concreted Wellington carpark is to undergo a $1.5 million transformation into a world class artificial rugby pitch in time for the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

The carpark, behind the old show buildings in the suburb of Newtown, would become an all-weather pitch, Wellington City Council's sports portfolio leader John Morrison told The Dominion Post.

"At the moment it is a scungy old wasteland full of weeds and blocks of concrete," he said.

The new turf pitch would include floodlights, a perimeter mesh fence and changing rooms.

A resource consent application was expected to be lodged in the next few weeks and it was hoped work would begin before the end of the year.

It would be built to International Rugby Board standards as part of the council's successful bid to host pool games and two quarter finals at the World Cup.

Teams playing cup matches in Wellington including the All Blacks, South Africa, Australia and France could train at the ground, World Cup tournament services general manager Nigel Cass said.

f**k you John and Wellington City Council.

yep, this is one ocasion when we can't be kind and we shouldn't be vague

Morrison really doesn't impress me, nor does this decision -

once again the city council's love of the mighty dollar and Morrison's desire to believe NZ is still in the 1970's (i.e. monocultural rugby-head land) sees football miss out

edit  - then again , having actually, now , read the article in a hard copy Dom

it turns out football will get access - so perhaps some good will come out of the decision

Come on people read the article, football will have access as they do at Nairnville. I happen to know WRFU and Cap Football are working closely on the artificial question.

Rugby is easy to have a go at but sometimes people should understand all the facts before commenting

this is complete blsh*t. Rugby clicks its fingers and gets a ground - and the WCC try to claim they are doing it for footy. bollox. It's got to be either footy or rugby for weekend games - and it sounds like its rugby, making it a rugby ground. Another potential artificial spot gone for footy - and NOTHING on the horizon.

Rugby can be played on shty muddy grounds. Football cant.

I drove past lots of empty grounds today that were well good enough for rugby to be played on them, if not football.

Bullsh*t Feverish, learn what you are talking about before you talk about it. Rugby has exactly the sam difficulties as football does with councils and them being overprecious about grounds.

Fact: WRFU and Captial Football are working together on the Artifical strategy to lobby the WCC. The new artificial at Newtown will be a marquee projec for RWC yes, but it will be used as Nairnvill e has been by both codes. WCC have already asked for expressions of interest from parties who want to use the turf, if Cap Football have not gone to clubs with this then you need to get onto them. If junors or teams can train on an artificial during the week it takes pressure off grounds for them to be used on weekends

I dont remember seeing you at any of the WCC parks meeting or the ten plan forums. I dont remember you talking with me, Cuddly Ken and counsellor Morrison about turfs. Correct me if Im wrong. I dont think youve been involved with any of the football turf lobbying. And I suggest you know f all about Nairnville .

wot a load of shyte bopman! do u think for 1 minute football will gain out of this!!! NO WAY. the only reason wcc have fast tracked this, is no doubt due to a big financial contribution from rugby.what big brother wants he gets. only a stones throw away from rugby league!!!! park ,home of wgtn rugby, i can just see the driveway being built to connect both now, so the hurricanes , lions and all blacks can access with ease when RLP is to wet.
you should look back in history when WCC promised WRL use of RLP as compromise for giving it up as their headquarters, only to be shafted just like WGTN UTD with TW & PHOENIX at newtown park.
sure we initially might have involvement, maybe on a junior scale. however unless our poor NZFA contribute equally, big brother will be looking for a return for his investment.
gulible suckers like yourself are born everyday, wake up & smell big bro's power, cos u is underestimating it.
just in case you need more history, what happened to football at the basin!!!!!!!

just realised how young you are bopman, you're allowed to be gullible.
seeing as you're a student try history, then you 'll learn that it always repeats itself.

while you're at it don't forget to allow time to change the field markings, or else, we'll be jumping for throw in's  and going back to where it was kicked from instead of having goal-kicks.

God forbid someone is young and informed. With age they say comes wisdom - I would say from you pizda with age comes bitterness, cynicism and a need to critically attack people as opposed to their argument (yes I realise I at attacking you, not your argument, but it seems relevant).

I'd imagine the new pitch will have markings for both rugby and football, just in different colours.

In the US of A football turfs get used for soccerball during the football off season.  Alternative colour markings show up quite well on plastic pitches.

Speaking of which, it's quite funny when walking around Central Park in NY to see dual gridiron/football fields. Rather than having movable posts, they just chucked gridiron goals on top of football goals (giving them a Gaelic football appeareance). Don't know if they had the markings for both sports on the pitch (didn't actually walk onto the pitches), but I imagine they probably did.

I hope this doesn't give any ideas to WCC.

I doubt the oval balls will play on the pitch, just use it for training. As they are pro teams they usually train during daylight hours during the week so there will be plently of opportunity for for football to have use of the pitch. The more of these that get laid the more benefits the councils will see in them and therefore they can justify laying more. Its all good for our code in the long run.

Agree with Nights re the more of these the better, let's face it rugby is going to dominate during the build up to WC 2011, let's take what we can get. After the WC the interest will be lower and footy will have access to these grounds. The fact that the council is willing to spend a bit of dosh on sport is surely good in the long run.
